Yandere Simulator: Delving into the World of Obsessive Love and High School Life
Yandere Simulator is a stealth game centered around a high school girl who is obsessively in love with a student, and the player must eliminate anyone who shows interest in them. This article delves into the core mechanics, characters, and unique aspects of this intriguing game.
What is "Yandere"?
The term "yandere" describes a character, typically female, who is so deeply in love with someone that they are willing to go to extreme lengths, including threatening, harming, or even killing anyone they perceive as a rival for their love interest's affection.
Gameplay Mechanics: Stealth and Elimination
The gameplay of Yandere Simulator draws parallels to the Hitman series. Players find themselves in a large, open environment populated with numerous non-player characters (NPCs). The primary objective is to identify and eliminate specific targets - those who pose a threat to the protagonist's romantic aspirations.
Players have multiple options for eliminating rivals:
- Stealth: Eliminating the target discreetly, without witnesses, is a viable approach.
- Accidents: Staging an accident that appears to be unintentional can effectively remove a rival without direct implication.
- Direct Confrontation: Players can choose to confront and eliminate anyone who stands in their way through direct combat.
- Social Sabotage: Manipulating social dynamics to ruin a rival's reputation, leading to expulsion or other forms of social isolation, is another option. Framing a rival for crimes is also another way to eliminate them.
It's crucial to avoid being witnessed by the love interest while committing violent acts. If the "Senpai" witnesses the protagonist's actions, they may become disgusted and reject the protagonist, leading to a game over.

Unique Features: High School Setting and Yandere Protagonist
Yandere Simulator incorporates several unique features stemming from its high school setting and the protagonist's yandere nature:
- Persistent Reputation: The protagonist's actions impact their reputation among students. Incriminating behavior leads to gossip and suspicion, while a positive reputation can earn trust and favors.
- Sanity Level: Violent actions decrease the protagonist's sanity, leading to visible signs of instability. Low sanity can make the protagonist appear insane, potentially ruining their chances with Senpai.
- Sanity-Determined Kill Animations: The protagonist's sanity level influences the style of kill animations. High sanity results in quick, efficient, and silent kills, while low sanity leads to sloppy, messy, and brutal attacks.
- Yandere Vision: A dedicated button activates "Yandere Vision," highlighting important characters and objects, even through walls. This mode also allows for "Yandere" actions like creepy laughter.
Game Development Details
Yandere Simulator is being developed using the Unity game engine. The developer intends to release the game on Steam once it reaches a more polished state.
Customization and Modding
The game may allow players to change the gender of their Senpai, but this would require a lot of extra animations/models/voice acting. The developer would also like to allow players to choose the protagonist's gender, but it would require a lot of additional animations/models/voice acting. There have already been several mods for Yandere Simulator. However, the developer cannot guarantee that they will be able to provide an official "modding API" for the game.
Voice Acting and Translation
A number of voice actors have volunteered to provide voices for some of the game's most significant characters. However, it is not guaranteed that every individual character will have a unique voice. The developer is grateful for translation assistance, but would not like to ask anyone for a translation until after the game's English script has been 100% finalized.
Game Title and Multiplayer
The name "Yandere Simulator" was only meant to be a placeholder title. The developer can think of several very compelling reasons to change the game's name to something that sounds more serious. However, at this point in time, the name "Yandere Simulator" is recognized by millions of people, so it might be a very foolish decision to change the game's name. The game's name will probably not change. The developer has zero experience programming anything related to online multiplayer.

Characters
The protagonist is named Ayano Aishi, and the boy she is in love with is named Taro Yamada. If Senpai is a male, his name is Taro Yamada, and if she is a female, her name is Taeko Yamada.
Endings and Game Length
At the end of the game, Ayano will confess her love to Taro underneath the legendary cherry tree behind the school. The exact nature of the confession - and the outcome of the confession - will depend on the decisions that the player made throughout the game. The game will take place over a period of 10 weeks. Each week, a new "rival" will appear and get a crush on Senpai. The player will have one week to eliminate her. Yandere-chan will not confess her love to Senpai until all rivals have been eliminated.
Interactions with Senpai and Weapons
Currently, it is possible to leave anonymous letters and anonymous gifts on Senpai's desks. The developer is only planning on including weapons that a student could reasonably find in a school setting. The post-highschool academy in Yandere Simulator will have a wide variety of clubs, so there should be a lot of potential to find interesting weapons. There will probably not be any projectile weapons or guns in the game.
Environments and Platforms
For now, the scope of the game is limited to the school, the protagonist's house, and one street. The developer would be happy to release Yandere Simulator on as many different platforms as possible. However, releasing games on console is a lot more difficult than independently releasing games on PC. At this point in time, the developer is only able to release builds for Windows PC. It is extremely unlikely that a mobile device such as an iPhone or Android could ever run the full version of Yandere Simulator.
Development Team and Cost
The developer is currently receiving some very useful programming assistance from some trusted volunteers. Yandere Simulator has been free for 10 years. However, from the very beginning of the game's development, the developer has always made it clear that their intention is to eventually start charging money for the game after adding enough content. A free demo version of the game will always be available. However, the demo will never receive updates or bug fixes; only the paid version of the game will receive updates and bug fixes.

