Lucie Geist's College Choice: A Chapter of Change and Pride
The transition to college is a significant milestone, not only for the students embarking on a new chapter but also for their families. For Willie Geist, co-host of "Sunday Today," and his wife, Christina, this reality became particularly poignant as they prepared to send their daughter, Lucie Geist, off to Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. The experience was filled with a mixture of emotions, from excitement and pride to a sense of loss and the need to recalibrate family dynamics.
Acknowledging the Emotional Ride
Christina Geist openly shared her feelings about Lucie's impending departure on Instagram. Processing her emotions publicly, as she explained, helped her cope with the major life change. Her reflections resonated with many parents facing similar transitions. "Back home on Monday morning after our first college move-in, I won’t share her dorm room pics (it’s great!). But, I do want to share a big thank you to those who’ve been on this emotional ride," Christina wrote on August 18.
Christina was deeply affected by Lucie's upcoming departure. "Here’s my take on feeling the feelings out loud and in the open leading up to this major life change: It worked!" she wrote. "As we walked away from campus and flew back home, we were proud, we were emotional, we were of course weepy. But, I just can’t call it sadness. I was honestly so surprised at myself. It was - I guess I’d call it - peace."
To help other parents navigate this emotional journey, Christina penned "Before You Fly Away: Life Lessons From Home," a collection of advice for teens and young adults leaving home. One of the book's messages, "Call home. We need to hear your voice," encapsulates the longing and hope that many parents experience during this time.
Recalibrating Family Life
Willie Geist also acknowledged the shift in family dynamics that Lucie's departure would bring. He, Christina, and their 15-year-old son, George, would need to adjust to life as a family of three for most of the time. “We feel like we’ve done the best we can. She’s a great kid, and so we’re thrilled for her,” Willie said at the TODAY Father's Day celebration in June. “But we’re a family of four. Somebody’s taken a tire off the car and you’ve got to figure out how to drive the car on three wheels, you know?”

Peter Alexander offered a lighthearted perspective, suggesting that George might enjoy the increased attention he would receive with Lucie away at college. “I don’t know how he feels about that, but we’re excited about it,” Geist joked of George.
Acknowledging Lucie’s Accomplishments and Readiness
Willie reflected on the whirlwind of graduation week, with its parties and school events. The realization of Lucie's milestone truly hit him during the graduation ceremony. “The graduation week, there are parties and things at school. You’re kind of busy … and then all of the sudden you’re sitting there and you’re looking up at that stage and go, ‘Oh, that’s her! That’s Lucie. That’s my daughter walking across and shaking the hand of the principal and getting the diploma,’” Willie told Jenna.
Despite the bittersweet emotions, Willie and Christina found solace in Lucie's happiness and readiness for this new chapter. "It was sad in the moment when we said goodbye, but because she is so happy, and we realize she is so ready," Willie said to Jenna Bush Hager, "you realize all that you poured into this person for 18 years is now paying off, and she can handle herself, and she's happy and she's good."
Willie also shared advice he had received about college drop-offs: "A mutual friend of ours once told me, 'When you drop them off at college, if they don't look back, you've done it right,'" Geist said. "And so she walked away, but then she just kind of hopped up the stairs and went on to this new chapter, and she's doing great. So it was beautiful."
Lucie's High School Achievements
Lucie Geist's accomplishments extend beyond academics. At St. Luke's School, she served as Student Council President, actively contributing to the school community. Known for her weekly town meeting announcements and presence at school events, Lucie demonstrated strong leadership skills.

Emma Sherter ’25 mentioned that “Lucie is the definition of a leader. She is so incredibly organized and always comes to meetings prepared. She is competent and executes so many fun and exciting student events, and, most importantly, she listens to others and is a team player. she is by far the best leader I’ve worked with.” Similarly, Dr. Bludgus, Head of Upper School and Student Council Advisor, noted that “Lucie is great at taking initiative and following up on things. She is constantly reaching out to students and adults, building consensus, mobilizing our community, and advocating for an even more vibrant school culture here at St."
Lucie's involvement extended to athletics as well. She was a member of the girls’ basketball team and a celebrated senior on the field hockey team. Additionally, as a member of the Relay for Life team, Lucie worked to raise money for cancer research. As part of the Global Scholars program, Lucie researched drug cartels in Mexico and their impact on both Mexico and America.
Lucie stated that her proudest accomplishment was definitely the first Homecoming dance. “Having everyone come together after a day of supporting our sport teams and listening to student performers was really special.” Lucie knew that would need to do something extraordinary for the winter semi-formal. Lucie acknowledged the support of her friends and family in her achievements. “All throughout high school, my friends have always come to support me at my games or clubs or Relay for Life. Building up confidence is important to being a good leader, but having peers be confident in your ability to lead well is key. Fortunately, the Executive Board has no problem trusting Lucie to do what is needed and get tasks done.
Her parents and brother have helped her become the leader. “We’re a very close knit family. We have family dinners every night. My brother and I are also very close. me a lot as a person. They’ve taught me how to be a good listener…which applies to my role as President.”

A New Chapter at Vanderbilt University
As Lucie embarks on her college journey at Vanderbilt University, she carries with her the lessons and experiences gained throughout her high school years. Her parents, while experiencing a mix of emotions, are ultimately proud and confident in her ability to navigate this new chapter.
Trust and Letting Go
Willie Geist also shared his perspective on trusting Lucie's independence. While he and Christina had been using location-tracking software, they decided to discontinue it once she went to college. Geist argued that tracking his daughter’s location would cause more trouble than reassurance.
A Lasting Love Story
Willie and Christina Geist's relationship began in 6th grade and has blossomed over the years. Geist shared the couple’s origin story in an Instagram tribute for his wife’s 50th birthday. “She was 11 when she caught my eye on the first day of Mr. Kaplan’s 6th Grade homeroom class. A gawky boy in Jams and Chuck Taylors can dream… but not this big,” he wrote. Now more than two decades later, the couple share two kids - daughter Lucie, born in 2007, and son George, born in 2009.
