Unveiling the Shadows: A Comprehensive Guide to the Bard College of Whispers in D&D 5e

Bards of the College of Whispers are masters of manipulation, secrets, and subtle influence. They weave webs of intrigue, using their words as weapons to sow discord and fear. Unlike their more jovial counterparts, these bards operate in the shadows, using their knowledge to acquire power and wealth, often earning the disdain of other bards who view them as parasites. This guide delves into the intricacies of the College of Whispers, exploring its features, multiclassing options, and strategic considerations for playing a compelling and effective Whispers bard in D&D 5e.

The Allure of the Whispers Bard

Most folk are happy to welcome a bard into their midst. Bards of the College of Whispers use this to their advantage. They appear to be like any other bard, sharing news, singing songs, and telling tales to the audiences they gather. In truth, the College of Whispers teaches its students that they are wolves among sheep. These bards use their knowledge and magic to uncover secrets and turn them against others through extortion and threats. Many other bards hate the College of Whispers, viewing it as a parasite that uses the bards’ reputation to acquire wealth and power. For this reason, these bards rarely reveal their true nature unless they must.

Core Features of the College of Whispers

The College of Whispers bard gains access to unique features that define their shadowy style of play:

  • Psychic Blades: When you hit a creature with a weapon attack, you can expend one use of your Bardic Inspiration to deal an additional 2d6 psychic damage to that target. This damage increases as you gain bard levels, making it a reliable source of extra damage.
  • Words of Terror: If you speak to a humanoid alone for at least 1 minute, you can attempt to seed paranoia and fear into its mind. At the end of the conversation, the target must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw against your spell save DC or be frightened of you or another creature of your choice.
  • Mantle of Whispers: At 6th level, you gain the ability to adopt a humanoid's persona. When a humanoid dies within 30 feet of you, you can magically capture its shadow using your reaction. You can use the shadow as an action. When you do so, it vanishes, magically transforming into a disguise that appears on you. You now look like the dead person, but healthy and alive. While you're in the disguise, you gain access to all information that the humanoid would freely share with a casual acquaintance. Such information includes general details on its background and personal life, but doesn't include secrets. Another creature can see through this disguise by succeeding on a Wisdom (Insight) check contested by your Charisma (Deception) check.
  • Shadow Lore: As an action, you magically whisper a phrase that only one creature of your choice within 30 feet of you can hear. The target must make a Wisdom saving throw against your spell save DC. It automatically succeeds if it doesn’t share a language with you or if it can’t hear you. If the target fails its saving throw, it is charmed by you for the next 8 hours or until you or your allies attack or damage it. While you gain no knowledge of this secret, the target is convinced you know it. While charmed in this way, the creature obeys your commands for fear that you will reveal its secret. It won’t risk its life for you or fight for you, unless it was already inclined to do so.

Multiclassing Considerations for the Whispers Bard

Multiclassing can enhance a Whispers bard's capabilities, but it requires careful planning. It's crucial to understand the trade-offs involved - delaying bard-specific features for abilities from another class. It is important to understand the reasons for doing so, what are you gaining and what are you losing.

Common Multiclassing Misconceptions:

  • Class features and spells known do not scale with character level, only class level. This means that your psychic blades damage is going to rely just on your bard level, it does not take your full character level into account.
  • While your cantrip damage will scale with your full character level, and you'll get more spell slots, do keep in mind that you're still restricted in your spells known.

General Multiclassing Advice:

  • It is generally recommended against multiclassing until you get to at least level 5 as a Bard. Font of Inspiration is huge for every bard, and not getting it hampers your character like you wouldn't believe.

