Unveiling Beauty Pageant Scholarships: A Comprehensive Guide

Like the human face, beauty pageants can be pretty cover-ups that hide so much more beneath their facades. What you may have thought was just a face value competition on the surface might be worth a second look when it comes to the chance to pay for your education in a nontraditional, but very viable, manner. Did you know that hundreds of beauty competitions award their winning contestants with scholarship money for college? For a smattering of the beauty pageant sponsored financial rewards targeted specifically towards college, look no further. While often perceived as superficial displays of beauty, many beauty pageants offer substantial scholarship opportunities, providing young women with financial assistance for their college education. This article delves into the world of beauty pageant scholarships, exploring various organizations, eligibility requirements, and the potential benefits for aspiring students.

The Allure of Pageant Scholarships: More Than Just a Crown

Girls enter pageants for different reasons, but many young women are drawn to programs that give outstanding scholarships to their winners or even to the runners up. Beyond the glitz and glamour, beauty pageants can be a valuable avenue for young women seeking financial aid for higher education. These competitions provide a platform to showcase talent, intelligence, and community involvement, while simultaneously offering significant scholarship awards.

Miss America Organization: A Scholarship Powerhouse

The Miss America Organization is the world’s leading provider of scholarships to young women, providing more than 45 million dollars worth of scholarship assistance to more than 12,000 young women in one year alone. This organization generously provides scholarships to contestants in all 50 states plus the District of Columbia and the Virgin Islands. For example, the state pageant winners all receive a $1,000 scholastic award. For the contestants who take special honors and the crown, the scholarship awards are significant with Miss America’s Outstanding Teen winning $30,000 in scholarships. This pageant has awarded more than 125 million scholarship dollars in its 35 year history and continues to award nearly 5 million scholarship dollars annually. Miss America advertises itself as a program that is the leading provider of scholarships to women, and at the state and national level, that is definitely true. State level winners receive a state scholarship and at least $3,000 at Miss America. Even being a runner-up at the state and local level is a great way to earn scholarships, provided you are smart with your wardrobe spending (find sponsors or set a budget to keep your wardrobe costs in check).

The sister program to Miss America, Miss America's Outstanding Teen also offers some full scholarships to schools like Hollins University. State programs offer scholarship awards, but there are also some great scholarships at the national level. Visit: MaoTeen for more information. Are there others pageants in which you can earn scholarship money? Miss America's Outstanding Teen 2020 Peyton May.

America's Junior Miss: Recognizing Achievement

The AJM Scholarship Foundation, the organization behind America’s Junior Miss, administers college scholarships to the competition’s highest achievers. AJM has a fantastic track record of sponsoring talented and now graduated women who may not otherwise have had a chance of receiving such an education. Formerly known as Junior Miss, this program gives out incredible scholarships at the state and local program.

Cinderella Pageant: From Tots to Teens

The Cinderella Pageant, heralding the fairy tale that every little girl is familiar with, has divisions from the youngest Tots all the way through the eldest Teens and Women up to 26 years of age. $5000 cash awards are available at the highest level, but even for the younger set there are $2000-$4000 college scholarships and educational savings bonds available, along with a number of smaller awards for participants in the realm of around $500 that can be used for college expenses.

Miss American Coed (MAC): Family-Friendly Competition

Miss American Coed (MAC) Pageants have competitions at various levels in every US state, and give away hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in prizes. This pageant’s unique edge is that no girl under thirteen wears makeup, thus cutting down on some of the heavy emphasis on facial preparation of the other contests. It is a very family-friendly and age-appropriate event geared towards positive reinforcement and scholarship rather than narrow competition.

Miss Teenage California: Rewarding Outstanding Youth

The California Scholarship Foundation, founded in 1979, recognizes and rewards the outstanding female youth of California by administering the Miss Teenage California Pageant. Miss Teenage California wins a $10,000 scholarship and thousands of other scholarship dollars go to runners-up, finalists, and those who win special awards.

Collegiate Program

One of the great things about the Collegiate program is that graduate school counts! The winner receives a $10,000 scholarship among some other amazing prizes. Even though this program is relatively new, it's very competitive.

Miss High School America

The High School winner receives a scholarship in addition to a winter break trip with People to People. The program is growing really quickly and I think it says a lot about the opportunities, the competition experience and how organized the event is! If you haven't heard of this program before, find out if there is a state event coming up. Miss High School America 2019 titleholders.

Distinguished Young Women

The Distinguished Young Women program does not tout itself as a pageant, but the competition aspects are very similar. I've had the opportunity to participate in this program as well as judge two state programs and the organizers at the local, state and national level of DYW go above and beyond. It's been ten years since I competed in this program and it's still my favorite stage experience to date. Note that this program is only for high school seniors and you can only compete once. The program is free to enter and includes scholastics, fitness (a grueling fitness routine), talent, poise (speaking on stage) and interview. I cannot recommend this program strongly enough. In addition to cash scholarships, state winners are eligible for some amazing in-kind scholarships, including several colleges and universities that offer full rides to anyone who wins a state program.

College and University Sponsored Scholarships

In addition to the cash scholarship funds the contestants can win, many colleges and universities have offered scholarships based on different criteria. Keystone College in Pennsylvania awards state pageant winners in the states of Connecticut, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia a $3,000 scholarship, renewable for four years. An extra award is set aside for the Pennsylvania state winner. Eastern Arizona College offers a full tuition reimbursement to the winners of Miss Graham County and Miss Greenlee County, as well as the four runners-up in the pageants of the same name.
