Creighton Bluejays is the name of an athletic program from Creighton University. The sports program of the Jesuit educational institution is composed of 14 men’s and women’s teams, which compete in the first division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Creighton Bluejays teams are members of the Big East Conference. The Creighton Bluejays athletic program consists of six men’s and eight woman’s clubs, competing in various sports disciplines, including Cross Country, Basketball, Baseball, Rowing, Soccer, and a few others.

As for the visual identity, Creighton Bluejays changes several logo design concepts throughout the years, having two major redesigns starting at the beginning of the 1990s. Although, the calm and sleek shade of blue has always been a part of the athletic program of Creighton University from Omaha.
1990 - 1998: The Caricature Bird
The Creighton Bluejays logo, designed in 1990, featured a caricature of a Bluejays bird, standing at its full length and wearing a white jersey with the heavy square “C” in blue. The bird looked funny, having a displeased grimace, it stood propping his side with its wing. Except for the letter “C”, no identification marks were standing for the name of the program or the university.
1999 - 2012: The "Jays" Script
The redesign of 1999 introduced a completely different version of the Creighton Bluejays badge, with the image of the bird replaced by the diagonally placed lettering in the same shade of blue. There were no other colors or ornaments on the badge, just the bold handwritten “Jays” in a modern cursive with thick lines of the letters and elongated curved tails.
2013 - Today: The Modern "C" with Bluejay Head
Another concept of the Creighton Bluejays’ visual identity was created in 2013. The logo we all can see today is composed of both a letter and an emblem, with the depiction of the mascot bird on it. The badge is composed of a modern and sharp capital “C” in white with a double blue outline and apart serifs coming out of the vertical bar to the left. The pointed elements are balanced by the horizontal bars of the letter; which are arched from the center. The head of the bird, drawn in the same color palette, is placed in the negative space of the “C”. It’s a confident “C.” Sharp. Forward-leaning. Backed up by a bird ready for whatever the day brings. It’s a logo and an identity Creighton grew into.
Billy Bluejay: The Mascot's Evolution
Long before Billy Bluejay, Creighton’s athletic teams were known by their colors or the unofficial nickname of the “Hilltoppers,” based on campus’ elevated position. At the behest of alumni and the athletics board, the Omaha Bee newspaper ran a contest to name the University’s official mascot. There were 200 entries, including the Creighton Golden Rods, Creighton Shamrocks, Creighton Tigers and Creighton Bears.
Billy was angry by design. He was meant to look “like he swallowed something that gave him a bellyache,” wrote Joseph P. Murphy was Creighton’s public relations director in the early ’40s when he commissioned an artist to draw Billy. Yet Murphy thought the Jayhawk looked too “complacent and satisfied.” Billy’s job, Murphy wrote, was to “promote action.
Murphy didn’t mince words when it came to Billy’s predecessors. “(Billy’s) ancestors at Creighton were insipid-looking creatures pictured perched on dead branches or in dusty trophy cases. Billy, when he arrived at Creighton, brought his family out of the pages and cages and into the hearts of Creighton fans. Compared to his predecessors, he had life and attitude.
Mascot Transformations
Billy’s been flapping his wings ’round arenas and stadiums for decades, and in that time he’s taken on half a dozen forms. Many alumni will recall a different mascot costume - perhaps one with thicker plumage or a papier-mâché head. Like any other living creature, Billy has evolved, continually shifting the shape of his beak, each new era marked by the dawn of another Jay.
At first, the “live” mascot was just a big cardboard cutout of the bird who attended various events. However, some form of costumed Billy might go back much further. By the ’70s, the tradition of a costumed mascot was firmly established at Creighton.
The same year “The Empire Strikes Back” was released, a robot that looked like R2-D2 roamed Creighton home games.
A Consistent Brand Identity
Photos suggest our brand began to coalesce into a consistent identity sometime in the ’90s.
For years, Creighton's blue jay was ornithologically correct and anonymous. The bad-tempered Battlin’ Bill Bluejay - at various later times referred to as “The Bluejay,” “Billie Bluejay,” “Billy the Bluejay” and even “William Bluejay” - became a fixture of Creighton apparel for decades.
But before the 2013 rebrand, no other image knocked the original Billy off his perch. The bird endured, sticking around perhaps as long as any design element in the University’s history. Even 50 years after his creation, Billy was showing up everywhere, including the side of Public Safety vehicles. And now, of course, this version of Billy stands six feet tall outside Morrison Stadium, his surly stance and grimace cast in bronze.
