Certified Professional in Learning and Performance (CPLP) Certification: A Comprehensive Guide

In today's dynamic business landscape, Human Resources plays a pivotal role, and within it, talent development is crucial. Professional self-improvement is possible through specific certification. A person working within talent development as part of the HR team may benefit from becoming a certified learning and development professional. The Certified Professional in Learning and Performance (CPLP) certification, offered by the Association for Talent Development (ATD), stands as a testament to a professional's expertise and commitment to the field. This article delves into the intricacies of the CPLP certification, exploring its significance, requirements, and benefits for both individuals and organizations.

What is CPLP?

CPLP stands for Certified Professional in Learning and Performance. It is a certification for training and development practitioners. Formerly known as the Certified Professional in Learning & Performance (CPLP), it is now a subset of the Talent Development Capability Model.

CPLP vs. CPTD and APTD

The Association for Talent Development (ATD) offers multiple certifications for talent development professionals, including the CPLP, Certified Professional in Talent Development (CPTD), and Associate Professional in Talent Development (APTD). Understanding the differences between these certifications is crucial for choosing the right one for your career goals.

  • Certified Professional in Talent Development (CPTD): The Certified Professional in Talent Development (CPTD) is a professional certification for TD professionals with at least five years of experience. It is broad and measures a professional’s knowledge and skill application across the breadth of talent development capabilities. CPTD candidates are tested on content covering 22 capabilities from the Talent Development Capability Model. A CPTD understands and can affect the value and impact employee learning and development strategies bring to the success of an organization.
  • Associate Professional in Talent Development (APTD): The Associate Professional in Talent Development (APTD) is a certification for talent development professionals who are in the early part of their careers or whose professional roles and aspirations are focused on a few areas of expertise. The competencies included in the APTD are the basics of talent development that professionals can use every day, no matter the level within an organization or company. The APTD focuses primarily on three areas of expertise (AOEs) from the ATD Capability Model: Instructional Design, Training Delivery, and Learning Technologies. Evaluating Learning Impact and the foundational competency of Global Mindset also will be included in questions from the main AOEs throughout the exam.
  • CPLP: CPTD covers a subset of the Talent Development Capability Model focused more on the skill statements. (Formerly the Certified Professional in Learning & Performance (CPLP))

Benefits of CPLP Certification

Though it may seem a costly investment, it has incredible merits. Over time, it shows that the talent development professional is committed to their profession. It is also ideal for anyone who has not been actively working and may lack references. The profession also benefits from this certification as it allows for standards to be defined. Think about a large organisation, with different departments and people holding various job titles. Companies have a core mission that they are looking to achieve. To reach this, they require human resource. The Certified Professional in Learning and Performance (CPLP) offered by the ASTD Certification Institute offers workplace learning and performance (WLP) professions an opportunity to enhance credibility and prove value in an increasingly competitive marketplace.

Eligibility and Requirements

To embark on the CPLP certification journey, aspiring candidates must meet specific eligibility criteria. A CPTD candidate must has at least five years of related work experience and should have deep knowledge and experience applying the principles for enhancing employee talent development.

The Certification Process

The first step is to know where to find the program offering. It is offered by the Association for Talent Development (ATD). The second step is to be active in the talent development field. To get the certification, there is a cost of $1,250 that needs to be factored in. This will cover the testing, as well as the certification if one adequately passes the test. However, it is worth noting that the person seeking this certification will be responsible for purchasing all resources and materials needed to complete the course. Getting CPLP certification is not easy. It requires full time commitment when preparing for the test. As a talent development professional, it is necessary to consistently take note of new trends within the industry.

Recertification

As a talent development professional, it is necessary to consistently take note of new trends within the industry. This is because completing the CPLP program and getting certified is not enough. Every three years, the CPLP certification becomes invalid. The CPLP® credential is valid for three years. Recertification is earned through professional development. CPLPs must accumulate 60 CPLP® recertification points within the three year recertification period. Detailed information and resources that support the recertification process can be found in Part 4 of the Certification Handbook.
