History and Development

The history of EdUHK can be traced back to 1853 when St. Paul's College introduced the first formalised program of in-service teacher training. This pioneering effort marked the beginning of teacher education in Hong Kong. In 1994, the Hong Kong Institute of Education was formally established, solidifying the commitment to teacher training. The institution's primary focus was the training of teachers for the region. In October 1997, the Institute moved to its new campus in Tai Po near the Tai Po Industrial Estate. In 2001, the HKIEd HSBC Early Childhood Learning Centre was established on the campus. HKIEd launched its first batch of non-education programmes, namely the Bachelor of Arts in Language Studies and Bachelor of Social Sciences in Global and Environmental Studies in September 2010. On 11 September 2015 the University Grants Committee accepted the application by the Institute of Education to change its name to university, and on 26 January 2016 the adoption of the title "The Education University of Hong Kong" was approved. Over the years, the institution has evolved and expanded its scope, eventually being granted university status and officially becoming The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK).

Course Information

Most courses are taught in English, but Cantonese is the primary language of Hong Kong. You will encounter Cantonese in dormitories, on the street, and in tutorials, labs, and studios. Students can take a full-time course of study: Four to six courses with a total of 20-30 quarter/13.3-20 semester UC units. Most business, economics, engineering, and science courses have prerequisites and require prior experience in the field. If you are advanced in one of these majors, you are more likely to qualify for the courses. Common Core (CC) courses have a 9000 number and are broad interdisciplinary courses that are usually lower division. Course availability is limited in many departments. EdUHK attaches great importance to the learning experience of students. Student halls are a vital element of student life at EdUHK. They are encouraged to take part in different types of service learning, language immersion and overseas exchange programmes to broaden exposure.

Exchange Programs

Students are fully integrated into the University of Hong Kong. All courses offered at HKU are taught in English except language courses. Students are required to take at least three courses from the specific school they are admitted to at HKU. An average semester course load is five courses. Course offerings include: American Studies, Architecture, Astronomy, Biology, Biochemistry, Buddhist Studies, Business, Chemistry, Chinese, English, East Asian Languages & Cultures, Economics, Education, Engineering (Civil, Computer Science, Electrical & Mechanical), English, Environmental Studies, European Studies, Film and Media Studies, French, Geography, Geology, German, History, History of Art, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Linguistics, Music, Philosophy, Mathematics, Physics, Health, Sports & Exercise Science, Portuguese, Political Science, Public Administration, Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Spanish, Speech-Language Hearing. Beginning to advanced Putonghua (Mandarin) and Cantonese courses are offered in the fall or spring semester for exchange students. Students can take one Mandarin or Cantonese course along with their major courses or study Mandarin or Cantonese in an intensive full-time language program during the semester or year. The intensive language program offers fifteen hours of instruction per week by experienced instructors who are native speakers of Chinese and provide balanced training in listening, speaking, reading and writing in Chinese.

Accommodation

Program dates for the Fall semester are generally late August to late December and early January to late May for the Spring semester. HKU has thirteen residence halls and four residential colleges. Eight of the residence halls are within walking distance of the main campus and four halls are a bus ride from the main campus. Students stay in air conditioned double-occupancy rooms with HKU students. All halls have common rooms and recreational facilities as well as quiet places for study. Bathroom facilities are communal. Some of the residence halls have dining hall facilities, but most students eat at campus cafeterias and restaurants near the residence halls. The HKU residence halls are known for their strong hall spirit and each hall has its own traditions and culture.The newly built Residential Colleges on Lung Wah Street are near the Kennedy Town Shopping area and a short bus ride from the main campus. The residential colleges offer single and double rooms and each floor has a communal kitchen and bathroom. Placement in HKU Accommodations is competitive and limited.

Admissions and Scholarships

EdUHK welcomes applications from all over the world. Applications for the 2025/26 entry for non-local applicants are now open. Open to KU students with sophomore standing by the beginning of the program that have a minimum of 3.0 cumulative GPA. The University has established scholarships to encourage and recognise the pursuit of academic excellence of our non-local students. The scholarships are set up with donations and funding from the University, and are granted on the basis of academic merit, personal qualities, extra-curricular activities and community service, among other factors. Other scholarships: e.g. International students can apply for the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme, which is run by Hong Kong’s Research Grants Council. Academic Culture

UCEAP alumni have noted that everything from course registration to final exams is different at the University of Hong Kong. Throughout the program you’ll be learning alongside local students. Students who succeed are also able to study independently, do the background reading, and incorporate class work in written papers. Local teaching style emphasizes memorization, so be prepared to repeat lecture material on written quizzes and exams. Some courses involve fieldwork, practical experience, or lab work. Tip: Lecturers may have heavy accents. You will earn direct UC credit and grades for all coursework. Grading at Hong Kong institutions reflects rigorous academic standards. Grading curves are rare. Instructors asses academic progress based on fieldwork, lab assignments, individual and group projects, quizzes, exams, and any other criteria relevant to the course. They may also consider class attendance and participation. Class participation may be especially important in seminars and in courses that have tutorial sessions. Most exams are in short answer or essay format. Language course grades are usually based on periodic quizzes and tests, homework assignments, class performance, and a final oral and written exam. These courses are small and require attendance in every class unless you receive permission to be absent. Spring grades are usually available in August.