Promising Multiclass Options

Here are some multiclass options that synergize well with the College of Whispers, along with their potential benefits and drawbacks:

1. Rogue (Swashbuckler or Assassin)

  • Synergy: The Rogue class, particularly the Swashbuckler or Assassin subclasses, complements the Whispers bard's skills in deception, infiltration, and dealing bursts of damage.
  • Benefits:
    • Sneak Attack: Adds significant damage to your attacks, especially when combined with Psychic Blades. The D6’s keep dropping with psychic blades and sneak attack.
    • Expertise: Further enhances your skills in areas like Deception, Stealth, and Persuasion.
    • Swashbuckler's Fancy Footwork: Allows you to disengage from melee combat without provoking opportunity attacks, enhancing your mobility. Fancy foot work let’s you get out of that ambush if the target doesn’t die. But if you’re trying to go toe to toe with a minion you still get to sneak while one on one.
    • Assassin's Assassinate: Provides advantage on attack rolls against creatures who haven't acted in combat, and deals extra damage on a hit.
  • Considerations: Delaying bard spell progression and access to higher-level bard features.
  • Level Allocation: Rogue 2 / Bard X (for early Expertise and Cunning Action), Rogue 3 / Bard X (for subclass features), or Rogue 5 / Bard X (for Uncanny Dodge).
  • Example: Tiefling Whispers Bard 6 / Rogue 2 looking forward to going Swashbuckler. It fits with a criminal background. Plus charisma plays into some of the abilities. And a instrument of the bards give a free invisibility for extra stealth and first attack with advantage.

2. Warlock (Great Old One)

  • Synergy: The Great Old One Warlock offers thematic and mechanical benefits that align with the Whispers bard's focus on manipulation and hidden knowledge.
  • Benefits:
    • Awakened Mind: At level 1, allows you to communicate telepathically with any creature within 30 feet, regardless of language. This combined with metamagic adopt subtle spell (silent friends or suggestion spell) is brilliant for social encounters. Want to influence a king in the middle of court and not be caught and executed? No problem.
    • Expanded Spell List: Access to spells like Dissonant Whispers that fit the theme of the College.
    • Invocations: Eldritch Invocations can provide utility and enhance your social skills.
  • Considerations: Requires Charisma as a primary stat, which Bards already utilize.
  • Level Allocation: Warlock 1-2 / Bard X.
  • Example: A Whispers bard dipping into Great Old One Warlock makes a lot of thematic sense. Think about it: you can read minds WITHOUT expending a spell slot. Combine that with Minor Illusion for all kinds of manipulative hijinks. Also. “Basically, if you tell anyone, we’ll kill you."

3. Sorcerer (Divine Soul)

  • Synergy: Divine Soul Sorcerer provides additional spellcasting options and metamagic, enhancing the bard's versatility and control over their spells.
  • Benefits:
    • Favored by the Gods: Grants access to the Bless and Cure Wounds spells, useful for support. Getting access to low level sorcerer spells as well really helped as I gained cure wounds as a bonus known spell and also Bless for party buffing.
    • Metamagic: Allows you to modify your spells in powerful ways, such as Subtle Spell for discreet casting or Twinned Spell for doubling the impact of your spells. If you go Sorcerer, you're going to want at least 3 levels for metamagic. Metamagic has some very, very good options for social and combat, especially for support-based spells that bards love having.
    • Font of Magic: Sorcery points can be used to fuel metamagic or convert into additional spell slots.
    • Constitution Saving Throw Proficiency: Important if you are going to use concentration spells.
  • Considerations: Delaying bard spell progression.
  • Level Allocation: Sorcerer 1 / Bard X (for early benefits), Sorcerer 3 / Bard X (for metamagic).
  • Note: Since the release of Tasha’s Cauldron, there is a feat you can take to gain two Sorcery Points and two Metamagic Options. So with that feat and a 2 level dip into Sorcerer, you actually get an additional SP over the 3 level dip, and without as big an impact on the Bard progression. But picking the right time to take that second level is rough because the Bard stuff is all so good, especially Whispers.
  • Example: Starting out with a level of Divine Soul sorcerer at first level. As both classes are full caster classes you maintain spell casting progression for your spell slots but lag behind in spells known - so when you get level 3 slots you can still only know level 2 spells. Multiclassing works really well for me in that character but it doesn't mea it would for you too.

