Brewton-Parker Christian University: A History of Academics and Transformation

Introduction

Brewton-Parker Christian University (BPCU) stands as a private Baptist institution in Mount Vernon, Georgia, with a rich history rooted in serving the educational needs of its surrounding community. From its humble beginnings as a boarding school to its current status as a degree-granting university, BPCU has undergone significant transformations while maintaining its commitment to a biblical worldview and providing educational opportunities in rural southeast Georgia.

The Genesis of Brewton-Parker

In 1904, Reverend John Carter Brewton, pastor of McRae Baptist Church, and Charles Benton Parker, a prominent businessman, recognized the need for educational opportunities in Montgomery County and the surrounding areas. With no public high schools available at the time, they resolved to establish a private boarding school. Their vision garnered enthusiastic support from the Telfair and Daniell Baptist associations, leading to the establishment of the Union Baptist Institute.

The location was strategically chosen between Mount Vernon and Ailey, as the towns collectively offered more support than any other community. The Union Baptist Institute, officially chartered on April 28, 1904, joined forces with other Baptist associations. The co-educational institution opened its doors on September 12, 1905, boasting a four-building campus and serving 160 students in grades one through eleven. The school's inaugural year proved successful, and word spread quickly, leading to a surge in enrollment to 365 students.

Evolution and Expansion

As the educational landscape evolved, so too did Brewton-Parker Institute. In 1923 and 1927, college freshmen and sophomore classes were introduced, transforming the institution into a junior college. Elementary classes were phased out in 1929, followed by high school classes in 1948. The school was renamed Brewton-Parker Junior College and placed under the governance of the Georgia Baptist Convention.

By the 1980s, the emergence of public two-year community colleges and an increasing demand for four-year college graduates prompted further transformation. On December 9, 1986, Brewton-Parker College officially became a four-year institution, expanding its academic offerings and broadening its reach.

Brewton-Parker Christian University offers undergraduate degrees across seven academic departments, encompassing 19 majors. The university emphasizes practical, hands-on experience through internships integrated into most of its programs, blending academic content with real-world application.

The division provides undergraduate degrees in History, English, and General Studies, each crafted to equip students with a broad understanding of the human experience through rigorous analysis and reflective inquiry. By engaging with diverse texts, historical narratives, and interdisciplinary approaches, students develop strong analytical, communication, and research skills that are essential for a wide range of careers. History Program

The Bachelor of Arts in History program challenges students to think critically, analyze deeply, and communicate thoroughly, preparing them for a wide array of careers. The program is rooted in a biblical worldview, with professors dedicated to helping students find their full potential as they seek God’s purpose for their lives. Students seeking a minor in History will receive a foundational understanding of history relating to the American, Western, and non-Western traditions. HIS 202 United States to 1877 Credit Hours: 3This course is a survey of the history of the United States from 1492 through 1877 with emphasis on the period from the end of the Colonial Era through the Civil War and Reconstruction.
HIS 203 United States 1877 to the Present Credit Hours: 3This course is a survey of the history of the United States from the end of Reconstruction through the modern era. You may choose 4 of any HIS course.

English Program

By earning your Bachelor of Arts in English at BPC, you will lay the foundation for a versatile career. As you study great works of literature, you will simultaneously cultivate writing and critical thinking skills as you develop a unique sensitivity to other peoples and cultures. These skills will further develop your creativity, which, coupled with a proficiency in communication and writing, will set you apart from the crowd as you apply for jobs in a wide variety of disciplines. Filtered through our commitment to a biblically-centered curriculum, your studies will maintain respect for the unique voices of others as you examine the realities of a fallen world and pursue Christian principles of redemption and reconciliation. With a minor in creative writing, you can further expand your creativity as you examine the social, philosophical, and moral themes that have shaped today’s society. By the time you complete your Bachelor of Art in English, you will be able to:

Develop mastery of the English language in all respects: listening, reading, speaking, and writing.
Read critically and with discernment, locating works of literature geographically, chronologically, and by genre. They will identify broader movements and traditions within British, American, and global literatures in English while maintaining respect for the unique voices of individual writers.
Apply the liberal arts, literary theory, and philosophy of literature to read literature in light of other disciplines, recognizing both the value and limitations of these varied approaches.
Locate language and literature within the Great Tradition, examining literature in light of its antecedents in the Bible and in classical literature and philosophy.

School of Education

Mount Vernon, Ga. - Beginning with the Spring 2026 semester, Brewton-Parker Christian University’s education programs will be unified under the newly established school of education.

A Commitment to Accessibility and Diversity

As the only independent college in rural southeast Georgia, Brewton-Parker Christian University plays an important educational role in one of the state’s poorest areas. It serves many first generation college students and provides learning assistance to other, non-traditional students seeking to improve their knowledge and skills. There is a 2:1 female-male student ratio and a 15:1 student-faculty ratio.

