Mastering Blackboard Learn: A Comprehensive Guide for ACCC Users
The transition to online learning has presented both instructors and students with unique challenges. This article provides a comprehensive tutorial on Blackboard Learn, focusing on resources and strategies for effective online teaching and learning within the ACCC (Atlantic Cape Community College) environment. Whether you're a student navigating online courses or an instructor adapting to remote teaching, this guide will help you leverage Blackboard Learn to its full potential.
Navigating the Online Learning Landscape
The shift to online education requires both flexibility and adaptability. For students, this means developing strong time management skills, maintaining consistent communication, and staying organized. Blackboard Learn serves as the central hub for online courses, providing access to course materials, assignments, and communication tools.
Resources for Students
ACCC provides a dedicated Online Learning page that offers guidance and resources specifically designed for students navigating the online environment. This page is a valuable starting point for understanding the expectations and best practices for online learning.
Support for Instructors
Instructors can find comprehensive support on the Online Teaching page, which includes course design guides, virtual classroom options, and student engagement tools. These resources are designed to help instructors create engaging and effective online learning experiences. The "Basic Steps of Teaching Online" course, designed by ACCC-LTS (Academic Computing and Communications Center - Learning and Teaching Services), offers best practices, resources, tools, and technologies for transitioning from remote teaching to fully online instruction.
Accessing Blackboard Learn
To access Blackboard Learn, you will need:

- The web address of your institution's Blackboard site.
- Your username.
- Your password.
In most cases, the institution's web address will direct you to the login page. You can also search the web for "[Your Institution's Name] Blackboard help" to find the correct login page.
Single Sign-On (SSO)
Some institutions use single sign-on (SSO) for Blackboard authentication. With SSO, you can access multiple applications with a single login. For example, you might be able to use your Google account to log in to Blackboard. If you are already logged in to Google, Blackboard will automatically log you in as well.
When logging out of an SSO session, Blackboard will ask if you want to end all related sessions or continue. If you do nothing, all sessions will end in two minutes.
First Steps After Logging In
New users will see a welcome page that prompts them to create a profile. Before creating a profile, you must accept the Blackboard Profiles Terms of Service. Failure to accept these terms will restrict access to certain tools. You can choose to create a profile later if desired.
Essential Blackboard Learn Features and Functions
Course Overview and Structure
Upon logging in, take time to explore your course and understand its structure. Review the syllabus and weekly schedule as soon as they are available. Familiarizing yourself with the course layout will help you stay organized and on track.

Communication Tools
Blackboard Learn offers various communication tools to facilitate interaction between instructors and students. These may include:
- Announcements: Instructors use announcements to share important updates and reminders.
- Discussion Boards: Discussion boards provide a platform for students to engage in conversations and share ideas.
- Email: You can use Blackboard's email tool to communicate directly with your instructor and classmates.
- Virtual Classroom: Some courses may utilize virtual classroom tools for live lectures and discussions.
Assignments and Assessments
Blackboard Learn is used to submit assignments and take assessments. Pay close attention to due dates and instructions for each assignment. If you encounter any technical issues, reach out to tech support immediately.
Managing Your Account and Security
Retrieving a Lost or Forgotten Password
If you forget your password, use the "Forgot Your Password?" link on the login page. Follow the instructions to reset your password. Passwords are case-sensitive, must not contain spaces, and must contain at least one special character.
Changing Your Password
After logging in, you can change your password from your Profile page in the base navigation. The base navigation is the list that has your name in it when you first log in to Blackboard. Go to your profile and select "Change Password." On the "Change Password" panel, type your old password and your new password. Select "Save" when you're finished. It is recommended to change your password periodically to ensure security.
Understanding Session Control
- Session Timeout: If you are idle for over three hours, your session will end. This can happen if the browser is not sending data to Blackboard, such as when you are authoring a Discussion Board post or an Assignment submission. You will see a warning six minutes before you are signed out. If you were away from the computer for an extended time you will not be able to extend your session. When you close the warning, you'll return to the current page instead of returning to the login page. This allows you to copy anything authored before it is lost. You will redirect to the login page when you select any link or button on the page.
- Active Session Termination: Your institution may enable active session termination, requiring you to log in again during your session after a specified time (between 3 and 24 hours). This is regardless of your activity and is meant to enhance data security.
- Concurrent Session Control: Your institution may restrict users from accessing Blackboard on multiple devices simultaneously. If enabled, you will be logged out of your Blackboard session if you exceed the allowed number of concurrent sessions.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Account Lockout
For security reasons, the system may lock you out if you incorrectly enter your username or password too many times or if the login process takes too long. Your institution may allow you to unlock your account by resetting your password. Select "Forgot Password?" and follow the instructions. If your institution doesn’t allow you to unlock your account, you will need to wait until the lock period expires or contact your institution's IT help desk.
