The guidance below was put together by the Nursing Career Pathways Workgroup to assist students with understanding the financial aid process and locating scholarship and loan repayment opportunities.

Many nurses take out student loans to pay for a nursing degree. In fact, undergraduate nursing students graduate with an average of $23,000-$29,000 in student debt, while those with a master of science in nursing owe $49,000 on average, according to a report from NerdWallet. Nursing students can limit their borrowing by maximizing their scholarships and grants. Professional associations, nursing schools, and private organizations offer scholarships for nurses. Important Note: Students who receive awards from state-funded programs with service obligations may qualify for other financial incentive programs to practice. In some cases, the service obligations can be met concurrently. However, federally law prohibits concurrent service obligations with most state loan repayment programs, such as the National Health Service Corps loan repayment program. Be sure to check with the programs if you are applying for multiple programs.Some programs also require that private and public loans cannot be consolidated.
