The story of Walsh Jesuit begins with Cornelius Walsh, a prominent industrialist and devout Catholic from Cuyahoga Falls. Born in 1864, Walsh dedicated his life to his community. Upon his death in 1932, he bequeathed his entire fortune to his wife, Jane. Jane, with the help of her nephew William A. Walsh, decided to donate generously to Catholic institutions. Jane's will included a substantial gift for the establishment of a Catholic high school as a memorial to her husband. William, favoring the Jesuit order, persuaded his aunt to bequeath her property and $100,000 to the Society of Jesus for the construction of an all-boys school.
William presented the proposal to the Chicago Province of the Jesuits. However, the gift remained untouched for many years until it was rediscovered during a transfer of files to the Detroit Province in 1959. William then urged Fr. John McGrail, S.J., the head of the Jesuits' Detroit Province, to reconsider the proposal outlined in Jane's will.
From Humble Beginnings to a Thriving Institution
Originally planned for downtown Cuyahoga Falls near St. Joseph Church, the school's campus eventually found its home on a sprawling 110-acre site (45 ha) near the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Groundbreaking ceremonies took place in 1964, and Walsh Jesuit High School officially opened its doors on September 7, 1965, welcoming 153 freshmen. The school was formally dedicated in May 1966, and the first class graduated in 1969.
In its early years, Walsh Jesuit maintained a traditional dress code, requiring all students to wear neckties, collared shirts, and a specific hairstyle with hair not falling over the ears. Initially established as an all-boys school, similar to other Catholic high schools in Northeast Ohio, Walsh Jesuit transitioned to a co-educational institution in 1991 due to excess capacity and financial challenges.
