UTD Freshman Dorms: A Comprehensive Guide to On-Campus Living

Choosing where to live is a big decision for incoming freshman at The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD). On-campus housing offers a convenient and engaging residential experience. This guide provides essential information about UTD's freshman dorm options, move-in tips, and what to expect.

On-Campus Housing Options for Freshmen

UTD offers several on-campus housing options, each with its unique features and amenities. While students may not have extensive choices for freshman year housing, understanding the available options is beneficial.

  • University Commons (Residence Halls 1-4): These residence halls consist of apartment-style living with modern amenities and a social atmosphere. University Commons offers a range of accommodations, including private bedrooms with shared bathrooms, shared kitchens, and common living spaces. They are fully furnished with a Twin XL bed & mattress, desk, desk chair, dresser, and nightstand. A couch is provided in the common area.

  • Canyon Creek Heights North and South: These newer apartment-style accommodations provide private bedrooms, semi-private bathrooms, and shared common spaces, including living rooms and kitchens. Canyon Creek Heights is suitable for both undergraduate and graduate students. Canyon Creek Heights North apartments are furnished with a Twin XL bed & mattress. Canyon Creek Heights South apartments are furnished with a full-sized bed and mattress. Each bedroom also includes a desk, desk chair, dresser, and nightstand. A couch, coffee table, and barstools are provided in the living area.

  • University Village: These apartments differ from University Commons in that they are designed for more independent living with full kitchens and private bathrooms for each resident. University Village is generally preferred by upperclassmen and graduate students. University Village apartments are unfurnished. All appliances are included (Full-sized refrigerator, freezer, microwave, stove top, oven, and dishwasher.) Laundry machines are provided in select units.

Cost of On-Campus Housing

The cost of housing at UTD can vary depending on the chosen residence hall and meal plan. As of the 2022-2023 academic year, the estimated cost for housing and a meal plan combined ranges from approximately $6,000 to $12,000 per year.

Factors to Consider When Choosing Housing

When considering which housing option is best for you, consider factors such as your budget, personal preferences for privacy and amenities, and the level of independence you desire. Each housing option has its own unique features, but all of them offer a supportive and engaging residential community. It's also a good idea to take a campus tour if possible, and talk to current students about their housing experiences to get a better feel for what may be the right fit for you.

Move-In Day: What to Expect

Move-in day can be a busy but exciting time. Here's what you need to know to ensure a smooth move-in process:

