Vanderbilt University Law School, established in 1874, stands as one of the oldest and most respected law schools in the Southern United States. Vanderbilt Law School opened its doors in the fall of 1874, a year before Vanderbilt University's main campus commenced classes. The first class consisted of seven students and eight professors, with a two-year course of study. William V. Sullivan, the school's first graduate, later represented Mississippi in the United States Senate. William Frierson Cooper, nominated by Jefferson Davis to the Supreme Court of the Confederate States of America, served as the first dean from 1874 to 1875.

Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the law school remained small. By 1941, it had expanded into the old chapel area of Kirkland Hall, but faced limited enrollment during World War II. A $1 million endowment in 1947 revived the school, leading to significant growth through the 1960s. Subsequent renovations and expansions, including a $24 million upgrade, have modernized the facilities.

By 2000, Vanderbilt Law had established a Law & Business Program, new clinical programs, multiple law journals, and an LL.M. program for foreign lawyers. Edward L. Rubin succeeded Syverud as dean in 2005, further developing the Branstetter Litigation & Dispute Resolution Program and increasing the school's reputation in Law and Economics. Academics and Programs

The program typically enrolls no more than 175 students in the J.D. class and around 50 in the LL.M. class each year.

Juris Doctor (J.D.) Program

The Juris Doctor (J.D.) program at Vanderbilt blends a comprehensive legal education with a strong focus on skill development and experiential learning. Law students can tailor their curriculum to their professional interests and enrich their expertise in specialty areas of legal practice. Students can also sharpen their competitive edge by earning a Law and Business Certificate or a J.D./M.S. in Finance in three years.

As a first-year law student, coursework focuses on building fundamental competencies and cultivating a comprehensive understanding of civil procedure, criminal law, contracts, and more. Skill-based classes refine written and verbal communication and strengthen reasoning and analysis. In the second and third years, students have more opportunities to personalize their education through electives and pursue specific areas of interest through academic programs, exploring frontier fields of law and their emerging challenges, such as the legal implications of artificial intelligence, mental health law, or climate change and environmental law.

LL.M. Programs

Vanderbilt Law School provides a variety of academic offerings that allow LLM students to focus on a particular area of interest in an array of fields, including corporate and business law, constitutional law, litigation and dispute resolution, criminal law, negotiation, international law, intellectual property, law and human behavior, environmental law, and law and economics.

During the fall semester, all LLM students take Introduction to Legal Research and Writing in the United States. This course, specifically tailored to meet the needs of foreign attorneys and scholars, provides a distinct academic forum in which LLM students learn how to conduct legal research in the United States; the fundamental, generally accepted conventions of written legal analysis and citation in the United States; and the basic vocabulary of legal analysis and advocacy in the United States. Course Track: Students focus exclusively on coursework, choosing their courses from the law school’s extensive curriculum.
Thesis Track: Students complete a substantial research project that culminates in a scholarly paper, working closely with a faculty advisor with expertise in their areas of study. Only students with strong English language and writing skills who are capable of extended independent research should choose the Thesis Track option.
Law and Business Track: This track offers full-time, intensive academic and professional training in corporate law, securities regulation, finance, accounting, and the principles of corporate governance. Graduates generally use their training in their home countries to pursue careers in business law, as government regulators, or in other international posts that benefit from an excellent understanding of business law and corporate management.

Vanderbilt LLM students benefit from an optional intensive summer Legal English program designed to provide the language and academic skills needed to succeed in a demanding educational program at a top US law school. Provided in association with the Vanderbilt University English Language Center, the program includes intensive instruction in oral and written communication, small group discussions, and practice responding quickly and concisely in large group discussions.

Other Programs and Initiatives

Vanderbilt Law's upper-level concentration programs allow students to concentrate their studies in several fields. In addition to Law & Business and the Branstetter Litigation & Dispute Resolution Programs, the school also offers programs in Criminal Justice; Energy, Environment & Land Use, Social Justice (the George Barrett Social Justice Program); Intellectual Property; International Legal Studies; Law & Government; and Law & Innovation.
