Navigating UCLA Housing: A Comprehensive Guide

Securing housing at UCLA is a significant step for students. This article provides a detailed overview of UCLA housing, covering on-campus living, application processes, room assignments, and important policies. It aims to equip students with the knowledge necessary to navigate the UCLA housing system effectively.

On-Campus Living: Facilities and Amenities

UCLA offers a variety of on-campus housing options designed to cater to diverse student needs. These facilities provide more than just a place to sleep; they foster a sense of community and offer convenient access to campus resources.

Room Dimensions and Furnishings

The size of a standard desk in on-campus facilities is 30" h X 43" w X 25" d. This information is useful for students planning what personal belongings to bring and how to arrange their study space.

Dining Hall Access

If a student misplaces or loses their BruinCard, they may obtain one temporary meal pass per meal period from any of the four front desks to enter the dining hall. This ensures that students always have access to meals, even in unforeseen circumstances.

Safety and Security

UCLA prioritizes the safety and security of its residents. Here are some safety tips from the UCPD:

  • Always be aware of your surroundings in public and avoid distractions, such as using your mobile phone.
  • Do not prop open doors for your visitors.

Personal locks are prohibited from being installed on bedroom doors. Adding or changing locks without prior written permission of management is prohibited. These policies are in place to maintain the integrity of the building's security system and ensure the safety of all residents.

University Apartments Shuttle Service

The UCLA Shuttle Bus Service (U4) for University Apartments transit service is exclusive to permitted members of the Keystone/Mentone, Venice/Barry, and Clarington apartment communities. This service provides convenient transportation for students living in these apartment complexes.

Living Learning Communities

Living Learning Communities (LLC) are a place for students to explore their passions, get involved, receive support, and make friends. These communities offer a unique opportunity for students to connect with others who share similar interests.

The process of applying for and receiving a housing offer at UCLA can seem complex. This section breaks down the key steps and provides important information for prospective residents.

Application Timeline

UCLA Housing Services accepts applications and makes offers all year round based on availability. The first housing waitlist of each year will be created in early July. Due to limited availability and a high demand for housing, we cannot guarantee housing for all applicants. We make offers off of a randomly generated waitlist.

Room Sign-Up (RSU)

UCLA Housing Room Sign Up (RSU) is an online process that provides eligible returning students the opportunity to select their housing for the next academic year. To create and verify your roommate group for RSU, you must first submit an application via the application portal.

Room Assignments and Changes

Once a student receives a housing offer, the next step involves understanding room assignments and the possibility of making changes.

Room Types and Occupancy

Room types and occupancy levels are based on the expected number of students for the academic year.

Change of Assignment Request (CAR)

A Change of Assignment Request is a request that students can submit if they are interested in changing their assigned building and/or room type before moving in. Graduate and Family Housing CARs will be available once a student has an accepted offer until their contract start date. The CAR is now closed.

During the academic year, students looking to move to a new room can submit a room swap and transfer request during each quarter’s Open Transfer period. The transfer request form is now closed for Winter Quarter 2026. The next opportunity to submit a request will be during Spring quarter. Please review important information and required steps in the process here. Students residing in Graduate and Family housing are welcome to submit a transfer request after your contract start date.

Housing Payments

Understanding how to make housing payments is crucial for maintaining good standing with UCLA Housing Services.

BruinBill

Housing payments are to be made to the tenant’s BruinBill account. A tenant must have an activated UCLA Logon and password to access My UCLA and his/her BruinBill account.

Housing Eligibility

The below noted limits are dependent upon tenants maintaining ongoing eligibility for university-owned housing. These limits are counted in academic years, not calendar years.
