Trinity Rodman: From College Prospect to Soccer Star

Trinity Rodman has rapidly ascended in the world of professional soccer, captivating fans with her exceptional athleticism, skill, and determination. Early Life and Youth Soccer

College Plans and the Jump to Professional Soccer

Rodman attended Corona del Mar High School for one year as a freshman before transferring to JSerra Catholic High School. In December 2019, Trinity Rodman, the top-ranked forward in the class of 2020, signed to play for Washington State University (WSU). She was considered a major recruiting win for the Cougar soccer program. Rodman was a big addition for the Cougs who seemed poised to make another push for a national title.

"Once DJ went to Washington, I told my mom I’m not leaving California, I’m not going to Washington because she was pushing me, she wanted us at the same school,” Trinity told Pac-12 Networks host Ashley Adamson during an August interview with the Rodman siblings.

NWSL Career

2021: Draft and Rookie of the Year

In 2021, the Washington Spirit drafted Rodman as the second overall pick, making her the youngest player ever drafted into the NWSL at age 18. Before being drafted by the Spirit, she had never been to Washington, D.C. She made an immediate impact, scoring a goal within five minutes of her professional debut against the North Carolina Courage in the 2021 NWSL Challenge Cup group stage. She assisted Ashley Sanchez's stoppage-time winner in a 1-0 victory over Racing Louisville. Rodman was the Spirit's second-leading scorer with 6 goals (behind Ashley Hatch) and added 5 assists in 22 games in her rookie regular season.

Also started in all eight Challenge Cup matches, adding four goals in those appearances. Trinity Rodman was also named Finalist for 2022 Ballon d'Or Féminin.

2023: Consistent Performance

Started all 19 matches in which she appeared, playing a total of 1,635 minutes. Finished first on the team with 61 shots and 31 shots on target and tied for second on the team with five goals. Became the youngest player in NWSL history to record 10 assists and 10 goals in a regular season career and the youngest player in Spirit history to make 50 appearances with the team.

2024: Leading Scorer and Injury

Rodman was the Spirit's joint-leading scorer in the 2024 regular season with 8 goals (tied with Ouleymata Sarr) and 6 assists in 23 games. Two of her goals won NWSL Goal of the Week. On September 20, 2024, she left the game against the Kansas City Current in a wheelchair due to back spasms. She returned to action three games later and helped the team finish second in the regular-season standings.

2025: September Player of the Month

Tied Ouleye Sarr for the team lead with eight goals in the regular season, added five assists passing Crystal Dunn and Diana Matheson to become the Spirit’s all-time regular season assists leader. Played 1,770 regular season minutes, averaging 0.66 goal contributions per 90 minutes.

International Career

Rodman has represented the United States on the senior, under-20, and under-17 national teams. She has quickly become a key player for the USWNT.

Early National Team Experience

In 2018, Rodman traveled to Uruguay with the U-17 team as one of the four youngest players of 21 selected for the 2018 U-17 World Cup. She also played with the U-20 team in the Nike Invitational Friendlies.

She studies film of Dennis Rodman positioning himself under the basket, learning to anticipate where the ball will bounce off the rim.

"It’s hunting when you lose the ball," she explains. "A huge part of my game is regains. Tracking back and being the first person to get a foot, a head, a knee, a shin on something."

Her ability to read the game, combined with her speed, agility, and determination, makes her a formidable force on the field. In a game against Wales, she capitalized on an efficient cross from Sophia Smith to break a scoreless tie. Shortly after, she read the flight of a rebound, won possession, and chipped a shot into the top corner of the net.

Overcoming Challenges and Personal Growth

Rodman has faced personal challenges, including a limited relationship with her father. In December 2024, Rodman appeared on the Call Her Daddy podcast and spoke about her relationship with her father, Dennis, saying, "He's not a dad. Maybe by blood, but nothing else." She described him as a controlling parent and said that, as a child, she gave up on living with him because of his party lifestyle.

She has also learned to cope with the pressures of professional soccer by maintaining a close-knit support system, including her mother and brother. She emphasizes the importance of reflecting on both good and bad performances to improve her game. "Being able to reflect and improve on the things you didn’t do so well is really important," she says. "Game to game, if you don’t watch yourself fail, you’re never going to be able to fix those things. You’re going to keep repeating the same mistakes."
