A Look into Cowley College's History

Cowley College's journey began humbly, with facilities initially housed in the basement of Arkansas City High School. The college's growth is marked by key milestones, each contributing to its present-day form.

The Early Years: Laying the Foundation

The 1930s saw the construction of the gymnasium, known as the W.S. Scott Auditorium, a testament to the college's early commitment to athletics and student life.

The 1950s: Building a Campus

Groundbreaking for Galle-Johnson Hall, named after the late Kurt R. Galle and the late Dr. Johnson, marked a turning point. Construction commenced in 1950 in Arkansas City, on land adjacent to the high school where the Brown Center now stands.

The 1960s: Establishing Leadership

Dr. Paul Johnston was elected in 1966. Dr. Gwen Thompson became the first president on July 1, 1967. That same year, Ireland Hall (originally unnamed) was established.

The 1970s: Expanding Facilities

The 1970s witnessed further expansion with the construction of the Renn Memorial Library in 1972, fulfilling a bequest to build a library on the Cowley campus. In 1973, a bond issue facilitated the construction of the Harold B. Building and a central heating plant. New buildings, including the W.H. Hargrove Athletic Center, were completed in 1976. The Gwendel A. Hargrove Athletic Center was named after the second president of the college, Dr. Gwendel A. Thompson.

The 1980s: Continued Growth

The first dorm, now known as the D. Robert Storbeck Dorm, opened its doors during this decade. Dr. Patrick J. McAtee assumed the role of the college’s third president on July 1, 1987.

The 1990s: Modernization and Expansion

Cowley opened its first Wellness Center in 1992 at 201 W. Fifth Avenue, moving later to Central Ave. The William (Bill) R. Docking Dorm, named after the son of the late Kansas Governor Robert F. Docking, was opened in 1994. The Brown Center, encompassing the Robert Brown Theatre and Earle N. Wright Art Center, was dedicated to the community and the college. It was named after the late Robert A. Brown and Roger A. Brown.

The 2000s: New Facilities and Recognition

The fall of 2000 saw the addition of the Sid Regnier Bookstore to the Ark City campus. A year later, in 2001, the Oscar Kimmell Dorm, housing 72 students, was opened. The Patrick J. McAtee Dining Center was dedicated and opened in 2001. It was named after Dr. Patrick J. McAtee. The college inducted Tom Cleveland, a long-time coach at Cowley College, into its Hall of Fame in 2000. A $350,000 gift from the Daisy E. and Paul H. Webb Foundation made the Webb-Brown Academic Center on the Arkansas City campus a reality. In 2008, the Central Avenue Dormitory was built.

The 2010s: Further Development

The college added The Lodge, another new dorm, in 2011. Cowley has some of the best training centers in the nation.

History Department

Students who major in history at Cowley College complete a well-rounded curriculum that leads to an Associate of Arts degree. With this degree, students will complete the course requirements necessary to transfer to a 4-year college or university for a bachelor’s degree. A history major prepares students for a variety of career fields, including government, social service, historical preservation, social science, and research.

The college offers courses designed to help the student with an introduction to United States history from the end of Reconstruction to the present. This course will survey the important political, cultural, economic, and religious/philosophical accomplishments during this period. Knowledge of one’s culture is essential if one is to understand the present and intelligently plan for the future.

General Education Requirements

Students are required to complete courses from at least three different departments within the Humanities, excluding studio and performance courses. Credit Hour Definition
