Creighton Bluejays Volleyball: A History of NCAA Tournament Success
Creighton University, a Jesuit/Catholic University in Omaha, Nebraska, boasts a rich athletic tradition embodied by its teams, the Creighton Bluejays, or Jays. As a member of the Big East Conference, Creighton competes in NCAA Division I, fielding 14 varsity teams. While the university has achieved notable success in various sports, including baseball and men's basketball, this article focuses on the Creighton Bluejays volleyball program and its history within the NCAA Tournament.
Creighton Athletics Overview
Before delving into the volleyball program's NCAA Tournament history, it's important to provide a brief overview of Creighton's athletic landscape. The athletic director is Marcus Blossom. The university's basketball arena is CHI Health Center Omaha (men's) and D. J. Sokol Arena (women's). Creighton's baseball team, coached by Ed Servais, plays its home games at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha, which also hosts the College World Series.
Creighton's men's basketball program has been a member of the Big East Conference since the 2013-14 season. Prior to that, the Jays were members of the Missouri Valley Conference from 1978-2013. Creighton's current head coach is Greg McDermott. The men's team plays all of their home games at CHI Health Center Omaha (capacity 18,320). Famous individuals associated with Creighton basketball include former players Bob Gibson, Paul Silas, Doug McDermott, Bob Portman, Gene Harmon, Benoit Benjamin, Bob Harstad, Chad Gallagher, Rodney Buford, Kyle Korver, Gary Swain, Ryan Sears, Nate Funk, and Anthony Tolliver. The all-time leading scorer in Creighton men's basketball history is Doug McDermott, who ended his college career in 2014 with 3,150 total points. The women's basketball team is coached by Jim Flanery, and were the 2004 WNIT Champions. They play their home games on campus at D. J. Sokol Arena. Creighton's current men's soccer coach is Elmar Bolowich. The women's soccer team has won four Missouri Valley Conference Tournament championships, earning the league's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament in each of those years.
A Defining Moment: Baseball's 1991 College World Series Appearance
While not directly related to volleyball, Creighton's baseball team's 1991 College World Series (CWS) appearance demonstrates the university's capacity for athletic success on a national stage. Coached by Jim Hendry, who later became the General Manager of the Chicago Cubs, the Jays advanced to the CWS by defeating the Hawaii Rainbows in the NCAA West I Regional. The seventh-seeded Bluejays (49-20) faced the second-seeded Clemson Tigers in front of a record crowd at Rosenblatt Stadium. Although they lost to Wichita State in a memorable 12-inning game, the Jays bounced back to defeat Long Beach State, setting up a rematch with Wichita State in the National Semifinals. This appearance underscores Creighton's ability to compete with top-tier programs.
Volleyball Program's NCAA Tournament Journey
The Creighton Bluejays volleyball team has steadily grown into a force to be reckoned with in the NCAA Tournament. The women's soccer team has won four Missouri Valley Conference Tournament championships, earning the league's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament in each of those years. The number 2 seed Creighton toppled number 3 seed Texas three sets to one in the NCAA Volleyball Tournament. With the win, the team tied the longest tournament run in Bluejay volleyball history. The last and only time Creighton advanced to the Elite Eight was in 2016. It lost to Texas that time. But this year, the Jesuit school from Omaha evened the score, improving to 1-1 all-time against UT. Texas was defending back-to-back national titles this season. Outside hitter Norah Sis said the team has consistently worked hard to get to this point. "I feel like we're still going into every single game with the same mentality," Sis said. "The consistency and the work ethic of this group and how we love and trust each other, I think is really, really special and hopefully it'll lead us to a national championship." Add the win to a historic resume for Creighton this year, which has won 25 straight matches after Friday’s win, reached No. 5 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll and won 32 total matches. All of which are school records. Creighton now advances to play Sunday against No. 1 seed Penn State, which defeated No.
