Alamo Colleges District: A Comprehensive Overview

The Alamo Colleges District (ACD) is a network of five community colleges serving the Bexar County community and the Greater San Antonio metropolitan area. These colleges-Northeast Lakeview College, Northwest Vista College, Palo Alto College, St. Philip's College, and San Antonio College-offer accessible and affordable education, associate degrees, certificates, and licensures in occupational programs, as well as arts and science courses that transfer to four-year colleges and universities.

Campuses and Locations

The five colleges within the Alamo Colleges District are strategically located to serve the diverse communities within the Greater San Antonio area.

San Antonio College (SAC): Established in 1925, San Antonio College is the oldest in the district.
St. Philip's College: Founded in 1898, St. Philip's College has a long history of serving the community.
Palo Alto College (PAC): Established in 1985.
Northeast Lakeview College (NLC): The newest college in the district, established in 2007, is located in Universal City. Northeast Lakeview College is a modern facility located in a picturesque setting northeast of the city.
Northwest Vista College (NVC): Established in 1995, Northwest Vista College enjoys a stunning lakeside location on the west side of San Antonio. For the first time, Northwest Vista College hosted fall commencement ceremonies in December.

All of the colleges are within San Antonio city limits except Northeast Lakeview, which is within the town limits of Universal City and Live Oak, just to the northeast of the City of San Antonio. The Alamo Colleges District Main Office is located at 2222 N. Alamo St.

Academic Programs and Transfer Opportunities

The Alamo Colleges offer a vast array of programs and two-year degrees. These programs are designed to prepare students for jobs or further academic study. The colleges offer associate degrees, certificates, and licensures in occupational programs that prepare students for jobs, as well as arts and science courses that transfer to four-year colleges and universities and lead to AA and AS degrees.

After completing an associate’s degree, academic credits are transferable to four-year universities. The Alamo Colleges District is partnered with the Transfer Scholars Network. Transfer Advising Guides are another benefit of choosing to start at the Alamo Colleges. Currently, the Alamo Colleges have a transfer agreement with six colleges and 21 universities in Texas.

All five institutions place a focus on small class sizes, with an average of 22 students, to allow for a higher level of personal interaction and direction between students and faculty. San Antonio College offers a rigorous English as a Second Language program to improve essential English skills.

The Alamo Colleges District plays a vital role in the Alamo region’s economy. As the Alamo region’s two community college districts work to address local skills gaps and meet the specific needs of area employers, they support more than 7,000 jobs and add more than $816 million dollars in economic output annually.

The Alamo economic region - 19 counties covering about 18,000 square miles in south central Texas - has two community college districts: Alamo Colleges District and Victoria College. The Alamo region’s two community college districts reported revenues of more than $531.9 million in fiscal 2018, which produced an additional $284.3 million in indirect and induced economic activity for a total impact of $816.2 million annually. More than 7,000 jobs are supported by the region’s community college spending.

Financial Information

The Alamo Colleges District had a budget of $503 million for the 2023 academic year. Community colleges deliver a particularly good return on investments of time and tuition. The Alamo Colleges Foundation offers scholarships for admitted students. Once admitted to one of the Alamo Colleges, students can submit one general application to be considered for all eligible scholarships. The Texas Public Education Grant (TPEG) is another option available for international students. The Texas Public Education Grant is designed to provide assistance to those in financial need, with preference given to those studying for their first undergraduate or postgraduate degree.

The Alamo Colleges nine-member board of trustees are elected locally to six-year terms by Bexar County voters.

Recent capital improvement programs have allowed us to create some of the best facilities for teaching and learning in the country. There has been a great deal of investment into the facilities at the Alamo Colleges in recent years, and that is continuing to develop. A new USD 1 billion bond was approved which will drive continued investment across the colleges, with an exciting future for many of the programs that already offer such excellent education and success rates.

The Alamo Colleges District includes five independently accredited colleges in its network, namely Northeast Lakeview College, Northwest Vista College, Palo Alto College, St. Philip’s College and San Antonio College.

How to Apply

Part One: Apply for Admission by completing the ApplyTexas application for one of the Alamo colleges: Northwest Vista College, Palo Alto College, St. Students who apply for San Antonio College will be tested using the Michigan English Test (MET), which will determine a students’ understanding of the language and any necessary instruction.