Extracurricular Activities

Beyond academics, Brewton-Parker offers a variety of extracurricular activities to enrich the student experience. Intramural sports such as basketball, softball, table tennis, tennis, ultimate Frisbee, and volleyball provide opportunities for recreation and camaraderie. Student groups like the concert choir (Voices of Truth), concert band, Student Activities Council, Rotaract, Circle K, Alpha Omega Campus Ministry, Student Government Association, and Baptist Campus Ministry (Baptist Collegiate Ministries, a.k.a. BCM) foster community and provide outlets for diverse interests.

The Brewton-Parker Barons compete in intercollegiate athletics, with the men's baseball team winning the NAIA championship in 1997. The Barons baseball team was declared co-champions of the SSAC Championship on May 3, 2010, and the Barons ranked as high as 15 nationally in that year. The Brewton-Parker College men's track & field team won the 2022 Indoor Conference Championship in the SSAC.

Accreditation

O. Brewton-Parker Christian University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to award associate, baccalaureate, and master's degrees. Degree-granting institutions also may offer credentials such as certificates and diplomas at approved degree levels.

Noteworthy Personnel

Mrs. Mock: Beginning her teaching career in Middle Georgia in 1995, Mrs. Mock worked with a state funded program that served some of the most disadvantaged special needs students within the local school districts. She ultimately moved into leadership positions within the organization, serving and training others in multiple initiatives. Mrs. Mock holds a Bachelor’s degree from Brewton-Parker Christian University, a Master’s degree in Education with a concentration in Behavior Disorders, and an Education Specialist degree in Educational Administration from Georgia College and State University.
Candace Lilford: Candace Lilford graduated with her bachelor’s degree in Theatre Generalism in 2021 from Anderson University and with her master’s degree in English Literature in 2023 from the University of Alabama. As part of her two-year master’s program, Ms. Lilford taught sections of ENG 101 and 102, while also serving as teaching assistant for British Literature Survey courses and volunteering in the university’s Writing Center.
Linda Armstrong: Linda Armstrong earned an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice Technology from Southeastern Technical College and a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Walden University. Throughout her career, Linda has worked with diverse populations, including at-risk youth and families and youth in crisis because of mental health and other issues.
Willie Ford: “If you must look back, do so forgivingly. If you will look forward, do so prayerfully. It’s truly a joy to be back in a place that has shaped me so profoundly. I’m Willie Ford, a proud 2022 graduate of historic Brewton-Parker Christian University, holding a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology with a Minor in Education. Following my graduation, I embarked on a journey in education, teaching Special Education within the Vidalia City School District. In addition to my role as an educator, I had the privilege of serving as the Unit Director at the J.D. Rabun Boys and Girls Club. All the while, I was honored to pastor at the esteemed New Hope Baptist Church of Rhine, Georgia.
Dusty Arnold: Dusty Arnold is a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Board Certified Behavior Analyst as well as a BPC alumnus. He has years of experience working with a variety of mental health issues including anxiety, grief, and challenges related to Autism. He specializes in behavior-related interventions that can help college students build on their strengths to set achievable goals while also learning how to deal with the thoughts and feelings that sometimes get in the way.
Carl Anthony “Tony” Wardlaw: For over 25 years, Dr. Wardlaw has worked in leadership, counseling, and pastoring. Beginning with working in middle management for a manufacturing company in Douglas, GA, Dr. Wardlaw has also worked in the academic, nonprofit, public, and private sectors. As a member of the renowned International Gospel Singing Group, The Wardlaw Brothers, Dr. Wardlaw has traveled all over the nation and abroad ministering and singing the Gospel of Christ Jesus. Dr. Wardlaw has served as a consultant for various agencies and has worked as a Fatherhood Coordinator and G.E.D. Dr. Wardlaw holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in International Business from the University of Georgia, two master’s degrees from Troy University (Master of Science in Clinical Counseling and Psychology and Master of Education in Counseling), and a Doctorate in Education from Argosy University in Organizational Leadership.

Challenges and Resilience

Brewton-Parker College faced a significant challenge in the late 1990s when a scandal involving fraud in the college's financial aid department emerged. A lawsuit filed by Martha Faw, then the assistant director of financial aid, revealed that regulations regarding student eligibility, citizenship, and work-study programs were not being followed. In 1998, the college agreed to repay the government $4 million in what was reported as the largest qui tam recovery in Georgia history.

In the wake of the scandal, Y. David R. Smith became college president in 1998. He acknowledged the past issues and commended those who spoke out against them. The college briefly outsourced the administration of their financial aid program until a new college policy and procedures manual was established in the Fall of 2000.

In June 2012, the college's regional accreditor placed the college on probation. Two years later, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) voted to remove Brewton-Parker College from membership.

Despite these challenges, Brewton-Parker Christian University has demonstrated resilience and a commitment to improvement, striving to provide a quality education while upholding its Christian values.
