Navigating Scholarships at Cal State East Bay: A Comprehensive Guide

Securing funding for higher education is a critical step for many students. California State University, East Bay (CSUEB) offers a range of scholarship and grant opportunities to help students achieve their academic goals. This article provides a detailed overview of the scholarships available at CSUEB, eligibility requirements, and the application process.

Understanding Financial Aid at Cal State East Bay

Nearly 70 percent of Cal State East Bay students receive some form of financial aid. A typical financial aid package consists of a student grant, a student loan, work-study and/or income from a part-time job or internship, as well as an expected family contribution. The type of support you choose can be designed to fit your intentions, financial resources and funding timetable.

Types of Financial Aid Available

CSUEB offers a variety of financial aid options, including scholarships and grants, to assist students in funding their education. Grants are gift assistance to students to pay educational expenses, with no obligation for monetary repayment. Some grants are based on financial need, others are based on academic achievement or merit, and some require a combination of criteria.

Federal Pell Grant

The Federal Pell Grant provides funds to eligible undergraduate and Teacher Credential students pursuing a first bachelor's degree or teaching credential. Pell Grants are awarded to eligible students without regard to priority filing date. The Pell Grant amount is based on your Student Aid Index (SAI) and enrollment intensity for the academic school year. Regulations effective July 1, 2012, limit the receipt of a Pell Grant to a lifetime limit of up to 6 full-time years (600%). This includes community colleges, vocational schools, and four-year public and private universities.

Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grants (SEOG)

Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grants (SEOG) are awarded to eligible undergraduate Pell Grant recipients with exceptional need. Eligible recipients may receive between $100 and $1,200 per school year.

Eligible full-time undergraduates admitted through the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) may receive EOP Grant funds. Students pursuing a second bachelor's, second credential, or second master's degree are not eligible for the SUG. CSU policy limits the length of time for receipt of the SUG. Graduate students cannot exceed more than 125% earned units of the required program length.

Cal Grants (A & B)

At the California State University, the Cal Grant A assists with tuition fees. This grant is for undergraduate students who are California residents. If the student's tuition fees are paid by another state resources (e.g. fee waivers, Vocational Rehabilitation, etc) they will not be eligible to receive fee payment from a Cal Grant. Cal Grant B provides a living allowance and tuition fee assistance. Awards for most first-year students are limited to an allowance of up to $1,672 for books and living expenses. When renewed or awarded beyond the freshman year, the award also helps pay for tuition fees. The awards for tuition fees are the same as those for Cal Grant A. Please make sure your first and last name on your California Dream Act Application (CADAA) matches the name on your Admissions application. If your names do not match, your award may be delayed.

Middle Class Scholarship (MCS)

Students who did not submit their applications by April 2, 2025, will not be considered by CSAC for the MCS program. CSUEB anticipates that the MCS funding for the Fall 2025 semester will be posted after the census date. CSAC continues to notify students of their preliminary eligibility on a rolling basis. MCS awards for the Spring term are set to disburse shortly after the February 16, 2026, semester census date.

Application Essay: "My Story"

Many scholarships require an essay titled “My Story” that tells the selection committee about you. Be specific about your academic and career goals, and how you plan to reach those goals. Discuss any obstacles you have overcome and any specific financial needs you have.

Tips for Writing a Compelling Essay

  • Introduction: Briefly, who are you? What’s your major? Career goals. What do you plan to do when you leave CSU East Bay? Financial need. How will you use the scholarship if you receive it?
  • Mention your major, or program you are pursuing. Also, if you feel you haven’t settled on a direction or major, discuss the options you are considering and what you’re doing to settle on an option. The point is to show that you are mature and are thinking of your own future.
  • Discuss any obstacles you have overcome and any specific financial needs you have. Obstacles can be anything from your financial situation, to being the first in your family to go to college, to not having your own mode of transportation.
    • Example Obstacles: Not having a car: I take the bus to school even though it takes me two hours to get to school every day. Being a parent and going to school full time: I am a single parent with two kids. Family pressures: My parents prefer that I don’t go to school and that I work full time to help with the family finances. Financial situation: Although my parents help me with college expenses, money is tight since the economy has been down.
  • Read the prompt several times and think about what it is really asking.
  • SHOW, don’t tell. Avoid words and phrases without explanation.
  • Don’t read it for at least 24 hours!
  • Your statement should reflect your individual experiences, interests, and goals related to your degree work. Please carefully proofread and edit your statement for both clarity and organization, so that we have the best opportunity to evaluate your application. Introduce yourself to us. Tell us what excites you about the study of the past. You can describe an inspiring individual, experience, class, or reading that motivates your work. Describe ways you try to apply or practice your history education in community activities, whether those are connected to Cal State East Bay, or elsewhere. Tell us about your educational and professional goals. How might your history education inform your professional or post-graduation goals?

Important Considerations

Federal Compliance

Federal Regulations do not allow California State University, East Bay to provide East Bay students with funding in excess of their Cost of Attendance or 'Need' as calculated by the FAFSA/ CADAA Application. Clause (1)(iii) of 34 CFR 685.102(b), (Code of Federal Regulations) specifically, states (1) The estimated amount of assistance for a period of enrollment that a student (or a parent on behalf of a student) will receive from Federal, State, institutional, or other sources, such as scholarships, grants, net earnings from need-based employment, or loans, including but not limited to- … To ensure federal compliance and that the least amount of students is negatively impacted by possible adjustments resulting from late fund reporting, All SFR forms must be submitted by the established deadline.

Impact of Other Aid on MCS Awards

Example: Student received an MCS award for the Fall 2025 semester. Thereafter, the student is awarded a departmental/external scholarship later in the term. CSUEB is required to report the aid changes to CSAC and the MCS will be recalculated (reduced). This MCS reduction may result in a balance. Reductions are subject to occur throughout and after the end of an academic year, depending on the timing of when a grant/scholarship/tuition waiver is posted. You may receive a refund and then owe a balance after the MCS adjustment is processed by CSAC.

Verification of Information

The MCS is based on your FAFSA/CADAA and your initial submission of GPA information. This is pending verification of the information that you submitted on your Financial Aid and Admissions application. Note that MCS award amounts are subject to change depending on the accuracy of the information submitted, units of enrollment, cost of attendance, other available gift aid, self-help student contribution amount determined by the State, and if applicable, parent contribution for dependent students with a household income of over $100,000. MCS funds will not be made official until all data has been verified and we are able to guarantee your eligibility with the state. This process includes providing an enrollment file to CSAC.
