Navigating Scholarship Opportunities at Michigan State University and Beyond

For students aspiring to join Michigan State University (MSU) or Northern Michigan University (NMU), understanding the landscape of available scholarships is crucial. This article provides a detailed overview of scholarship opportunities at both institutions, including eligibility criteria, application processes, and renewal requirements. Additionally, it explores external scholarships applicable to pre-veterinary and veterinary students, offering a comprehensive guide to funding your education.

Michigan State University (MSU) Scholarship Programs

MSU is committed to supporting its students through a variety of scholarship programs. The MSU College of Veterinary Medicine uses the MSU scholarships system, AcademicWorks, to manage scholarships. DVM and veterinary nursing students will be invited to complete a conditional application each year to update their information and interests. Scholarships will be awarded in the spring and summer for the following academic year. The MSU Veterinary Nursing Program offers additional scholarships for current veterinary nursing students.

Eligibility and Application for MSU Scholarships

To be considered for any MSU College of Veterinary Medicine scholarships, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) must be submitted. Students will need to update their information and interest in AcademicWorks annually. AcademicWorks and Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) information will be used to match available scholarships with students that qualify. The College will be able to award funds to eligible students on a rolling basis.

Attention: Donors set specific criteria for scholarships. If a student does not match requirements set by donors such as financial need, academic criteria and/or interest, the Scholarship Team is unable to award funds.

Types of MSU Scholarships

There is a wide array of available scholarships, including scholarships for tuition, conferences, and educational materials. The university aims to attract high-achieving students from around the globe, awarding scholarships to students who demonstrate outstanding intellectual ability or special achievements.

  • University Distinguished Scholarships: Selection based on academic record, programs, and interviews.
  • Joseph R. & Sarah L. Williams Scholarships: Specific selection criteria.

Each scholar also secures a position in the MSU Honors College Professorial Assistantship program, which provides a two-year paid undergraduate research opportunity under the mentorship of faculty members.

Financial Aid at MSU

The MSU Office of Financial Aid provides extensive information regarding financial aid and loans for veterinary medical students. The Office of Financial Aid at MSU College of Veterinary Medicine aims to help students with grants, scholarships, and loans. The College of Veterinary Medicine also provides students with three financial aid officers.

External Scholarship Opportunities

Often, outside scholarships entities will require applicants to submit required materials directly to them.

Northern Michigan University (NMU) Scholarship Programs

NMU offers a range of scholarships to support students based on academic merit, residency, and program eligibility. These awards are designed to make education more accessible and affordable.

If a high school computes more than one GPA (e.g weighted and unweighted), we will use the higher of the two. Students who complete college-level work prior to receiving their high school diploma are considered to be entering first-year students (with credit). New freshman/first-year admission and scholarship policies apply.

Scholarship Competition

For high school students who will be graduating in 2026 and entering college in Fall 2026, the Presidential Scholars Competition is designed for high school seniors to compete for 15"full-ride" scholarships. Approximately 200 additional scholarships will be awarded to participants. This year's competition will take place in-person, on NMU's campus, with a virtual option available if needed. Dorothy Zhao: A Marshall Scholar from MSU

EAST LANSING — Dorothy Zhao is Michigan State University's 20th Marshall Scholar. Zhao, who will graduate in April, is one of 51 students across the United States this year who were awarded Marshall scholarships to pursue their master's or doctoral degrees in the United Kingdom. Zhao plans to graduate with three degrees from MSU. She started at MSU as a psychology major. After joining a behavior neuroscience lab she decided she was more interested in the neuroscience behind what could be causing abnormal psychology behavior, so she added the neuroscience degree. She had already taken most of the classes for a human biology major and added that degree as well. Zhao said she has been taking between 17 and 20 credits a semester. Outside of class, she's the current president of Psi Chi International Honor Society.
