National Eagle Scout Association (NESA) Scholarships

The National Eagle Scout Association (NESA) is a primary source of scholarships for Eagle Scouts. NESA's stated objective is "to serve Eagle Scouts and, through them, the entire movement of Scouting." NESA offers various academic scholarships to support Eagle Scouts who excel in their studies. NESA membership is mandatory to receive a scholarship. NESA is an organization that aims to support and connect Eagle Scouts and Eagle Scout alumni.

Types of NESA Scholarships

NESA offers several scholarship programs, including:

Lawrence S. and Mabel Cooke Scholarships: These are the largest scholarships awarded by NESA. One recipient will be selected for a four-year $50,000 Lawrence S. and Mabel Cooke Scholarship (up to $12,500 per year for four years). Four recipients will be selected for a four-year $30,000 Lawrence S. and Mabel Cooke Scholarship (up to $7,500 per year for four years). One recipient will be selected from each CST for a one-year $10,000 Lawrence S. and Mabel Cooke Scholarship (14 scholarships total).
Hansen & Mary Hall Scholarships: One recipient will be selected from each CST for a one-year $7,000 Hansen & Mary Hall Scholarship (14 scholarships total).
National Eagle Scout Association Scholarship Endowment: One recipient will be selected from each CST for a one-year $6,000 National Eagle Scout Association Scholarship Endowment (14 scholarships total).
Lester S. McElwain Scholarships: One recipient will be selected from each CST for a one-year $6,000 Lester S.
Robert and Rebecca Palmer Scholarships

Funding for these scholarships is provided by endowments from the National Eagle Scout Association, Lawrence S. and Mabel Cooke, Hansen & Mary Hall, the Lester S. McElwain, and the Robert and Rebecca Palmer. Scholarships are awarded to Eagle Scouts who have shown active participation in school, Scouting activities, and community service, and who demonstrate they understand the fundamentals of service to community, service to Scouting and their character.

NESA Scholarship Eligibility and Requirements

To be eligible for NESA scholarships, applicants must:

Be an active member of the National Eagle Scout Association for each award period.
Be enrolled in an accredited educational institution as a full-time student (at least 12 credit hours) in a program leading to an academic degree (including associate degrees) or a skilled trade program.
Cooke four-year scholarship awardees must be enrolled in an accredited four-year college or university as a full-time student (at least 12 credit hours) in a program leading to a bachelor's degree.

All funds will be paid directly to the awardee’s selected college/university or skilled trade program for tuition, room, board, and books during the life of the scholarship, which is a maximum of four years. Awardee will register, maintain, and provide NESA with proof of full-time status at their selected college/university or skilled trade program during the life of the scholarship. NESA will submit payment to the selected college/university or skilled trade program upon receipt of a school/program course schedule verifying the awardee’s full-time status. For Cooke four-year awardees NESA will submit payment to the selected college/university upon receipt of a course schedule and unofficial transcript verifying the awardee’s full-time status. Scholarship awards will be paid in installments or as a one-time payment at the discretion of NESA. Awardee must use scholarship in the academic year awarded. You must be a NESA member to apply, but you will NOT need any Scouting America membership numbers or ID’s to update the application.

The American Legion Eagle Scout of the Year Scholarship

The American Legion is offering the Eagle Scout of the Year Scholarship to exceptional young individuals who have demonstrated practical citizenship in their community, school, and church. The American Legion Department of Tennessee is seeking the best and brightest Eagle Scouts for their Eagle Scout of The Year scholarship.

Eligibility and Requirements

To be eligible, applicants must be registered active members of a Boy Scouts of America unit and have received the Eagle Scout Award, as well as a Scouts BSA or Venturer Religious Emblem. If you meet these requirements and are enrolled in high school, we encourage you to apply! Bear in mind that the nomination window is from November 1st to March 1st of each year. Nominees must be active members of a Boy Scout Troop, Varsity Scout Team, or Venturing Crew Chartered to an American Legion Post, Auxiliary Unit or Sons of The American Legion Squadron. Applicants must be at least 15 years old to qualify. However, Eagle Scouts up to 18 years old still qualify as long as they're still enrolled in high school.

Nomination Process and Award Amounts

The American Legion Eagle Scout of the Year nomination window is from November 1st to March 1st, annually. Nomination packets must be received by each applicant's respective American Legion Department (state) no later than March 1st. Then each respective American Legion Department (state) Selection Committee will determine the Eagle Scout judged to be the best in their Department (state). The Department (state) will then send that packet, along with a list of the members serving on that Selection Committee, to The American Legion National Headquarters no later than April 1st. The American Legion Eagle Scout of the Year will receive a $10,000 scholarship. Three (3) runner-up scholarship awards will be granted in the amount of $2,500 each. The scholarship recipients will be eligible to receive their scholarship upon enrollment to an accredited trade school, college, or university within the United States. Disbursement of the scholarship funds through an online request will be made available jointly to the student and the school. “The Eagle Scout who best meets the qualifications outlined in the nomination application will be selected as the American Legion Eagle Scout of the Year by the National Americanism Commission.

