Financial Aid Opportunities

Recognizing that a private school education is a significant investment, Vermont Academy is committed to making its programs accessible to talented students from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. Approximately 40% of Vermont Academy students receive financial aid, with the school awarding a total of $3.5 million in financial aid grants annually.

Financial aid grants are determined by a family’s demonstrated need, the merit of the applicant, and many other factors, after thoughtful consideration by the financial aid committee.

Determining Financial Need

To ensure a fair and objective assessment of a family's financial need, Vermont Academy partners with School and Student Service for Financial Aid (SSS), a third-party financial aid assessment organization. SSS analyzes the financial information provided by families to determine the amount they can reasonably contribute to educational expenses. Thornton Academy is proud to use the Clarity application to determine a family’s level of financial need based on the information that families share in the application which includes assets, income, expenses, and debts.

Qualifying for aid is a highly-individualized process. Financial aid at Thornton Academy is determined by a family's ability to meet educational expenses. The application typically takes less than 30 minutes to complete.

Application Timeline

The financial aid application process has specific deadlines for both new and returning students:

New Students:

  • Early Action Applicants:
    • Submit the application for admission by January 1.

  • Vermont Academy will award a similar financial aid award each year, assuming a family’s financial circumstances do not change.
  • It is unlikely that families will receive more financial aid than their original award in future years.
  • Vermont Academy reserves the right to decrease an applicant’s award if a family’s financial situation changes for the better.

Payment Plans

To further assist families with managing tuition costs, Vermont Academy offers several payment plans:

  • Payment in full
    • Requires carrying tuition insurance (TIP) unless opting out.
  • 11 payments (from May through March)
    • Requires carrying tuition insurance (TIP)

Student Life

Since Vermont Academy is primarily a boarding school, the residential life program is an integral part of our students’ lives. Living with peers, as well as teachers, on a daily basis, strengthens the relationships within our community. Whether you live in a small dorm or large, all of them offer a safe and comfortable “home-away-from-home” atmosphere that encourages respect, personal responsibility, cooperation and teamwork.

Experiential Education

Vermont Academy is always in motion. Our students love to explore the world around them, discover new things, and connect what they’ve learned to life beyond the classroom. Our faculty uncover this energy and ambition-their dedication and passion help students strive, soar, and move mountains. Vermont Academy is a place where students invent themselves, discover their dreams, and realize their goals.

Learning Support

At the Center for Learning (CFL), we meet students where they are academically and work closely with them to develop effective skills and strategies for their needs and challenges. Through a partnership with our caring, dedicated, and knowledgeable staff, students develop self-awareness, learning about their strengths and using those to overcome their challenges.
