Arch Manning's Student ID Saga: Navigating College Life Under the Spotlight

Starting college is a significant transition for everyone, even for highly-touted recruits like Arch Manning. The early enrollee began his journey at the University of Texas, quickly experiencing a quintessential college mishap: losing his student ID. This seemingly minor incident rapidly gained traction on social media, highlighting the unique challenges Manning faces as both a backup quarterback and a prominent figure in college football.

From Five-Star Recruit to College Freshman

Arch Manning's arrival at the University of Texas marked the beginning of a new chapter. After a celebrated high school career at Isidore Newman, where he broke records previously held by his uncles Eli and Peyton, Manning transitioned from a nationally recognized football star to a college freshman. Despite his pedigree and the accompanying expectations, Manning is, at his core, a student navigating the unfamiliar landscape of college life. He is getting acclimated to the rush of new experiences, joining a directionally flummoxed crowd of freshmen as he meanders through the campus.

The Case of the Missing ID

The incident involving Manning's lost student ID serves as a humorous illustration of the everyday challenges faced by college students. The ID quickly made the rounds on social media in Austin and beyond. It was a classic college move entwined in a storied tradition that's as common as losing socks in the dryer. The person who found Manning’s ID posted on Snapchat. However, due to Manning's high profile, the incident was amplified, transforming a common occurrence into a viral sensation.

Navigating Fame and Football

Manning and those around him have done their best to make his experience as normal as possible, but do so armed with the knowledge that his last name doesn’t offer that luxury. From picture requests from classmates on campus to a lost student ID that went viral, Manning is both a backup quarterback and one of the biggest names in college football. He acknowledged the unusual attention he receives, stating, “I don’t see y’all giving this attention to other backups, but I’m used to it by now.”

Sarkisian's Take on the Incident

As for the viral story of losing his student ID early in his time on campus, Manning said he left it in an English class but a girl picked it up and immediately took it to the football offices. Manning got a FaceTime call from Sarkisian who was holding the ID when Manning answered. “I didn’t know it was going to blow up like that,” he said.

Focusing on Development

Despite the external noise and expectations, Manning remains focused on his development as a quarterback and his role within the Texas Longhorns program. After Texas’ backup quarterback Maalik Murphy transferred to Duke after the Big 12 Championship Game, Manning is officially Texas’ No. 2 and no longer working with the scout team, where earlier this season he served as Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe for Texas’ defense ahead of their win in Tuscaloosa in Week 2. He said he hasn’t considered transferring. “Obviously, there’s all these rumors but I haven’t looked into transferring at all. I’m just focused on developing and helping this team in any way I can and hopefully, one day playing for the University of Texas like I always wanted to,” Manning said.

Texas offensive coordinator Kyle Flood expressed confidence in Manning's progress, stating, “We’ve got a ton of confidence in Arch. His progression throughout the year has been excellent.”

NIL and Priorities

Manning also addressed the topic of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals, clarifying his limited involvement and focus on football. In April, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said Manning accepted no NIL money as part of coming to Texas, and Archie Manning said previously that his grandson won’t earn any NIL money until he’s a starter.

Embracing the Challenge

Manning acknowledged the challenges of his first year on the bench, stating it has produced “a lot of tough days,” but he reaffirmed his commitment to the University of Texas.