The Developer
The developer is YandereDev! They worked at a video game company for 3 years, then left to become a freelance programmer and pursue their dream of becoming an independent game developer. In the past, they've worked on 5 console games (for Wii, 360, and PS3) and 5 mobile games (for Vita and iPhone).
Sequel and LGBT Students
The developer doesn't think it would be wise to plan a sequel before the original game has been finished. There are already a few lesbian and gay characters in the game. In some cases, you can learn who they are by reading their student profiles. In other cases, you have to deduce their orientation by examining subtle hints and clues.
Student Profiles: A Glimpse into Akademi High
Beyond the core gameplay and mechanics, Yandere Simulator features a diverse cast of students, each with their own unique backstories, personalities, and roles within the school ecosystem. These student profiles add depth and richness to the game's world, providing players with opportunities for social manipulation, alliances, and strategic elimination.
Male Students: A Closer Look
The male students of Akademi High serve various purposes, from advancing side quests to acting as "walking security cameras" that can hinder the protagonist's progress. While they may not directly advance the main story, they contribute to the atmosphere and complexity of the game.
Common Tropes Among Male Students
- Covert Pervert: Some students may be secretly purchasing panty shot photos from Info-chan.
- Dies Wide Open: A morbid detail, but corpses in the game generally have their eyes open.
- Driven to Suicide: A potential outcome if a student's reputation is sufficiently ruined.
- Heroic Bystander: Students may attempt to apprehend the protagonist if they witness a murder.
- Oh, Crap!: A common reaction when witnessing something bad.
- Only Known by Their Nickname: Many students are primarily referred to by their punny nicknames.
- Ordinary High-School Student: Most male students fit this archetype.
- Teacher's Pet: A trait that was originally common to all male students, but has since been diversified.
- Theme Naming: Various groups of students share thematic naming conventions, such as the Rainbow Boys or the Occult Club boys.
- Wide Eyes and Shrunken Irises: An expression of fear.
Clubless Male Students
These students are not affiliated with any particular club, often leading to unique personalities and storylines.
- Kyuji Konagawa: A student who was once popular but has become withdrawn due to his difficulty talking to girls. He can be paired with Osana through the Matchmaking elimination method.
- Otohiko Meichi: A clumsy and sickly student who is often late to school and bullied for his feminine appearance.
- Hazu Kashibuchi: A timid student who is exceptionally talented at sewing and prefers to avoid social interactions.
- Toga Tabara: A student who is struggling to decide what to do after graduating and can often be seen wandering the school aimlessly.
Martial Arts Club
Members of the Martial Arts Club are known for their heroic persona and willingness to defend others.
- Budo Matsuyama/Budo Masuta: The president of the Martial Arts Club, known for his strength and determination.
- Sho Kunikida/Sho Kunin: A member of the Martial Arts Club who is known for saving a woman from muggers.
- Juku Renbutsu/July Ren: A member of the Martial Arts Club who is more interested in replicating movie martial arts moves than in actual self-defense.
Occult Club
The male members of the Occult Club are often introverted and interested in the paranormal.
- Shin Higaonna/Shin Higaku: The Occult Club's second-in-command, who runs the club in Oka's absence.
Senpai: The Object of Obsession
In Yandere Simulator, "Senpai" is the term used for the object of the protagonist's affection. This character can be either male ("Senpai-kun," Taro Yamada) or female ("Senpai-chan," Taeko Yamada), depending on the player's choice at the beginning of the game.
Throughout the school year, ten different rivals will emerge, each vying for Senpai's attention. A school myth states that a confession of love under the cherry tree behind the school on a Friday will lead to eternal love. Each rival plans to confess at 6:00 PM on Friday, giving the player a week to eliminate them.
