NC State University

NC State is recognized for its design-focused programs. The university emphasizes the importance of context in shaping design. Sophomore architecture students recently visited three Raleigh homes that each approach the relationship between house and garden in distinct ways: embedded within, adjacent to, or elevated above. Through site visits, original drawings and conversations with homeowners (including architect and professor Frank Harmon), students explored how architectural ideas come to life by balancing light, landscape and lived experience. Each space revealed how modern architecture responds to climate, orientation, and context, as well as how the line between indoors and out can be reimagined.

Each student was assigned one house to document, with the larger goal of understanding how architecture and site work together to create an experience. NC State’s Global Courtyard has been recognized with the Sir Walter Raleigh Award for Community Appearance - a testament to the power of design, collaboration and alumni leadership. His story is a reminder that design doesn’t just live in studios, but is also about curiosity, collaboration and building something meaningful. North Carolina A&T State University

The fashion merchandising and design experience at N.C. Hands-on learning is stressed throughout in design labs, internships, field trips, community service and participation in Fashion X-Cetera, a student organization. Because of its dual focus on both merchandising and design, the curriculum provides a broad perspective on both the business and creative aspects of the clothing and textiles industries, thus preparing students for a wide array of professional opportunities. Students are required to complete one internship experience after their junior year.
