Founded in 1881, Watkinson School is Hartford's oldest independent school. Serving approximately 220 students from over forty Connecticut towns in grades six through twelve, including The Academy at Watkinson a unique post graduate program. Watkinson's mission is to develop in our students the power to shape their own lives and the world around them. Watkinson's programs are as exceptional as the students we serve. Our Creative Arts, Exhibitions, Global Studies and Learning Skills Programs offer students an broad range of experiences - from guest speakers, to international travel, to memorable reflection, to one-on-one coaching.
Watkinson School is a co-ed, college-preparatory day school for grades 6-12. The school offers a wide range of interscholastic sports in trimester seasons. With a student-to-teacher ratio of 6:1, Watkinson provides personalized attention and support to its students. Diploma programs are available in Creative Arts & Global Studies. More than 30% of students are students of color, reflecting a wide range of academic, personal, and socioeconomic backgrounds. The Academy at Watkinson is a unique PG program for high school graduates who are college-bound but not yet college ready.
Tuition Costs at Watkinson School
Watkinson School's tuition reflects its commitment to providing an outstanding education. Here's a breakdown of the tuition costs for the academic year:
- 6th and 7th Grade: \$43,400.00
- 8th to 12th Grade: \$48,700.00
- Academy: \$35,100.00
- International: \$49,700.00
It's worth noting that tuition includes lunch and certain fees. The Parent Association Dues ($100) are included in the Tuition Fee. A description of this fee: Parent Association Dues (per family - no additional charge for more than one enrolled student): The dues support many school functions such as the David Watkinson Day lunch, Fall Family Dinner, Commencement and Promotion and Sports Night. In addition, grant requests from faculty may be funded to defray the cost of special projects, initiatives and events. Tuition is payable in two installments.

Financial Aid Opportunities
Watkinson School is committed to making its education accessible to outstanding and qualified students, regardless of their financial background. The school offers need-based financial aid to families who are unable to afford the full cost of tuition. Our need-based financial aid aims to provide the opportunity for families who are unable to afford the full cost of tuition to attend. Our average award is approximately $25,000. While we are not able to guarantee financial aid for all students, more than 60% of our students receive some level of financial aid each year. Watkinson financial aid packages are direct grants, with no repayment required.
Watkinson’s financial aid program is designed to make a Watkinson education possible for those who qualify based on demonstrated financial need and the availability of funds.
The Clarity Application
Watkinson School uses the Clarity Application to assess a family's financial need. Parents may use the Clarity application to help determine financial need based on the information shared in the application, including assets, income, expenses, and debts. Clarity offers a user-friendly interface, quick completion (under 30 minutes), mobile optimization, and automatic IRS data transfer to enhance convenience for our families. You can save your progress and return at any time. At the end of the application, there is a $60 fee to submit.
To be eligible for consideration for financial aid at Watkinson School, returning students please submit financial aid applications by January 1st. Please note that our funds run out well before the end of the year!
Tuition Grant for Educators
Watkinson is pleased to offer a tuition grant of up to 25% to full-time educators at colleges and universities.

Application and Enrollment
The application deadline for Watkinson School is Feb. 1 / rolling (applications are due on Feb. 5). A registration fee of which is applied toward tuition is required to hold a place from the time an enrollment agreement is signed, and must be sent with all contracts.
