Navigating the Tip-Off: A Comprehensive Guide to the NCAA Basketball Schedule Release
The anticipation surrounding the NCAA Division I men's basketball season is palpable, building from the first practice to the final buzzer. A key moment in this build-up is the unveiling of the schedule, a roadmap that dictates the journey of each team. This article delves into the intricacies surrounding the NCAA basketball schedule release, examining the factors that influence its timing and the key events that punctuate the season.
The Beginning of the Journey: November 3, 2025
The 2025-26 NCAA Division I men's basketball season officially commenced on November 3, 2025, marking the start of a new chapter for teams and fans alike.
Key Dates and Rule Changes Shaping the Season
Several significant events and rule adjustments have shaped the landscape of the 2025-26 season:
Legal Challenges and Eligibility Waivers
On December 18, 2024, a United States District Court issued a preliminary injunction favoring Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia. The court found that NCAA Division I bylaws 12.02.06 and 14.3.3, along with rules in the NCAA Division I 2024-25 Manual, constituted a commercial agreement. The court also found that these bylaws can be replaced by a less restrictive alternative and cause irreparable harm to Pavia. This injunction prevents the NCAA from enforcing its eligibility rules against Pavia and Vanderbilt University.
While not a final determination, the NCAA Division I board of directors approved a temporary blanket waiver for student-athletes who competed at a non-NCAA school for one or more years and would have exhausted their NCAA eligibility following the 2024-25 academic year under existing rules.

Conference Realignment and Rebranding
The conference landscape underwent notable changes:
- On June 26, the Atlantic Sun Conference (ASUN) and the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) announced a strategic alliance. Under this alliance, the WAC will rebrand as the United Athletic Conference (UAC) beginning with the 2026-27 academic year. This rebranding will allow the continuing conference to retain the WAC’s automatic qualification status for NCAA championship events, including basketball. The ASUN will retain its seven current members that do not play scholarship FCS football.
- On July 15, Louisiana Tech announced it would replace Texas State in the Sun Belt Conference from Conference USA.
- On July 21, the American Athletic Conference announced it had dropped the word "Athletic" from its name, becoming the American Conference.
- Six schools joined new conferences for the 2025-26 season.
- Utah Valley University Joined The Big West
- Sacramento State Joins The Big West

Transfer Portal Modifications
On January 14, 2026, at the annual NCAA convention, the Division I Cabinet approved changes to the transfer portal for several sports, including men's and women's basketball. For players on teams undergoing a head coaching change, the portal will open for 15 days, starting 5 days after a new head coach is hired or publicly announced. If 30 days pass without the announcement of a new head coach, the portal will open for those players on the 31st day, as long as it falls after the championship game.
Coaching Changes
Many teams changed coaches during the season and after it ends. Bruce Pearl stepped down from his head coaching role after 11 seasons at Auburn and will remain with the university as an ambassador to the athletic department and serve as special assistant to the athletic director. Barnes stepped away from CSUB after 14 seasons. Kansas State fired Tang after 3 ½ seasons. Lange resigned from St. Joe's after six seasons to take a front-office position with the New York Knicks. Wofford fired Perry, along with associate head coach Tysor Anderson, following an alleged NCAA violation.

Several teams debuted new or renamed arenas:
- St. Thomas left the Schoenecker Arena after 44 seasons for the new Lee and Penny Anderson Arena.
