Navigating Health and Wellness at UVA: A Comprehensive Guide to Student Services
The University of Virginia (UVA) is committed to supporting the health and well-being of its students through a diverse range of services and dedicated professionals at the Department of Student Health and Wellness (SHW). This article provides a comprehensive overview of the resources available to UVA students, including medical, mental health, and emergency support, both during and after regular business hours.
Accessing Emergency and Urgent Care
In an emergency or life-threatening situation, students should immediately call 911. UVA provides several options for urgent medical and mental health concerns when Student Health and Wellness is closed.
Urgent Mental Health Support
Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) offers providers available at (434) 243-5150 for students needing to speak with someone regarding an urgent mental health concern when Student Health and Wellness is closed.
Students can also access TimelyCare's "TalkNow" service to speak to a mental health professional in minutes, anytime.
Urgent Medical Support
Care providers are always on call at (434) 297-4261 when Student Health and Wellness is closed for students needing to speak with someone regarding an urgent medical concern.

It's important to note that after-hours services cannot cancel or schedule appointments or discuss details of pre-entrance health forms, insurance, or other administrative questions.
Urgent Safety or Well-being Matters
If a student needs to speak to someone about an urgent safety or well-being matter after hours, but does not have a medical or mental health concern, they should still call 911 in an emergency or life-threatening situation.
Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS)
All UVA students are eligible for emergency, walk-in crisis counseling at Counseling & Psychological Services during regular business hours. Students can find more information about walk-in visits to CAPS.
Support for Sexual Assault Survivors
SHW provides medical and emotional assistance to students who have experienced a sexual assault. A PDF of resources available to students who have experienced a sexual assault is available.

The Department of Student Health and Wellness (SHW): A Holistic Approach
The Department of Student Health and Wellness is composed of a diverse team of professionals working collaboratively to support the health and well-being of UVA students. SHW also collaborates extensively across Grounds and with UVA Health colleagues on care delivery, initiatives, interventions, and the development of guidelines and protocols related to both physical health and mental well-being.
Media Inquiries and Patient Confidentiality
While SHW makes every effort to respond to media inquiries in a timely manner, direct service and care to students remains its top priority. During particularly busy periods of the academic year, or when an inquiry involves topics SHW has recently addressed, it may need to prioritize accordingly.
To protect patient confidentiality, Student Health and Wellness does not permit video recording, photography, or other media activity inside its facilities without prior approval from the Associate Director of Marketing and Communications.

The Student Health and Wellness building features various student spaces (including reflection rooms, a student lounge, and a student living room) meant to promote and empower student well-being.
Business Hours
SHW follows the UVA holiday calendar and closes on appropriate holidays.
Parking
The SHW parking garage is underground on Monroe Lane, which runs parallel to Brandon Ave. You can turn onto Monroe Lane from Jefferson Park Avenue. Please do NOT park in the Monroe apartments' parking garage, as this parking garage is reserved for Monroe residents only and towing is strictly enforced.
P1 parking is for students with appointments only. P2 parking is for staff/faculty with B3 permits only. Once you park in P1, you will need to register your car via your license plate number. There are signs within the office of your appointment to register your car.
Taking the Bus
The University Transit Service (UTS) is a fare-free transit service committed to providing safe, reliable, efficient, and friendly transit service to University of Virginia students, faculty, and staff. UTS buses regularly drive by Brandon Ave, the closest SHW bus stop. Students can take the blue line, orange line, silver line or redline bus.
Reservable Spaces
While most of the SHW public areas are available for drop-in, the Department of Student Health and Wellness (SHW) is pleased to offer some reservable spaces for events and programming that are in alignment with SHW's vision of enhancing the well-being and health of the university community.
