Ajaypal Singh "Ajay" Banga is a prominent Indian-American business executive, currently serving as the President of the World Bank Group since June 2, 2023. Early Life and Education

Ajay Banga was born on November 10, 1959, in Khadki, Bombay State (now Maharashtra, India). His family has Punjabi Sikh roots in Jalandhar, Punjab. His father, Harbhajan Singh Banga, is a retired lieutenant-general in the Indian Army. He is the younger brother of businessman M. S. Banga.

Banga received his early education at St. Edward's School in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, and the Hyderabad Public School in Begumpet. Early Career at Nestlé and PepsiCo

Ajay Banga began his business career in 1981 as a management trainee with Nestlé India. He spent 13 years with the company, working in various roles spanning sales, marketing, and general management.

From 1994 to 1996, Banga served as Director for Marketing and Business Development at PepsiCo Restaurants International India. He played a role in launching international fast-food chains like Pizza Hut and KFC in the Indian market.

In 1996, Banga joined Citigroup, where he held various senior management positions over the next 13 years. His initial training involved working as a debt collector. From 2000 to 2002, he led CitiFinancial and the U.S. Consumer Assets Division. Between 2005 and 2008, he served as the chief executive of Citi's International Global Consumer Group, responsible for all credit card and consumer banking operations outside North America. In 2008, Banga became the chief executive of Citigroup Asia Pacific, overseeing the bank's operations across the region from New York and Hong Kong, and led a significant reorganization of Citigroup’s operations in Asia that year.

Leadership at Mastercard

Ajay Banga joined Mastercard in 2009 as President and Chief Operating Officer (COO). In April 2010, Mastercard announced that Banga would succeed Robert W. Selander as President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), effective July 1, 2010. He also became a member of the company's board of directors.

During his tenure as CEO, Banga oversaw significant growth and transformation at Mastercard. The company's revenue increased sixfold, and its market value grew from under $30 billion to over $360 billion. He championed financial inclusion as a core part of Mastercard's strategy. On January 1, 2022, Banga became Vice Chairman at General Atlantic. He was named non-executive chairman of Exor, an investment company controlled by the Agnelli family, on May 24, 2022. However, he later resigned from this position.

Banga has also been involved in various advisory and leadership roles in public and private sector organizations. He has served as a member of the Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations since 2015. He is a member of the Board of Directors of Dow Chemical Company and the Board of Governors of the American Red Cross. He also served as Chairman of the Financial Services Roundtable and Co-Chair of the American India Foundation. He is a member of the Council of Foreign Relations.

In February 2015, President Barack Obama appointed Banga to the President's Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations. Following the 2020 elections, Banga served as an advisor to Vice President Kamala Harris, chairing the Partnership for Central America.

World Bank Presidency

On February 23, 2023, President Joe Biden nominated Ajay Banga to lead the World Bank. On May 3, 2023, the World Bank confirmed Banga as its fourteenth president. He began his five-year term on June 2, 2023.

As President of the World Bank Group, Banga has articulated a new vision and mission for the institution: to create a world free of poverty on a livable planet. He has initiated reforms to enhance lending capacity, streamline operations, and deliver practical, scalable, and impactful development solutions. Ajay Banga has received several accolades for his leadership and contributions. In 2016, the Government of India honored him with the Padma Shri, a high civilian award. In 2023, he was recognized as an honoree of the Great Immigrants Awards by the Carnegie Corporation of New York. Time Magazine included him in its "Time100 Climate" list in 2023. He was also awarded the Distinguished Friends of Singapore Public Service Star in 2021, the Ellis Island Medal of Honor in 2019, and the Business Council for International Understanding’s Global Leadership Award.
