Dickinson Sr., a co-founder of the medical technology company Becton Dickinson and an early benefactor of the college. In 1948, the college expanded its curriculum to offer four-year programs and became Fairleigh Dickinson College. Since 1996, the sports direction of Fairleigh Dickinson University has been represented by the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights. Seventeen university teams are called the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights. Sixteen of them are part of the Northeast Conference, and one (fencing) is part of the National Intercollegiate Women’s Fencing Association. Notably, only the metropolitan campus is listed in Division I. The Florham campus participates in Division III and has a completely different nickname - Devils. The mascot of the Knights is an original character named Nitro, also known as Knightro. However, it is not reflected on the sports logo. The brand name depicts a knight, but not a medieval one, rather a chess piece.

1995 - 2004: The Chess Knight Era
The emblem, created for the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights teams in the middle of the 1990s, featured a black image of a chess knight figure, accompanied by a bright blue arched wordmark, set at the bottom of the composition and executed in a classy traditional serif typeface with thick bars of the characters, outlined in white and black. The figure is turned left and colored blue with white outlines. Its bottom part is covered by the word “Knights,” curved in the shape of a rainbow. The first and last letters are uppercase, while all others are lowercase. This version of the emblem was used from 1996-2003.

2004 - 2019: Burgundy and Navy
The redesign of 2004 changed the color palette of the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights to navy and burgundy and added an additional arched lettering to the composition. It was uppercase “Fairleigh Dickinson”, written in a narrowed serif font, in solid burgundy, above the image of a navy-blue knight chess figure.
2019 - 2023: Minimalist Sans-Serif
A completely different logo was introduced by the athletic program in 2019 and stayed with the Knights for the next four years. It was a super minimalistic badge with just the solid navy lettering written against a plain white background. All uppercase characters of a sleek modern sans-serif inscription featured a thin burgundy outline, supporting the color palette of the previous Knights’ logo version.
2023 - Present: The Sword and Shield
The redesign of 2023 has created somewhat even more confident and modern for the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights. It is a geometric sans-serif FDY abbreviation in a custom formed with interesting cut-outs in the shape of a sword’s blades in all the characters, and a real sword drawing coming vertically through the negative space of the “D”. The handle of the weapon is executed in burgundy and white, keeping the classy color palette of the program unchanged.
The University Logo: A Symbol of Tradition
The University logo is a combination of the words Fairleigh Dickinson University in the traditional serif typeface Adobe® Caslon Pro, along with the University shield, reflecting the University’s historic roots. The roses designate the Florham Campus in Madison, N.J., because Madison is often called the Rose City. The battlemented band across the shield represents the Castle on the former Rutherford Campus, the site of the University’s founding. Illustration B shows the use of the logo with a secondary brand. The University seal is the more formal representation of the University identity and is reserved primarily for presidential documents, legal papers, University citations and diplomas.
