Navigating Yale: A Guide to the University Shuttle System and Transportation Options

The Yale Shuttle system offers a comprehensive and free transportation solution for Yale students, staff, and faculty. Designed for safety and reliability, the system includes fixed route shuttles, door-to-door services, on-demand Safe Ride vans, and specialized transportation for individuals with disabilities. In addition to the shuttle, Yale provides information to navigate travel to and from campus.

Yale Shuttle System: Your Free Ride Around Campus

The Yale Shuttle system is designed to provide a safe and reliable mode of transportation for all Yale students, staff and faculty.

Fixed Route Shuttles: Scheduled and Convenient

Fixed Route shuttles operate on weekdays, running from early morning until late at night. These shuttles follow specific routes with designated stops, making them ideal for traveling between common campus locations.

Important Note: Shuttle service may be altered throughout Yale’s COVID-19 reopening phases.

  • Weekday Operation: Fixed lines shuttles run early morning to late night every weekday (specific times listed on the following pages).
  • Fixed Stops: Shuttles stop at a number of fixed stops.
  • Signaling: To board, wait at a designated stop and signal the driver as the shuttle approaches.
  • Exiting: To disembark, pull the yellow cord a few moments before reaching your stop.
  • Real-Time Tracking: Use the DoubleMap app to view shuttle lines, stop locations, and the current positions of the shuttles.
  • West Campus Lines: The weekday Green line (7:00 AM-8:20PM) and Purple line (7:00 AM-11:30 PM) travel to West Campus from the Science Hill and Medical School campuses, respectively. There are normally three shuttles for each line, staggered at 20 minute departure intervals.
  • Schedule Variations: At night, on weekends, and during adverse weather conditions, the routes and times of operation may change.

Door-to-Door Service: Customized Transportation

For more personalized transportation, Yale offers door-to-door shuttle services during specific hours.

  • Evening Service: Starting at 6:00 PM, the Blue, Orange, and Yellow Lines provide door-to-door service between any two points within the boundary zone.
  • On-Request Drop-offs: If you board at a normal shuttle stop, you can request to be dropped off at any destination within the shuttle boundaries. The shuttle driver will deviate from the normal route as necessary to make requested stops.
  • Off-Route Pick-ups: You can also request an off-route pick-up by calling the shuttle dispatcher at (203) 432-6330 and providing your location.
  • Wall Street/Law School Shuttle: The Wall Street Shuttle/Law School Shuttle (6:00 PM-12:45 AM) leaves from the Law School (127 Wall Street) on the hour and at half past the hour. The shuttle will drive you to any location within the boundary zone, first north of Wall Street, then south. At 15 and 45 minutes past, shuttles will leave to take you to any location within the boundary zone south of Wall Street first, then north.
  • Weekend Blue Line: The weekend Blue Line starts at 8:00 AM and follows the weekday Blue Line route with three exceptions. It travels 1) south down Orange Street (instead of Whitney Ave), 2) west to Stop & Shop on Whalley Avenue for grocery shopping, and 3) to Union Station.

Safe Ride: On-Demand Safety Transportation

The Safe Ride program offers an extra layer of security with on-demand van service during evening and overnight hours.

  • Hours: From 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM.
  • Requesting a Ride: You may use the TapRide app or call (203) 432-WALK (9255) to request a Safe Ride van.
  • Service Area: The driver will take you to and from any location within the boundary zone limits of the shuttle routes.
  • Tracking: You can track the arrival of your car on the TapRide app.
  • Wait Time: Once the van arrives it will only wait 3 minutes for you before leaving for its next passenger.
  • Cancellations: If you decide not to travel, please do not forget to cancel your ride.

Special Services: Accessible Transportation

Yale provides Special Services transportation vans for students with temporary or permanent physical disabilities.

  • Availability: The service runs 24 hours a day Monday through Friday and on Saturday and Sunday from 6:00 PM to 7:30 AM.
  • Service Type: Passengers are picked up upon request and transported within the boundaries.

Airports Near Yale University

Airport Shuttles

If you plan to arrive at John F. Kennedy International (JFK), LaGuardia (LGA), Newark Liberty (EWR) or Bradley International (BDL), the easiest transportation to the Yale University campus is via GO Airport Shuttle.

Other Transportation Options

  • Buses: From New Haven's Union Station, bus connections are available around the region. There is no shuttle service on Memorial Day in May, Juneteenth, or Independence Day, July 4. A Yale ID is required for this free transportation.
  • Taxis: Taxis meet all trains and buses at Union Station in New Haven. Include a tip for taxi drivers of about 15% of the total fare; add an extra $1 to $2 for help with luggage. Uber and Lyft are also widely available in New Haven.
  • Train: Amtrak offers daily service to New Haven Union Station from Boston and to Washington, D.C. via Penn Station in New York, and also services Newark airport. Metro-North Railroad offers frequent service from Grand Central Station in New York City to New Haven.

Important Travel Considerations

  • Please allow plenty of time for unexpected traffic delays, airport check-in, security and COVID procedures. Estimated times are exactly that. Traffic is especially unpredictable getting into the airports and is beyond our control.
  • Reservations are required for all travel to the airports from Yale University and the surrounding area. The first Shared Service of the day starts in New Haven around 3:30am and is estimated into La Guardia at approximately 5:45am, and JFK at approximately 6:15am. When available the last Shared Service usually departs from New Haven approximately 4:45pm. When booking your reservation you will be provided an estimated pickup time. Please allow us up to 15 minutes after the estimated time to allow for other pickups in the area and possible unanticipated traffic delays.

Transportation During Special Events

  • The Yale Shuttle will be available to transport students, families, and friends around campus during Commencement weekend.
  • Guests of Davenport and Pierson Colleges, as well as those from the Schools of Architecture and Art, may wish to use the Howe Street garage throughout Commencement weekend. From Chapel Street, turn right onto Howe Street. The garage is on the right. Guests of the School of Medicine are advised to use the Temple Street Garage, 40 Temple Street, or the Air Rights Garage, 40 York Street.
  • Shuttles will be parked on Phelps Gate (College Street) after the main university ceremony on Monday to bring guests to some residential colleges and school ceremonies. every day.
  • On the day of Commencement, take the Red Line from Union Station or State Street Station to main campus. Drop-off at College and Chapel Streets is most convenient for Commencement guests going to Old Campus.
