Navigating the Wisconsin Student Portal: A Comprehensive Guide
The Wisconsin Student Portal serves as a central hub for various educational resources and data management tools for Local Educational Agencies (LEAs), educators, and families in Wisconsin. This article provides a comprehensive guide to understanding and utilizing the portal's features effectively.
Introduction to the Wisconsin Student Portal
The Wisconsin Student Portal is designed to streamline data management, provide access to student information, and support educational initiatives within the state. It offers a range of functionalities, from tracking student progress to accessing important resources and training materials.
Accessing the Portal and Setting Up Accounts
Initial Account Setup for Test Administrators and Coordinators
For first-time test administrators (TAs) or District Test Coordinators (DTCs), the Wisconsin Student Portal provides instructions on setting up accounts for the WIDA Secure Portal (required training site) and WIDA AMS (test administration platform).
Locating Login Information
The upper-right corner of the WISEdata Portal menu bar displays a user's login information. The dropdown menu is separated into two sections by a horizontal line, differentiating functions for users. Items above the line are clickable.
Key Features and Functionalities
WISEdata Portal Screens
Like most screens on WISEdata Portal, the Data Quality screen starts with a Filters section across the top.

Filtering and Searching for Information
As information is entered, the table auto-populates matching results based on the input.
Contacts and Acknowledgments
The "Contact" option is now referred to as "Contacts and Acknowledgments."
Carl Perkins District Status
The portal indicates whether an LEA has Carl Perkins District status with a True or False value. “N/A” is displayed if the LEA has not set their status. This value is updated dynamically based on the school year.
All Student Report Card Status
The portal displays the Opt-In or Opt-Out status for the All Student Report Card. The school year is displayed within the top menu bar in a green rectangle that appears on every screen you view. This school year can be changed in the Filters section that appears across the top of most WISEdata Portal screens.
Total Students Calculation
An information icon provides details on how the total number of students is calculated.

Action Column
The Action column contains the word "Details" as a blue hyperlink.
Program Details
Many details about various "Programs" are displayed on this screen. The only filter available on this screen is the school year.
LEA Graduation Plan
Below the program details is the LEA's graduation plan. DPI recommends 23.5 credits (15 minimum) for graduation from a public school.
Favorite Exports
To mark a particular export as a "favorite" for easy access, click the star icon in that export's row.
Data Element Definitions
Each export has a list of definitions for the data elements it contains.

Data Quality Auditing
Exports are a great way to conduct data quality auditing as schools prepare for the two annually occurring data snapshots.
Student Transfers
This screen assists LEAs dealing with student transfers. Students who transfer to a different LEA (i.e., transfer from one school districts to another, or transfer from a public school to a Choice or independent charter school) need to receive the proper exit code.
Vendor Resources
This section contains training materials for LEAs provided by student information system (SIS) vendor tool representatives.
Courses
LEAs can view, filter, and export the entire Courses list from the Courses screen.
Overlapping Enrollments
This screen displays students who have overlapping enrollments (i.e., a student is enrolled in more than one school at a time). You can filter the table by school year and student WISEid. This screen only displays data for school years starting with 2023-24. In the Action column, click the blue Details hyperlink in any student's row. This opens a new browser tab displaying that specific student's detail screen, focusing on the Enrollments header on that screen.
Assessment Roster
This screen supports LEAs monitoring the diagnostic reading assessments required by Act 20.
FAPE Student Details
This screen makes transparent for which resident students your district is FAPE accountable, even if they attend school in a different district.
Understanding WIDA ACCESS
WIDA offers a handout for parents and families that explains ACCESS and what it means for their student's academic progress. The handout is titled "What Is WIDA ACCESS?". ACCESS is not a test students should study for; instead, students should focus on doing their best to demonstrate their language abilities.
College Football Transfer Portal
The transfer portal has become college football's own free agency. The Athletic keeps you up to date on all the news around the transfer portal. The transfer portal has become college football's own free agency. Luke Fickell has reiterated the same philosophy about his transfer portal views during his first two interview opportunities as Wisconsin’s new coach: He’d prefer to recruit and develop players but understands that in the modern era of college football, plugging gaps at positions of need will be vital every offseason. This offseason, in particular, figures to feature as much movement as Wisconsin’s roster has experienced in some time. It will be up to Fickell and the coaching staff he hires to determine how best to tackle that challenge. But it seems clear the transfer portal, which opened Monday, will require a significant chunk of Fickell’s attention.
Fickell said, “I always worry about if you add too many people that don’t have three, four, five years to build the relationships here that you can really kind of mess up some of the cultures and things that have been built. That’s what I think they’ve done a really good job of here."
Virginia Tech's Needs
A senior day ceremony can sometimes be a mixed bag for hinting at what a player plans to do going forward, particularly when it takes place before the final game of the season, when emotions are high and decisions aren’t necessarily finalized. But with Virginia Tech recognizing its football seniors at Sunday’s men’s basketball game, a little less than two weeks after the Hokies’ season came to an abrupt end with the UVa cancellation, you could read a little more into who participated. So it wasn’t quite out of left field when both receiver Kaleb Smith and Armani Chatman entered the transfer portal Monday. Both had been recognized in Cassell Coliseum on Sunday, putting a capper on their Hokies’ careers. They were part of an expected rush of players into the portal now that the FBS transfer window is open.
USC's Biggest Needs
A year ago, Lincoln Riley stood inside Heritage Hall, spoke about the status of his roster and sent out the notice to anyone who was watching or listening: “I would say we’re open for business on all accounts.” What followed was one of the most audacious roster overhauls in the history of the sport, with 19 FBS transfers in, 21 transfers out and plenty of other departures. USC used the transfer portal to transform a four-win team into an 11-win squad that was one win away from the College Football Playoff this season. During the season, Riley insisted this wasn’t going to be a one-year fix. Friday night’s 47-24 loss to Utah in the Pac-12 title game proved that. After the game, Riley said all parts of the roster will need to take a step forward. With the transfer portal officially opening Monday, the path is clear for USC to try to fill some needs and plug some holes on its roster.
Transfer Portal Activity
The busiest week in the history of the transfer portal began on Dec. 5. Thankfully, we did not see a lot of players appearing in the portal right after midnight. Let’s not make that a tradition in the future. But not everyone waited until the morning. Miami compliance staffer entered five football players into the portal. Buckle up for a frantic 45 days. The newly established transfer window is now officially open. Close to 500 FBS scholarship players have already entered the NCAA transfer portal or have announced their plans to do so on Dec. 5. Nobody will be surprised when that number rapidly surpasses 1,000 by the end of the month. It might even get there by the end of the week. In the 2021-22 academic year, the final total was 1,946 scholarship players - and nearly 3,000 total FBS players - transferring over a 12-month period. This cycle is going to play out differently in a few ways due to some key NCAA rule changes, but those reforms won’t make this offseason any less dramatic.
