Unlocking Autodesk Software: A Comprehensive Guide to Education Eligibility

Autodesk provides educators and students with access to its powerful suite of software and cloud-based services through the Education plan. This initiative aims to support learning, teaching, and research by offering free access to professional-grade tools. Understanding the eligibility requirements and the scope of this program is crucial for those seeking to leverage these resources. This article delves into the details of Autodesk's Education plan, outlining who qualifies, what software is available, and how to gain access.

Who is Eligible for the Autodesk Education Plan?

The Autodesk Education plan is specifically designed for individuals and institutions involved in formal education. Here's a breakdown of the eligibility criteria:

  • Students: To be eligible, students must meet the minimum age requirement and be enrolled at a qualified educational institution. They can participate in the Education plan to conduct thesis or master's work.
  • Educators: Educators who are employed by or are contractors of a qualified educational institution are eligible.
  • Qualified Educational Institutions: A qualified educational institution is defined as one that has been accredited by an authorized governmental agency for the primary purpose of teaching enrolled students. Note that most educational institutions worldwide qualify for educational access, with exceptions being institutions in countries subject to the United States trade embargo. Training centers and retraining programs are not considered qualified educational institutions, and therefore, users attending such courses are not eligible for the Education plan.

Scope of Educational Access

Educational access to Autodesk software and services may be used only for purposes directly related to learning, teaching, and research. Software and cloud-based services subject to an Educational license or subscription may be used by eligible users solely for Educational Purposes and shall not be used for commercial, professional, or any other for-profit purposes.

Software and Services Available

The Education plan gives eligible students free one-year, single-user access to Autodesk software and services for educational purposes. Access includes the current version plus up to three prior versions (where available).

All Autodesk software and services are available in English. Certain titles may also be available in additional languages. For more information about specific titles, see the Get products page.

Autodesk offers a range of software and cloud services through its Education plan. Some notable examples include:

  • Autodesk Process Analysis 360: Model, study, and optimize your manufacturing processes.
  • Autodesk Remote software service: Drive the Autodesk software installed on your primary computer from a remote PC or iPad to access native design data.
  • Autodesk Drive: Autodesk Drive and other web services are offered under the terms of service. The conditions that apply to a particular service may vary, so be sure to review the terms that accompany each service.
  • Cloud Storage: Education plan customers receive 25 GB of Autodesk cloud storage space per named user on the plan.

Autodesk cloud services are software-as-a-service (SaaS) options that can improve the way you design, visualize, simulate, and share your work with others. Please use cloud services thoughtfully to help ensure good service levels for everyone. Education plan users who regularly consume cloud services beyond market average may face additional restrictions.

How to Get Access

Getting started with Autodesk's Education plan is a straightforward process:

  1. Create an Autodesk Education Account: You need an Autodesk Education account to deploy software to multiple users or devices at your institution. If you're new to Autodesk, signing up for the Education plan will create your Autodesk account.
  2. Confirm Eligibility: School IT admins for educational institutions must confirm their eligibility to obtain access to single-user, multi-user, and network educational licenses. To confirm eligibility, users must provide proof of enrollment, employment, or contractor status at a qualified educational institution. To help maintain our commitment to providing free professional software for use in education, Autodesk has engaged SheerID, a third-party verification services provider, to verify eligibility for educational access.
  3. Provide Documentation: Complete checkout by filling in basic information about your school and yourself. You have up to 14 days to upload a suitable document.
  4. Enjoy Access: After your eligibility is confirmed, you’ll receive one year of free access to Autodesk software and services available from the Autodesk Education Community (US Site).

Important: Start the process of confirming your eligibility early enough to ensure that you have access to software when classes start. If your school isn't already listed as a qualified educational institution, it may take seven days or more to validate it.

Single Sign-On (SSO) for Institutions

With single sign-on (SSO), you use one set of credentials to sign into multiple Autodesk products and services with your organization's credentials. If you're an IT admin with an institution subscription, enabling SSO makes it easy to invite students and educators to your Autodesk account.

Changes to Licensing

In June 2024, Autodesk changed educational access to multi seat/network licenses from a three-year term to a one-year term. If you currently hold a one- or three-year multi seat/network license for Autodesk software that was issued prior to June 2024, the license will continue to run for its full term. When it expires, we recommend upgrading license(s) through the Education Community.

Important: Starting December 31st 2027, Autodesk will no longer offer new network and multi-seat licenses. To avoid interrupted access, Autodesk strongly recommends choosing educational institution subscriptions now.

Terms and Conditions

Free Autodesk software and/or cloud-based services are subject to acceptance of and compliance with the terms and conditions of the terms of use and/or other terms that accompany such software or cloud-based services.

Autodesk's Commitment to Privacy and Security

Protecting the privacy of our customers is important to Autodesk. The Autodesk Privacy Statement applies to the data you provide when you register for an Autodesk Account or submit information for Education eligibility. The Autodesk Security framework was designed around industry standards to ensure consistent security practices, enabling us to build secure, run secure, and stay secure.

Autodesk Certified Instructor (ACI)

Autodesk Certified Instructors (known as ACI) who are affiliated with an Authorized Training Center (ATC) or an Autodesk partner that is also an ATC are not eligible for the Education plan. An ATC can provide Autodesk Certified Instructors with access to genuine licenses which can be used for training purposes.
