Previous Experience Abroad
For most grants, applicants who have had extensive previous experience abroad are at a competitive disadvantage but are not necessarily disqualified for that reason. Depending on the U.S. Embassy in the host country, some countries will not consider applicants who are currently residing in or will be residing in that country during the year preceding the grant. Fulbright Student Program

Campus Deadline
Applicants applying through an institution will prepare a completed application by their campus deadlines, prior to the national deadline. The Fulbright Program Adviser (FPA) will set a campus application deadline for the institution’s students, which is typically 4-6 weeks earlier than the final October deadline. The institution must complete the Fulbright application through the Fulbright online application system by the campus deadline; all supporting materials as outlined in the Application Components section, must also be included by the campus deadline date. Following the interview and before the national deadline in October, you may have the opportunity to revise your application based on feedback provided by the Fulbright Program Adviser and the campus review committee. Your FPA will unlock your application after the campus review is complete.
National Deadline
At-Large candidates must submit their applications through the Fulbright online application system by the national deadline. Candidates are responsible for ensuring that all supporting documents are attached to the online application, as outlined in the Application Components. Application submissions are final. Applications cannot be unsubmitted for any reason.

The abstract and short answers are part of the Fulbright application package and are chronologically the first thing reviewers see, so they should be approached thoughtfully in conjunction with the Statement of Grant Purpose.
- Abstract/Summary of Proposal: Briefly explain why you wish to be a Fulbright grantee and undertake an English Teaching Assistant opportunity (1,750 character limit).
- Flexibility & Adaptability: Explain how you will adapt to working and living in a new environment in the host country. Consider the ways in which you have grown throughout your life that make you the individual you are today. How have you demonstrated these qualities in your academic, professional, or personal life? (2,000 character limit).
- Community Engagement: How will you integrate within and engage with your host community? community (through extracurricular activities, hobbies, or volunteering), and how you can engage with these ideas and practices while on grant. In what unique ways do you plan to share your culture and values in your host community and learn from others? How do your lived experiences prepare you to represent the United States as a cultural ambassador? (2,000 character limit).
- Future Goals: Describe your career and/or educational plans after completing a Fulbright grant. How will your Fulbright experience help you reach these future goals?
Review Process
In October, all applications are screened in a technical review process for eligibility and completeness by IIE staff before being moved forward to the National Screening Committee. From November to December, applications are reviewed by National Screening Committee panels, which include faculty and staff from U.S. institutions who have discipline or region-specific experience. By the end of January, all applicants will receive initial notification of recommended or non-recommended status. Applications are then forwarded to the U.S. Department of State and the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board for review. The host country review process may include applicant interviews, requests for additional application materials, or other action items depending on the country’s requirements and review process.
Selection and Notification
Selection decisions and timing can be influenced by a number of factors, including available funding, the number of applications received, country priorities, and any host institution administrative procedures (if applicable). All three entities must review selection decisions before candidates can be notified. Final selections are traditionally released on a rolling basis in the spring. IIE cannot predict when a specific award decision will be released.

Departure Dates
Departure dates usually correspond to the academic calendar of the host country. Approximate dates of the academic years in the various countries can be found in the Award Descriptions for each country.
Grant Period
Grant dates are outlined in the country’s award description and traditionally must correspond to the academic calendar of the host country. Exceptions to stated start dates may be requested for grants with full-time research projects. For the academic year, grants must begin no later than June 1, 2027. Research applicants are expected to provide a feasible timeline for their project in the Statement of Grant Purpose. All grant timelines and start dates must be approved by Fulbright Commissions or Posts.
