While admission is not guaranteed, applicants who meet the university's academic standards have a strong chance of being accepted. Academic Requirements: GPA and Coursework

GPA Expectations

GPA is a very important academic factor. The average GPA of admitted students at Ball State is 3.56, suggesting that successful applicants typically have a mix of A's and B's in their high school coursework, with very few C's. While there isn't a strict GPA cutoff, maintaining a solid GPA is crucial for a competitive application.

Strength of Curriculum

Ball State emphasizes the strength of an applicant's high school curriculum. Students should pursue the most challenging college preparatory courses available to them, including during their senior year. For Indiana residents, Ball State requires completion of the academic component of the Core 40 curriculum as the minimum preparation for students who are college bound. Completion of the Academic Honors Diploma is strongly encouraged. Out-of-state applicants who pursue comparable curricula may be reviewed for Honors College admission. Performance in academic course work will be evaluated.

Indiana Resident Admissions Program

Ball State University is participating in the Indiana Resident Admissions program, a guaranteed admission path for students who earn the new Enrollment Honors Plus Seal diploma. Students that do not meet those requirements are still encouraged to submit an application. Yes, high school seniors that are eligible for Indiana Resident Admissions still need to complete an application for admission to Ball State University. You can use either our Ball State application or the Common App. After that, you will need to have your official transcript sent from your High School (Parchment is the preferred method) and potentially your test scores. Yes! Please still apply - even if you don't have the Plus Seal. We do encourage that all students graduating from the class of 2028/2029 and on earn the Enrollment Seal diploma. Beyond diploma type, we consider a combination of factors including recent grade trends, academic performance, and test scores (if provided). Indiana Resident Admissions does not guarantee admission to an academic program or major.

Standardized Tests: A Test-Optional Approach

SAT/ACT Scores

Ball State University is test-optional, meaning applicants can decide whether or not to submit their SAT and/or ACT scores. Not providing scores will not count against you when reviewing your application for admission. Although optional for most applicants, we recommend that you still submit your SAT and/or ACT test scores if you believe they will benefit your standing in the admissions review process. Whether or not you decide to share your SAT or ACT test scores, you will apply to Ball State using our regular online application. If you choose to send in your test scores, we accept them sent from your testing agency or on your official high school transcript.

Score Ranges

Half the applicants admitted to Ball State University who submitted test scores have an SAT score between 1080 and 1260 or an ACT score of 20 and 24. However, one quarter of admitted applicants achieved scores above these ranges and one quarter scored below these ranges.

Superscoring

Ball State does superscore, which means they’ll consider your best test scores. This policy allows students to take the SAT or ACT multiple times and submit only the scores from the sections in which they performed the best. By combining the highest scores from each section, Ball State creates a "superscore," which can be advantageous for applicants.

Strategic Testing

If you choose to submit SAT scores and your SAT superscore is currently below a 1080, it is recommended that you consider prepping for the SAT and retaking it. Because you can choose which tests to send in, and Ball State forms your Superscore, you can take the SAT as many times as you want, then submit only the tests that give you the highest Superscore. Therefore, if your SAT superscore is currently below a 1080, we strongly recommend that you consider prepping for the SAT and retaking it. Even better, because of the Superscore, you can focus all your energy on a single section at a time. If your Reading score is lower than your other sections, prep only for the Reading section, then take the SAT. Then focus on Math for the next test, and so on.

ACT Considerations

The average ACT score at Ball State is 24. The 25th percentile ACT score is 20, and the 75th percentile ACT score is 26. Here it is: when you send ACT scores to colleges, you have absolute control over which tests you send. You could take 10 tests, and only send your highest one. This means that you have more chances than you think to improve your ACT score. To try to aim for the school's ACT requirement of 20 and above, you should try to take the ACT as many times as you can. By and large, most colleges do not superscore the ACT. Currently, only the ACT has an optional essay section that all students can take. The SAT used to also have an optional Essay section, but since June 2021, this has been discontinued unless you are taking the test as part of school-day testing in a few states. Ball State considers the SAT Essay/ACT Writing section optional and may not include it as part of their admissions consideration.

A complete application to Ball State University typically includes:

Ball State practices a rolling admission policy, meaning that students who want to apply with test scores won’t miss deadlines for admission, academic opportunities, and scholarships if they cannot complete the SAT and/or ACT before submitting their application.

The first step to take is confirming enrollment within your Cardinal Landing Portal. After that, students will need to complete additional tasks such as applying for housing, completing the FAFSA, registering for Orientation, and submitting their final transcript that confirms their graduation date and that they have met all Enrollment Honors Plus Seal requirements.
