Internship Details
- Duration: The position begins remotely for 10 hours per week for the first two weeks. In-person work begins in early June and concludes in early August. The Education & Engagement Internship extends an additional week.
- Work Hours: The internship requires long hours, including weekends and evenings.
- Compensation: Interns receive a paid stipend, and shared housing is provided.
- Requirements: Interns must bring their own laptop and have access to a vehicle. They are responsible for their travel to and from Vail.
Betty Ford Alpine Gardens Internship Programs
Beyond the Bravo! Vail Music Festival, the Vail area also offers internship opportunities at the Betty Ford Alpine Gardens. These internships focus on horticulture, conservation, and education within an alpine environment.
Conservation Internship
The Conservation Internship at Betty Ford Alpine Gardens offers a unique opportunity to assist with the conservation of the fragile alpine environment. The Gardens is spearheading the implementation of the North American Botanic Garden Strategy for Alpine Plant Conservation to understand and protect this special habitat. The work includes extensive time in the alpine areas of Colorado collecting and documenting alpine plants, and managing data and collections on-site at the Gardens. Occasionally, the team will travel overnight and/or camp, including in the backcountry.
Public Horticulture Internships
Betty Ford Alpine Gardens is an internationally acclaimed botanic garden known for its alpine horticulture, education and conservation. Located in the small resort town of Vail, Colorado which attracts a global audience for its skiing and outdoor recreation, Betty Ford Alpine Gardens is the highest elevation botanical garden in North America situated at 8,200’ (2,700 m) in the central Rocky Mountains. The 4.6 acre cultivated gardens attracts more than 200,000 visitors annually to see its unique collection of alpine and mountain plants collected from around the world.

The Betty Ford Alpine Gardens offers two distinct Public Horticulture Internships:
- Public Horticulture Intern: This internship immerses individuals in ornamental gardening, general maintenance, propagation/production, conservation duties, and plant curation.
- Public Horticulture Curatorial Intern: This internship focuses on plant records, including bed inventorying, BG BASE data management, plant ID and photography, and record keeping, in addition to general horticulture tasks.
Both internships provide opportunities to interact with guests, staff, and board members, and require some educational and/or practical experience in horticulture, botany, and/or landscape design/maintenance.
Summer Informal Education Internship
The Summer Informal Education Internship at Betty Ford Alpine Gardens provides experience in environmental education. Throughout the season, the intern will be supported in gaining valuable experience in environmental education, enhancing their communication skills, contributing to the botanic garden’s mission, and developing a clearer understanding of their career goals. The intern will create and implement interactive and engaging environmental education programs for visitors of various ages.

Valley Associates for Independent Living (VAIL)
Valley Associates for Independent Living is a non-profit organization in Harrisonburg, VA that helps people with disabilities live independently. Their mission is to promote selfdirection among people with disabilities and remove barriers to independence in society. VAIL provides independent living skills training within the seven main areas of need including information and referral, peer support, housing, equipment, aids, and transportation, personal assistance, accessible transport, and accessible environment. Staff will work directly with consumers to help them define their goals and create a plan to meet them. They visit with consumers once at least every three months to gather any updates and see how progress towards goals are going.
