Notable Alumni of Pi Kappa Phi: Leaders and Innovators
Pi Kappa Phi (ΠΚΦ), an American Greek Letter fraternity, has a rich history of fostering leadership and brotherhood. Founded in 1904 at the College of Charleston, it has grown into a national organization with a diverse membership. This article explores some of the fraternity's most accomplished alumni, highlighting their contributions to various fields.
The Foundation of Pi Kappa Phi
Pi Kappa Phi was established on December 10, 1904, by Andrew Alexander Kroeg Jr., Lawrence Harry Mixson, and Simon Fogarty Jr. at the College of Charleston in South Carolina. The fraternity emerged from the Chrestomathic Literary Society, where Kroeg, Mixson, and Fogarty sought to create an alternative to the existing fraternity system. The initial group, known as Nu Phi ("non-fraternity"), aimed to gain officer positions within the society. Following an election loss, seven loyal members, including Kroeg, Fogarty, Mixson, Anthony Pelzer Wagener, Thomas F. Mosimann, Theodore ("Teddy") Barnwell Kelley, and James Fogarty, met to form a new fraternity. Wagener suggested the name Pi Kappa Phi, and the fraternity pin, a black enamel diamond with Greek letters, was designed. Kroeg became the first "Archon," or president, of the chapter.
Pi Kappa Phi's Expansion and Growth
The fraternity expanded beyond the College of Charleston, establishing a second chapter at Presbyterian College on March 9, 1907. Despite state laws restricting fraternities at state-supported schools, interest in Pi Kappa Phi grew, leading to the formation of the Delta chapter at Furman University in 1909. The Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity Journal was launched that same year. As of current writing, Pi Kappa Phi has granted 231 charters, with an average chapter size of 55.
