Canvas Assignment Submission Guide for Students
Canvas is a learning management system that offers various ways for students to submit assignments. This guide provides a comprehensive overview of how to manually submit assignments in Canvas.
Introduction
Submitting assignments is a crucial part of the learning process. Canvas simplifies this process by allowing instructors to specify different online submission types. As a student, understanding these submission types and how to use them is essential for successfully completing your coursework. Let's explore the steps involved in submitting assignments through Canvas.
Accessing the Assignment
- Locate the Assignment: Begin by navigating to the specific course in Canvas where the assignment is located.
- Click the Assignment Title: Once you've found the assignment, click on its title. This action will direct you to a screen containing the assignment instructions and details.
Starting the Submission Process
- Review Instructions: Carefully read and understand the assignment instructions provided on the screen.
- Click "Start Assignment": After reviewing the instructions, click the "Start Assignment" button to initiate the submission process. Note that if you cannot see the "Start Assignment" button, your instructor may not want you to submit your assignment online or the availability date has passed. View the description of the assignment for instructions, or contact your instructor for assistance.
Submission Types
Your instructor determines the appropriate submission types for each assignment. Canvas offers several options, including:
File Upload
- Select File Upload: If your instructor allows file uploads, you'll see the "Upload File" option.
- Choose Your File: Click "Upload File" to browse your computer and select the file you want to submit. Alternatively, if you have already uploaded your assignment to Canvas, click the "Click here to find a file you've already uploaded" link.
- Submit: Once the file is selected, click the "Submit Assignment" button.
Text Entry
- Select Text Entry: If your instructor allows text entry, select the "Text Entry" tab.
- Type or Paste Text: A Rich Content Editor will appear. You can either type your response directly into the editor or copy and paste text from another document.
- Submit: After entering your text, click the "Submit Assignment" button.
Webcam Submission
- Select Webcam: If you want to submit a photo, use the "Use Webcam" option.
- Take a Photo: Take a photo using your webcam.
- Submit: Click the "Submit Assignment" button to submit the photo.
Post-Submission Information
After submitting your work, you'll see information in the Sidebar about your submission. This includes:
- Submission Status: Confirmation that your assignment has been successfully submitted.
- Submission Details: Details about the submission, such as the date and time of submission and the file submitted (if applicable).
Resubmitting Assignments
If your instructor allows, you may resubmit another version of your assignment using the "Re-submit Assignment" link or the "New Attempt" button. When you resubmit an assignment, you can only access and view your most recent submission. However, instructors can view all of your submissions.

Important Considerations
- Storage Quota: Files uploaded using the Rich Content Editor count toward your user storage quota. Any attachments added as part of a graded assignment submission are also copied to your user files but are not counted against your user quota. However, once the file has been uploaded as a submission, you cannot delete the file.
- Availability Dates: If you cannot see the "Start Assignment" button, your instructor may not want you to submit your assignment online or the availability date has passed.
- Submission Attempts: Your instructor may limit the number of submission attempts you are allotted for an assignment.
- Grade Calculations: A banner may appear above your assignment to indicate that your instructor has removed the assignment from total grade calculations.
- Google Drive Submissions: If the assignment uses file restrictions, submitting through the Google Drive tab results in an error.
- Celebration Animation: If enabled in your account, Canvas plays a celebration animation (confetti) when you submit an assignment on time.
- Large Files: Large files submitted using the File Upload tab display a submission status indicator.
Receiving Feedback
Once your instructor has graded your submission, you will be notified via the channels that you specified in your Notification Preferences. You can then view your grade and feedback in Canvas.
