Application Platforms and Eligibility

Transfer applications to Brown are submitted online via the Common Application. However, military veterans and current service members must apply via Brown’s Veterans Application, regardless of their year of high school graduation or any college credits earned to date. Candidates who have been out of high school for six or more years by the time of proposed enrollment at Brown must apply via Brown's Resumed Undergraduate Education (RUE) Application, even if they have earned some college credits. Applicants who meet eligibility for the RUE program should not submit a transfer application via the Common Application.

Credit Requirements for Transfer

Transfer students submitting an application to Brown in the fall of 2025 for entrance in fall of 2026 will only be eligible to apply if they will have completed two (2) or four (4) semesters, or three (3), four (4), or six (6) quarters, or their equivalent of full-time college enrollment before September 2026. Candidates who will have completed three (3) semesters or five (5) quarters by the time of entry are only eligible for spring entry. University rules stipulate that anyone admitted as a transfer must be enrolled full-time at Brown for at least four semesters prior to earning an undergraduate degree, and transfer candidates may not forfeit any previously earned credit. For this reason, we cannot consider transfer applications from students who will have accrued more than four semesters of college work or equivalent prior to their enrollment at Brown.

High school students who are currently enrolled in dual-degree programs or early college programs, or who are otherwise taking college classes while enrolled in high school, are ineligible to apply as transfers. These students may only apply as first-year applicants. College credits earned as a high school student may not be transferred to Brown.

Students who have already completed a bachelor’s degree at another college are ineligible to apply as transfers.

Transfer students may only submit one application per intended calendar year of entry. Once you have applied for transfer admission, you may not reapply to enter as a transfer student in the same calendar year. For example, if you apply in October of 2023 for entrance in January of 2024, you may not reapply in March of 2024 for entrance in September of 2024.

Spring semester entry is available to US citizens and US permanent residents only. Fall semester entry is available to US citizens, US permanent residents, and international students.

Applicants from international universities that only provide year-end grades must have completed a year or more of their undergraduate education prior to applying. We will make exceptions to this rule for applicants from international universities that provide graded fall semester transcripts for their students.

Common Application (Transfer Application): The primary application form, submitted online.
Brown's Supplemental Essays: Essays specific to Brown, submitted through the Common Application.
Application Fee: An $80 application fee, or a fee waiver for eligible students. The College Board provides fee waivers to students who take the SAT, and these fee waivers are accepted by our office.
Official High School Transcript: An official copy of your high school transcript.
Official College Transcript(s): Official transcripts and final grades from all previous college coursework, including your most recently completed semester or quarter. If you are not currently enrolled in college, please submit an official copy of all college transcripts.
Two Instructor Evaluations: Evaluations from two faculty members or TAs who have taught you at your current college. If this isn't possible, you may replace one with a recommendation from a high school teacher from your senior year. Brown will accept a college's own standard form in lieu of the Common Application form.
Mid-Term Report: Complete this form yourself, then upload it through your Brown Applicant Portal. Quarter system students should submit an updated College Transcript that includes final grades for their winter quarter classes by the deadline at the left and then submit a Mid Term Report with progress grades for their spring quarter courses by April 17. Quarter system students should not submit winter grades via the Mid Term Report.
Test Scores (Optional): Brown is test-optional for transfer applicants through the 2025-2026 admission cycle. If you choose to submit scores, testing must be completed by September (spring entry) or February (fall entry).

By mid-March or mid-October (depending on which application deadline you have chosen), the Office of Admission will send transfer applicants a username and password that they can use to check the completeness of their application and upload optional supplementary material through the Brown Applicant Portal. If you have applied for transfer admission, we will allow late submission of transcripts and recommendation letters. Please also regularly monitor your checklist. Academic Expectations and GPA

Brown seeks transfer students with a strong academic record. Over the past three years, the average college GPA of accepted transfer applicants has ranged from 3.86 to 3.91. Aiming for a GPA close to 4.0 is highly recommended to demonstrate your ability to excel in a rigorous academic environment.

Choosing the Right Classes

When planning your college class load, consider your current school’s requirements as well as your intended major at Brown. Even though Brown has an Open Curriculum, demonstrating a clear academic focus is crucial. If you hope to study math, you need to be taking math classes.

Getting Good Grades

College courses are, by nature, harder than high school classes. Even if you take courses that sound like easy As, they might be more challenging than you expected. It's ok! You just need to be proactive. If you start to feel the struggle, go to the tutoring center or make a study group, and make sure to go to office hours! We love office hours because they allow you to not only get your class questions answered but also develop a relationship with your professors… which can come in handy when it is time to ask for those letters of recommendation.

Just like you need to choose the right classes, you should choose the right extracurriculars. You want at least some of your extracurriculars to connect to what you hope to study.