National Catholic Committee on Scouting (NCCS) Scholarships

The National Catholic Committee on Scouting’s motto is “Service to Church. Community. School. Are you a Catholic high school senior who is actively involved with a Scout Troop, Venturing Crew, or Sea Scout Ship? Further, have you earned the Eagle Scout, Summit Award, or Quartermaster Award and the Ad Altare Dei, Pope Pius XII, or Light is Life (Eastern Rite) Religious Emblem? If so, you may be eligible for some of the NCCS (National Catholic Committee on Scouting) Scholarships! There are seven types of scholarships available, offering between $2,000 and $5,000 each to winning applicants. If you do fit the criteria for any of the scholarships, we encourage you to apply by filling out the NCCS Scholarship Application no later than March 1st. Upon doing so, you will be considered for all of their scholarship opportunities. To honor Mr. Emmett J. Doerr, who was a dedicated Catholic Scouter and a very active member of the National Catholic Committee on Scouting® (NCCS). He was the first recipient of the Brother Barnabas Founders Award. His other honors include the Silver Antelope, Silver Beaver and the St. George medals.

Chester M. Vernon Memorial Eagle Scout Scholarship: Provides financial assistance for college to male Jewish Boy Scouts who demonstrate financial need. Applicant must be currently registered and active in Boy Scouting, Varsity Scouting, or Venturing. He must have earned the Eagle Scout Award; have earned the Ner Tamid or Etz Chaim religious emblem; be active in a synagogue; and have demonstrated practical citizenship in the synagogue, school, Scouting unit, and community.
Frank L. Weil Memorial Eagle Scout Scholarship: Provides financial assistance for college to male Jewish Boy Scouts. Applicant must be currently registered and active in Boy Scouting, Varsity Scouting, or Venturing.
George N. Boulukos EOCS Scholarship: Is open to graduating high school seniors who are registered, active members of an EOCS (Eastern Orthodox Committee on Scouting)-recognized scouting program: Scouting America (Scouts BSA, Exploring, Venturing, Sea Scouts), Girl Scouts of the USA, Trail Life USA, American Heritage Girls, or Camp Fire. Applicants must also (1) have earned the Eagle Scout Award, the Gold Award, or the highest award of another EOCS-recognized scouting program, (2) be communicant members of an Eastern Orthodox Christian Church recognized by the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of the USA, and (3) have earned the EOCS Alpha Omega Religious Award. To apply, interested students must submit one letter of recommendation from each of the following: their priest, guidance counselor, scouting leader, and a community leader. To encourage our Orthodox Christian Scouts in their future studies, the Eastern Orthodox Committee on Scouting offers up to two $1000 scholarships each year. The selection process is based on applicants’ involvement and achievements in their church, school, Scouting, and community.
Dennis T. Collins/Thomas D Scholarship: In addition to being members of Paso Robles Troop 60, applicants for this scholarship must be college-bound high school seniors or current undergraduates with a minimum 3.0 GPA.
Freshman Designation-Based: Eagle Scout/Gold Award Scholarship: Is open to students entering the University of Southern Mississippi as freshmen. Awarded to selected full-time students who have earned the rank of Eagle (Scouting America), Summit Award (Venturing), or Quartermaster Award (Sea Scouts). Incoming Freshmen who have received one of these awards may receive $1,000 per year. Proof of Scouting award is required. Recipients must live on-campus and maintain a 3.0 GPA.
Lawrence Strader Boy Scouts of America Scholarship: The scholarship is open to low-income BSA (Boy Scouts of America) members from select Tennessee counties who will be enrolling full-time in a four-year university. Through this scholarship, the East Tennessee Foundation hopes to support low-income members of the Boy Scouts of America, Great Smoky Mountain Council. Applicants must also hold a minimum 2.5 GPA, have earned the rank of Eagle Scout, Summit, or Quartermaster, and live in an eligible Tennesee county (see full list below) to be eligible for the scholarship. Recipients are awarded $9,000 per year for up to four years of their degree program.
VFW Scout of the Year Scholarship: This scholarship honors high-achieving Scouts who demonstrate standout citizenship, patriotism, and love for their country. The scholarship is funded by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), an organization that has been in partnership with the Boy Scouts of America since 1915. Mervyn Sluizer Jr. Scholarship Fund: The Mervin Sluizer, Jr. Scholarship Fund is open to high school senior who are current members of Scouting America and are active in the Greater Philadelphia area. Scouts who are registered, active members of a Boy Scout Troop, Venturing Crew, or a Sea Scout Ship who have received the Eagle Scout Award, Venturing Summit Award or Sea Scout Quartermaster Award. Scouts must be 15 years of age and have demonstrated practical citizenship in school, scouting and the community. Scouts must be enrolled in high school at the time of selection.
Charles L Scholarship: Open to Northern Tier Seasonal Staff for post-secondary educational funding assistance of a total of up to $3,000, paid over a three-year period. Open to youth participants attending Northern Tier.

University-Specific Scholarships

For example, Millsaps College offers a scholarship of $15,000 per year to students who achieved either Eagle Scout or a Gold Award in the Girl Scouts. Hampden-Sydney College embraces the values also shared by Scouting.
