Navigating GPA Requirements and Academic Opportunities at Emerson College
Emerson College, an independent, nondenominational institution focused on communication and the arts within a liberal arts context, attracts students with diverse academic backgrounds and aspirations. Understanding the college's GPA requirements, academic progress standards, and financial aid opportunities is crucial for prospective and current students. This article provides a comprehensive overview of these aspects to help students navigate their academic journey at Emerson.
Understanding GPA Expectations for Admission
Emerson College's acceptance rate is 47.5%, indicating that it is moderately selective. While Emerson College does not have an explicit minimum GPA requirement for admission, the average high school GPA of admitted students is around 3.7 on a 4.0 scale. This suggests that successful applicants generally have a mix of A's and B's, with a leaning toward A's, placing them above average in their high school class.
Holistic Admission Approach
Emerson College employs a holistic approach to admissions, evaluating the entire application rather than solely relying on GPA. The college considers factors such as course rigor, extracurricular involvement, and personal talents. Therefore, even if an applicant's GPA is slightly below the average, they still have a chance of admission if they can demonstrate other strengths in their application. Highlighting a passion for, relevant experiences within, and commitment to the chosen field can significantly enhance the application.
Standardized Testing
Emerson hasn't explicitly named a policy on SAT/ACT requirements, but because it's published average SAT or ACT scores, it's likely test flexible. Typically, these schools say, "if you feel your SAT or ACT score represents you well as a student, submit them. Despite this policy, the truth is that most students still take the SAT or ACT, and most applicants to Emerson will submit their scores. If you don't submit scores, you'll have one fewer dimension to show that you're worthy of being admitted, compared to other students. The 25th percentile SAT score is 1250, and the 75th percentile SAT score is 1430. Therefore, if your SAT superscore is currently below a 1360, we strongly recommend that you consider prepping for the SAT and retaking it. The average ACT score at Emerson is 29. The 25th percentile ACT score is 27, and the 75th percentile ACT score is 31. To try to aim for the school's ACT requirement of 29 and above, you should try to take the ACT as many times as you can.
Maintaining Satisfactory Academic Progress
Once enrolled, undergraduate students must maintain satisfactory academic progress (SAP) to remain in good standing. Emerson College has set specific standards for SAP:

- Students are expected to maintain a cumulative and semester grade point average of 1.7 for students with first-year standing (up to 34.99 credits).
- A 2.0 GPA for all other students is required.
- Students must successfully complete 75 percent of attempted credits per semester; grades of F, W, and I are not considered as successfully completing a course.
Students who fail to meet these standards are placed on Academic Notice. Those who do not earn Satisfactory Academic Progress for two consecutive semesters are subject to Academic Suspension.
Academic Standing and Consequences
Students not in satisfactory academic standing at the College are ineligible to compete in varsity athletics or run for Student Government Association office. They may be prohibited from participating in extra- and co-curricular activities (e.g., WERS, EIV, theater productions, and forensics) by the chair of the academic department in which they are majoring, and from serving in student affairs leadership positions (e.g., resident assistants and orientation leaders) by the associate dean of campus life.
Appeals and Readmittance
Students who have been academically suspended may appeal to the Academic Appeals Committee for continued study. If an appeal is denied or not pursued, the student will be administratively withdrawn. After at least one semester of suspension, the student may apply for readmittance by submitting a petition to the Academic Appeals Committee demonstrating readiness for continued studies.
Academic Dismissal
Academic Dismissal is a permanent separation from the College with no option to appeal. A third consecutive semester of not earning satisfactory academic progress will also result in automatic Academic Dismissal.
