GCCISD Student Portal Guide: Navigating Online Learning and Resources

The GCCISD (Goose Creek Consolidated Independent School District) student portal serves as a central hub for students and parents to access vital information, resources, and tools, especially crucial during periods of remote learning or when needing to stay connected with school activities. This guide aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the GCCISD student portal, covering aspects from online learning expectations to technology resources and communication channels.

Online Learning Expectations and Grading

Even when school campuses are closed, online learning remains a mandatory component of the GCCISD educational program. All students are expected to participate in assigned online instruction. The district is committed to providing support to students who may face challenges in accessing online instruction through alternative means.

Grading and Progress Reports

Student performance in online learning activities will be assessed, and grades will be recorded in TEAMS (likely referring to Microsoft Teams, a common platform for online collaboration). Parents can monitor their child’s progress through the parent portal, where updated grades are accessible for students in grades 1-12. The primary objective of assigning grades is to furnish students and parents with valuable feedback on academic progress.

Resources and Support

GCCISD offers a range of resources to support families during online learning. Teachers provide daily office hours, as detailed in the online instruction letter. Instructional videos, assignments, and activities are posted weekly, allowing families to structure learning hours flexibly to suit their schedules. Resource and inclusion teachers collaborate with general education teachers to provide tailored support for students with specific needs. Students in self-contained classrooms receive online instruction from their assigned teacher, with accommodations and modifications implemented to the best of the district’s ability.

Platforms for Instruction

Teachers utilize specific platforms to deliver online instruction: SeeSaw for students in Pre-Kindergarten through 2nd grade, and Google Classroom for students in grades 3-12.

Technology Access and Support

GCCISD recognizes the importance of technology access for effective online learning. Teachers are proactively reaching out to families to verify internet access and hardware availability. Families lacking the necessary technology are encouraged to contact their child’s teacher for assistance. The district is exploring options for checking out technology based on student need. Although campuses are closed for safety reasons, hotspots are accessible outside of the campuses to provide internet access to students.

Summer School and Registration

Information regarding summer school availability and registration for the upcoming school year will be communicated separately.

Accessing District Technology Resources

Technology plays a pivotal role in every aspect of GCCISD operations. New employees are provided with comprehensive guidance on accessing district technology resources through the New Employee Orientation Smore.

Presentations

The Presentations screen allows users to manage and display presentations on connected displays. Users can create new presentations from scratch ("add blank") or customize existing templates ("shared templates"). It is recommended to select "add blank" when creating a new presentation not based on a shared template.

Displays

The Displays screen provides a quick overview of the connected displays and their status. A red "X" next to a display indicates a potential issue, suggesting that the TV may not be displaying the appropriate presentation. In such cases, it's advisable to contact someone near the device to check before rushing to the location. The Display ID, necessary for initial setup or troubleshooting, can also be found in this section.

Schedules

Schedules dictate which presentation is displayed on a specific display at a particular time. This feature allows for displaying different presentations at different times of the day or on different days of the week. Schedules can be used for temporary purposes, such as displaying information about an event, or for year-round utilization of the display. The "Distribution" setting determines which display will receive the schedule.

NetStart: Custom Backgrounds and Image Management

NetStart is required for uploading custom-made backgrounds or images for use in presentations. Users need a login and appropriate rights to access NetStart. Once an image is uploaded, its URL can be copied for use in presentations.

Adding Content

Before adding new content to a presentation, a placeholder must be created. Once a placeholder is created, users can add images or text.

Adding Images

To add an image, select "By URL" at the bottom of the pop-up window and paste the image URL obtained from NetStart.

Widget Settings

Different widgets offer different settings to customize the displayed content. To format the date and time differently, create separate placeholders for the time and date widgets, selecting only time (or date) in one placeholder and the remaining component (date or time) in the other.

Image Slideshows

To create an image slideshow, multiple photos must be added to a placeholder. Select "image" within the placeholder, and when the pop-up window appears, enter the URL for each photo obtained from NetStart.
