A Story of Necessity and Determination
The story of ABC Learn with Me is one of personal motivation and a desire to make a difference. A decade ago, Robin, the founder, faced a challenge when her eldest son was stationed in Germany. She struggled to find affordable child care in Connecticut for her grandson. Child care centers charged a flat rate, regardless of how many hours the child was actually cared for. Despite having no background in education or child care, Robin saw an opportunity to create a more accessible and supportive childcare option.
Driven by her experience as a mother and grandmother, she embarked on the journey of starting her own child care center. Today, ABC Learn with Me is a 6,000 square foot facility that offers care for babies as young as six weeks old.
Navigating the Pandemic: Resilience and Community Support
At the start of 2020, ABC Learn with Me was thriving, with around 100 children enrolled. However, the COVID-19 pandemic brought unprecedented challenges. "Pretty much overnight, we went from having a full facility to not knowing if we would be able to keep our doors open," Robin admitted. Parents initially helped by continuing to pay dues, but the situation became unsustainable.

Robin was forced to let go of all 20 employees. It was at this critical juncture that she learned about the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) from Citizens Relationship Manager Jill Wilson-Hromadka. Robin recognized the importance of retaining her staff and supporting essential worker parents: "My employees were too good to lose, and our parents, especially those who are essential workers, needed us to be open."
Jill played a crucial role in guiding Robin through the PPP process, reminding her that she was qualified to receive a loan. With the first round of PPP funding in Spring 2020, Robin immediately prioritized payroll, rehiring her entire staff of 20, even though only 20 children were attending the center.
The support extended beyond financial assistance. Parents ensured the child care center had safety products and paper goods when supplies were scarce. One parent even offered unbeatable rates on deep cleaning services for the facility. "We have parents who can barely afford to pay us right now, but we make sure we offer them the support they need to get by," Robin explained. "That’s what we do here." Robin has been overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and understanding she has experienced through the center during the pandemic. Right now, the center only allows one parent at a time for drop off and pick up, so there is a line that forms outside of the building.
Robin's commitment to her community is evident in her decision to remain open despite the financial strain. She even used her personal money to keep the lights on for the children of front-line workers. This dedication has not gone unnoticed, with Jill describing Robin as "one of the most humble people I know."
Currently, Robin is working with Citizens to secure her second PPP loan. Despite the uncertainties, she remains optimistic about the future.