  • Arrival Time: University Commons residents will be able to select their preferred move-in date and time. Canyon Creek Heights and University Village residents will have received a pre-assigned move-in date and time. Make sure to arrive at the Activity Center at your assigned time. Arriving at your scheduled time helps prevent long lines and ensures our move-in operations run smoothly. Residents who arrive over 20 minutes late for their move-in time may need to wait until the end of the day.
  • Check-In: Jump in the line for your building to check-in and receive your keys. You also need it to move in! So don’t pack it away in a box. Your Comet Card is your key to your building and your suite. Receive your keys, route cards, campus map, and other helpful information. Place the route cards on the dash of your vehicles. After picking up your keys at the Activity Center, follow the signs to the move-in holding zone and get in the line for your building.
  • Unloading: Pull up to your building’s unloading zone and unload your vehicle. Two vehicles are allowed per resident, and repeat trips through the unloading zone are not allowed. Due to tight spaces, U-Hauls and trailers are not allowed through the unloading zone and must unload from Parking Lot T. At least one person must stay with the car to move it after unloading. After unloading your cart, place it in the hallway so our staff can pick it up and take it back to the unloading zone for other students to use.
  • What to Bring (and What to Leave Behind):
    • Our first-year residence halls (University Commons) are already fully furnished, so no additional furniture is needed. University Village: Unfurnished. Residents must provide all furniture. All appliances are included (Full-sized refrigerator, freezer, microwave, stove top, oven, and dishwasher.) Laundry machines are provided in select units. Canyon Creek Heights: Fully furnished with a Twin XL bed & mattress (CCHN) or a full-sized bed and mattress (CCHS). Each bedroom also includes a desk, desk chair, dresser, and nightstand. A couch, coffee table, and barstools are provided in the living area. We always suggest waiting until you move in and see your space before buying big items and decorations.
    • Speaking of shopping, you’re probably going to need less than you think. Target and Walmart are both within a 5-minute drive from campus.
    • Does your roommate have a mini fridge that they’d like to bring? Do you want to bring a table for the living area? University Commons residents may bring one microwave and mini fridge into their suite. However, only one of each appliance is allowed, and it must remain in the common living area. Microwaves or mini fridges are not allowed in residents’ individual bedrooms. Residents may bring their own appliances, or they may rent them from Mustang Rentals.
    • Make sure to label your items in case anything gets lost.
  • Important Reminders:
    • Please note that items may not be shipped to your on-campus address before you move in. Additionally, University Housing does not accept furniture shipments due to available storage space.
    • Sorry, but early move-ins are not allowed, as our maintenance and housekeeping teams are busy preparing your room for your arrival. Residents who plan to arrive in Dallas before their assigned move-in date may wish to look at area hotels, many of which have special rates for UT Dallas students.
    • While we cannot predict the weather with absolute certainty, we do know that it will be HOT in August! Wear loose and light clothing, drink plenty of water, and bring sunscreen. Dallas gets HOT in August! Drink plenty of water, and wear loose, light clothing and sunscreen. Stay in the shade or indoors as much as possible.
    • Keep in mind that you do not have to finish your move right away! Once you have your keys you can take as much time as you need to move items in and get set up. Target and Walmart are within a 5-minute drive from campus if you need to get more supplies.

Roommate Information

Living with a roommate is a common experience in college. Here's what you need to know about UTD's roommate policies:

  • Roommate Matching: When applying for Housing, residents fill out a lifestyle questionnaire that helps the Housing office pair roommates together. We do our best to assign roommates based on their answers to the questionnaire.
  • Roommate Requests: Roommate requests are not guaranteed. However, we will do our best to match requested roommates together.
  • Communication: Touch base with them before you arrive to get to know each other and discuss who will bring what.
  • Roommate Agreements: During the first week of the school year, roommates will meet together with their Peer Advisor (PA) to fill out a Roommate Agreement Form. If conflict arises later in the school year, the residents may refer back to their signed Roommate Agreement Form. Their PA may get involved to help mediate the conflict.
  • Conflict Resolution: What if my roommates and I do not get along? However, we understand that roommate conflicts may arise.

Decorating Your Space

Now it’s time to decorate! Have fun and make the space your own, but remember to follow the decorating rules in the Resident Handbook (see “Decorating/Painting/Wall Hangings” section, pgs. The use of thumbtacks, small tack nails, or small screws is permissible for hanging items on walls (i.e. posters or pictures). Nailing or screwing anything into doors or furniture is prohibited. Affixing any items to the ceiling is prohibited.

Off-Campus Alternatives

While living on campus offers numerous benefits, some students may prefer off-campus housing. Here are a few nearby options:

  • Northside: The closest you can get to living on campus without actually doing so is renting at Northside. These off-campus apartments are directly across the street from UTD’s Natural Science and Engineering Research Laboratory and feature luxury units with both furnished and unfurnished options. While the rent is higher than on-campus alternatives, the floor plans are more spacious. You can also grab a bite to eat at the restaurants within the complex, including Delish Bubble Tea, Chopped Halal Grill and Northside Drafthouse and Eatery. Northside offers floor plans from studios to four-bedroom apartments. Brand new units are now available in Northside 2, the latest addition to the complex. Each unit has its own kitchen, washer and dryer.
  • McCallum Meadows: McCallum Meadows is about 10 minutes from campus, making it perfect for students who want an affordable apartment without a long commute. All available units are less than $1000 a month, and select apartments include washers and dryers while all apartments come with high speed internet. UTD students tend to live in nearby off-campus apartments and this is no different, so don’t worry about being isolated from campus.
