Core Features of the College of Tragedy

The College of Tragedy is almost entirely reactive, which is unusual. Characters which can only react to circumstances typically struggle to solve problems, instead providing ways to endure those problems a bit longer. However, the College of Tragedy seems to be an exception to that rule. While the subclass's features almost all trigger in response to something, they don't conflict with resources or action economy which you could use proactively, leaving the Bard's skills and spellcasting totally free to go on the offensive.

Here's a breakdown of the key features that define the College of Tragedy bard:

Poetry in Misery (3rd Level)

At 3rd level, the bard who chooses the path of tragedy, "learns to harness the beauty in failure, finding inspiration in even the direst twists of fate". The bard can "exploit a foe's peril to instill deep feelings of sorrow and doom". Once per short or long rest, the bard can target one creature within 60 feet. The target must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or suffer the consequences. If the target fails this save, the bard rolls a Bardic Inspiration die. The target takes psychic damage equal to the result, and is plagued with regret for 1 minute. During this minute, the target has disadvantage on attack rolls and ability checks.

Poetry in Misery means that Bardic Inspiration is functionally bottomless if we have a few minutes outside of time for our party to stand around and attempt pointless ability checks or attack rolls.

Sorrowful Fate (6th Level)

At 6th level, a tragedy bard "learns to weave a magical narrative that draws out the fatal arrogance of your foes". When a creature scores a critical hit against them or an ally within 60 feet of them that they can see, the bard can use their reaction and expend one use of their Bardic Inspiration to target the attacking creature. For the next minute, any attack roll against the target is a critical hit on a roll of 18-20 on the d20.

At 6th level, the bard's "words can twist the power of fate to create triumph from the promise of future despair". When they make an attack roll or a saving throw, they can gain a +10 bonus to the roll, but the next attack roll or saving throw the tragedy bard makes is with a −10 penalty.

Sorrowful Fate lets us make one save-or-suck spell a huge problem once per rest. Now our build becomes a game of finding the right spells. We want spells that only allow a single save (or at least only one within the 3-round span of a typicaly combat) and only target a single creature. Bards don’t get many suitable spells, unfortunately.

Nimbus of Pathos (14th Level)

At 14th level, the tragedy bard can touch a willing creature as an action and "empower it with tragic heroism". For the next minute, the target gains several benefits:

The target gains a +4 bonus to AC.
The target has advantage on attack rolls and saving throws.
The target deals an extra 1d10 radiant damage with its weapon attacks.

When this effect ends, the creature immediately drops to 0 hit points and is dying.
