The program is administered by Scholarship America®, a renowned organization specializing in managing scholarships and educational support programs for various entities.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for the AbbVie Immunology Scholarship, applicants must meet specific criteria:

  • Diagnosis: Applicants must be diagnosed by a healthcare professional with one of the following chronic inflammatory diseases: atopic dermatitis (AD), ankylosing spondylitis (AS), Crohn's disease (CD), hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), psoriasis (Ps), psoriatic arthritis (PsA), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), ulcerative colitis (UC), or uveitis (UV).

Selection Criteria

Scholarship America will review applications and select finalists. All finalists will be evaluated by a panel of judges selected by AbbVie. The selection process is based on several factors:

  • Academic Excellence: A strong academic record is a primary consideration. Applicants must submit a current, complete transcript of grades. Grade reports are not accepted. SAT or ACT test scores are not required, but if providing them and the scores are not on the high school transcript, an official copy of those test scores will need to be uploaded separately.
  • Community Involvement: Applicants should demonstrate active participation and leadership in their communities.
  • Role Model Potential: Applicants should exhibit the ability to serve as a positive role model in the immunology community. The judges will aspire for a representative sample across therapeutic areas, depending on submissions.

To apply for the AbbVie Immunology Scholarship, applicants must submit the following:

  1. Online Application: A completed online application form.

LaWanda McCraney, a 2024-2025 scholarship recipient and Ph.D. candidate at Adler University, stated, "Receiving the AbbVie Immunology Scholarship is more than just financial support; it is a profound validation of my dedication to achieving my personal and professional goals despite the daily battle with an inflammatory disease."

Additional Considerations for Applicants

While the application process focuses on academic excellence, community involvement, and the ability to serve as a role model, applicants may also consider reflecting on their personal experiences with their chronic inflammatory disease.

The application may include optional short answer questions. While these short answers are not required and will not affect an applicant's chance of being selected, they provide an opportunity to share their perspective and experiences. Some potential topics to consider include:

  • Challenges faced daily and how their perspective helps manage them.
  • The composition and value of their support system within their community.
  • How they plan to use their education to make a positive impact on the world.
  • The personal meaning and impact of receiving the scholarship.
  • How their chronic inflammatory disease has influenced their educational journey.

These reflections can help applicants showcase their resilience, determination, and unique perspectives, further strengthening their application.
