GED Diploma Copy Requirements: A Comprehensive Guide
Earning a GED® diploma is a significant achievement, opening doors to higher education and career opportunities. This article provides a detailed overview of GED diploma copy requirements, focusing on how to obtain duplicates and verifications, understand transcript details, and navigate state-specific processes.
Why You Might Need a GED Diploma Copy
After all the hard work and preparation you put in, it's natural to want to show off your success to friends, colleges, and employers. GED® Badges are proof of the skills you’ve displayed in passing your GED®. Your diploma is the certificate issued by your state, signifying you have earned your high school equivalency. The transcript is the official record of all the test subjects you took. Many colleges and universities require you to submit a copy of each to be accepted and start taking classes. This includes a copy of your diploma and transcript.
Initial Steps After Receiving Your GED
Once you receive your diploma and transcript, download and save these documents immediately. Keep records regarding where and how you took your test. This information will be crucial if you ever need to request a replacement.
General Procedures for Ordering Duplicate GED Documents
Unfortunately, there is no national process when ordering a replacement GED diploma or transcript. Each state has its own procedures, which can vary widely. In some states, copies of GED diplomas and transcripts are provided by the organization where you took your GED test. To request a replacement, contact the organization you took your test with. This could be an online testing company or an adult education program. If they don’t have a copy, they should refer you to a state agency where you can retrieve the requested documents. If all else fails, or you didn’t keep information about where you took your test, contact your state Department of Education. In some states, this process is simple, often involving a small processing fee payable by certified check or money order. Finally, include a self-addressed stamped envelope large enough for your GED diploma to lay flat. Most physical diploma and/or transcript orders take approximately 1-2 days to process. Please allow at least a few months for processing and shipping. Don’t wait until the last minute before beginning this request. Call any local organization offering GED prep classes and/or testing. Personally call and ask to speak to supervisors who will be able to direct you. They’ll know how to help. When you’ve received your copies, store them in a safe location. Also, keep a record of where they came from and how you got them.

The Kansas Board of Regents provides statutory administration for high school equivalency in the State of Kansas. The Kansas Board of Regents issues the Kansas State High School Diploma through the successful completion of the 2014 series GED® exam. The 2014 GED® exam is a four-subject high school equivalency test that measures skills required by high schools and requested by colleges and employers.
The first step for anyone wishing to take the GED® test is to create an account at www.GED.com. Preparation programs offer instruction aimed at successful completion of the GED® exam. The GED ReadyTM (official GED® practice test) is a shortened version of the GED® test designed to indicate whether or not a person is ready to take and pass the official GED® tests. It is a good predictor of success.
Kansas students looking to earn their GED (Kansas State High School Diploma) can take the four separate GED subtests at one of the Kansas Testing Centers or online. GED Testing is a computer-based exam, conducted under secure conditions exclusively at authorized Pearson VUE Testing Centers (PVTC). Authorized PVTCs are approved by the National GED Testing Service and the State GED Administrator. Most Kansas GED® Testing Centers are supported primarily through fees charged for testing.
GED® test candidates with learning challenges or physical challenges may request modifications of standard testing conditions based on documented special needs. The GED® exam is available in Spanish at all authorized Pearson VUE testing centers or online by selecting the Spanish language format when scheduling each test module. GED® candidates must provide unexpired photo identification, which includes name, address, date of birth, and signature.

New York
NOTE: The New York State Education Department DOES NOT have any high school records or high school transcripts. Duplicate official high school equivalency diplomas and/or transcripts can now be purchased online. This service is for HSE record holders only. Third party requests (colleges, employers, etc.) must be made through the duplicate request form; instructions found below. All HSE record holders can create a my.ny.gov account and be matched to their HSE record. You must first create a personal my.ny.gov account. Note: The NYSED HSE office will not be able to assist with creating a my.ny.gov or with password resets. A high school equivalency record can only be matched to one my.ny.gov. Follow instructions for the candidate match. If a match cannot be made using this method, you can locate your record through a manual search service provided by the HSE Office. Once your record match is confirmed, your HSE record will be associated with your my.ny.gov account. Instructions for ordering a duplicate document will be presented once you are logged in. The online payment system offers a fast and efficient option to order duplicate diplomas and/or transcripts. Colleges, background check companies, and employers are encouraged to direct applicants to order their own documents through the online payment system described above. Do not send cash, personal checks, or international money orders. Most HSE record holders can find unofficial results on the HSE Status Report found here.
Understanding GED Transcripts
Your transcript is the official record of your GED test performance, detailing the scores you achieved in each subject. It’s essential for college applications and employment opportunities. Third-party verifications often require a fee. For example, GED Testing Service charges $20 to verify a transcript.