4. Wizard (War Magic)

  • Synergy: War Magic Wizard can add tactical advantages and some martial prowess to the Whispers Bard, creating a unique blend of magic and combat support.
  • Benefits:
    • Tactical Wit: Adds Intelligence modifier to initiative rolls, improving action economy.
    • Arcane Deflection: Provides temporary AC or saving throw bonuses, enhancing survivability.
  • Considerations: Requires Intelligence, which might spread ability score too thin.
  • Level Allocation: Wizard 2 / Bard X.
  • Example: For story, not "build" reasons I am contemplating a so far Wizard 2 (war magic) Bard 3 Whispers possibly taking a dip into Barbarian.

5. Barbarian

  • Synergy: Thematically interesting, rage and psychic blades can work well together.
  • Benefits:
    • Rage: Can enhance combat prowess, especially in prolonged fights.
  • Considerations: Rage may negate some of the benefits of War Magic aside from tactical wit, but actually most of his spell list is largely divination to aid with exploration and study and spy mode. So detect thoughts, identify, hold person, etc. Sure he's got combat cantrips and he's curious about magical mass destruction but his own personal magic use is more a means for information and understanding.
  • Level Allocation: Barbarian 1-2 / Bard X.
  • Example: I'm thinking Whisper Bard + Barbarian = Seething Rage, and the War Magic's Tactical Wit makes him sort of Grey Hulk or latter day comics Hulk in having enhancements from wrath, but intelligently guided wrath.

Suboptimal Multiclass Options

  • Druid (Circle of the Moon): While Wild Shape might seem appealing for exploration, it doesn't synergize well with the Whispers bard's strengths in social interaction and manipulation. Wildshape can be decent for exploring, but you'll never be able to swim or fly, and that's not really playing to your strength as a bard - you inspire OTHERS to go exploring and make them better, and you already have access to Expertise, making the animal skills redundant. You can't social-fu as an animal, while your bard should be good at it, and level 2 wildshaping scales terribly for combat.

Building a Multiclass Whispers Bard: A Step-by-Step Approach

  1. Define Your Character Concept: Determine the core themes and abilities you want your character to possess. Are you a master manipulator who uses fear and paranoia? A shadowy assassin who strikes from the darkness? Or a subtle influencer who pulls the strings from behind the scenes? The real question is, what does the Whispers Bard lack that you're hoping to gain by multi-classing?
  2. Choose Your Primary Class: Bard should generally be your primary class, as it provides the core features of the College of Whispers and essential spellcasting abilities.
  3. Select a Complementary Class: Based on your character concept, choose a class that fills the gaps in your bard's skillset and enhances their desired abilities.
  4. Plan Your Level Progression: Carefully plan the order in which you'll take levels in each class, considering the impact on your spellcasting progression and access to key features.
  5. Optimize Your Ability Scores: Prioritize Charisma, as it's essential for both your bard spells and many of your class features. Depending on your chosen multiclass, you may also need to invest in Dexterity, Wisdom, or Intelligence.
  6. Select Spells and Feats Wisely: Choose spells and feats that complement your character's abilities and playstyle. Consider spells that enhance your social skills, control enemies, or deal additional damage.

Strategic Considerations for Playing a Whispers Bard

  • Embrace Deception and Intrigue: Use your skills in Deception, Persuasion, and Stealth to gather information, manipulate NPCs, and sow discord among your enemies.
  • Master the Art of Subtlety: Avoid drawing attention to yourself and your true motives. Operate in the shadows, using your words and actions to influence events from behind the scenes.
  • Exploit Fear and Paranoia: Use your Words of Terror ability to frighten enemies and turn them against each other. Spread rumors and plant seeds of doubt to create chaos and confusion.
  • Utilize Your Mantle of Whispers: Transform into fallen enemies to gain access to their knowledge and infiltrate their organizations. Use this ability to gather intelligence, spread misinformation, or assassinate key targets.
  • Control the Battlefield with Illusions and Enchantments: Use your bard spells to create illusions, charm enemies, and manipulate their perceptions. Control the flow of battle by distracting, disorienting, and incapacitating your foes.

A Narrative Hook: Unveiling a Conspiracy

Consider incorporating a compelling narrative hook into your Whispers bard's backstory. For example:

  • Plot: Uncover a conspiracy and truth behind the Dragon, Blasphemy, and the light of the kingdom that was stollen.
