Hall of Fame Inductees: Celebrating Athletic Prowess
The Bluefield University Athletics Hall of Fame serves as a platform to recognize and celebrate the remarkable accomplishments of former athletes, coaches, trainers, athletic administrators, and other individuals who have significantly impacted the university's athletic programs. Induction into the Hall of Fame is a prestigious honor, reserved for those who have demonstrated exceptional athletic prowess, leadership, and commitment to Bluefield University.
In a recent ceremony, Bluefield University inducted several distinguished graduates into its Athletics Hall of Fame, acknowledging their outstanding achievements in sports, careers, and character. University President Dr. Mullins expressed immense pride in welcoming these former athletes, highlighting their accomplishments at Bluefield and their continued positive impact on their respective communities.
Among the honorees was Robert Iden ’90, a men's basketball player renowned for his exceptional 3-point shooting skills. During his time with the Rams, Iden contributed to three national Final Four teams and two national runner-up teams. He was a key member of teams that consistently achieved over 24 wins per season, including the 1988 team that averaged an impressive 101 points per game and finished second nationally. Iden also played a pivotal role in the Rams' historic first-ever NCAA Division I victory over Liberty University, a game that ended with a final score of 100-97 and paved the way for subsequent victories against nationally ranked opponents.
Tracey Parker, Jr. ’18, a football player, also received the honor. Parker became a cornerstone of head coach Dewey Lusk's defensive line. Throughout three of his four seasons with the Rams, Parker earned all-conference honors from the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC). Additionally, he was recognized for his achievements by being named to the Christian Colleges All American lists for two seasons.

Jimmy Stemple ’99, a men's basketball player, was also inducted into the Hall of Fame. Stemple played a crucial guard position for the Rams during his junior and senior seasons, leaving an indelible mark with his exceptional playmaking abilities. Notably, he recorded the second-highest number of assists in a single game (24) against Covenant (GA) on February 13, 1998, which also set a new NAIA record at the time. Stemple's remarkable achievement shattered the previous Bluefield record in just two seasons, and he continues to hold a prominent position on the all-time list. His numerous accolades include amassing 380 assists during regular-season play, serving as a full-time starter and co-captain during his two seasons at Bluefield, being featured in Sports Illustrated's "Faces in the Crowd" section for his record-breaking assist performance, and earning recognition on the All-TVAC athletic and academic teams in both years. Stemple's clutch performance in the 1998-99 season saw him sink the game-winning 3-point shot at the buzzer, propelling the team to victory over 3rd-ranked Southern Oregon in the first round of the NAIA Division II National Tournament.
The 2009 Bluefield College Baseball team was collectively inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame, with Coach Mike White accepting the award on behalf of the players. This team achieved a significant milestone by winning the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Baseball World Series. During that remarkable season, the team showcased exceptional pitching prowess, finishing 7th nationally in Earned Runs Allowed with an impressive average of 3.132 and ranking 12th in Earned Run Average (ERA) at 3.950. Offensively, the team demonstrated remarkable power and consistency, recording 23 total triples, which placed them 11th nationally, and averaging 0.434 triples per game, ranking 14th. They maintained an outstanding overall batting average of .341 and an impressive slugging percentage of .528, accumulating a total of 357 RBIs.
Football's Resurgence and Impact

The university experienced a period without a football program before its resurgence, marking a significant milestone in the university's athletic history.
The return of football to Bluefield College was officially announced in June 2010. This decision marked a new era for the university's athletic program, generating excitement among students, alumni, and the broader community. The reinstatement of football underscored the university's commitment to providing a comprehensive athletic experience and fostering a strong sense of school spirit.
The Rams secured their first football win since 1941. This victory was a momentous occasion for the university, signifying the culmination of hard work, dedication, and unwavering belief in the program's potential. It not only boosted morale but also served as a catalyst for future success.

A Tradition of Excellence: The Rams' Athletic Achievements
The Bluefield Rams have consistently demonstrated their athletic prowess across various sports, earning recognition both within their conference and at the national level. The Rams' achievements are a testament to the dedication of their athletes, the expertise of their coaches, and the unwavering support of the university community.
The Bluefield Rams men's basketball team achieved national recognition between 2007 and 2009 under the guidance of head coach Jason Gillespie. In the 2008-09 season, the Rams achieved remarkable success, winning 27 games, including an unblemished 18-0 record in AAC conference play, securing the regular-season championship. Despite a narrow defeat in the conference tournament to King University, the Rams finished the season ranked seventh in NAIA Division II, solidifying their position among the nation's elite teams.
The baseball program has also experienced significant success, highlighted by a school-record 41 wins in 2010 and a runner-up finish in the NCCAA World Series against North Greenville. In 2007, they were the NCCAA Mid-East Regional Champs, and made their fourth NCCAA World Series appearance in 2014. Current head coach Mike White has achieved over 500 wins with Bluefield and has guided numerous players to professional baseball careers.
Building a Foundation: Cross Country and Track & Field
Bluefield University's commitment to athletic excellence extends beyond traditional sports like football, basketball, and baseball. In 2014, the university made a strategic decision to establish a cross country and track and field program, further expanding its athletic offerings and providing opportunities for student-athletes to excel in these disciplines.
Bluefield hired Coach Travis Yoder in 2014 to build a cross country and track and field program from ground zero. In his first year as head coach he had the schools first NCCAA national qualifier in school history (Kendall Haynes). After his first year Coach Travis Yoder left Bluefield. Bluefield then hired Coach Kendall Haynes to Coach cross country and is now building a track and field program as well.

They were also a member of the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA), primarily competing as an independent in the Mid-East Region of the Division I level until after the 2019-20 school year to fully align with the NAIA.
