Understanding the UTA Semester Schedule and Academic Calendar
Navigating the academic landscape of a university can be complex. This article aims to clarify the UTA semester schedule and academic calendar, providing a comprehensive guide to understanding course formats and important deadlines. This page serves as a resource to help you get the most out of your education, from course descriptions, class schedules, syllabi, and more.
Decoding UTA Course Formats
UTA offers a variety of course formats to cater to different learning styles and student needs. Each format has its own structure and requirements, which are crucial to understand for effective planning.
On-Campus Classes
An On-Campus class is scheduled on specific days and times. For example, a class might be scheduled on Mondays/Wednesdays/Fridays from 9:00 to 9:50 am. These courses involve traditional in-person instruction in a classroom setting.
Synchronous Online Classes
Similar to on-campus classes in terms of scheduling, a Synchronous Online class is scheduled on specific days and times. For example, a class might be scheduled on Mondays/Wednesdays/Fridays from 9:00 to 9:50 am. The key difference is that instruction takes place online in real-time, requiring students to log in and participate live during all or some of the class days and times throughout the semester.
Asynchronous Online Classes
In contrast to synchronous online classes, an Asynchronous Online class is all online and divided into weekly instructional modules. All course instruction, materials, exams, and projects are delivered online and asynchronously. Students may then work through modules each week on their own schedule, with dates and times for module completion, assignment due dates, and online quizzes/exams clearly indicated in the syllabus and posted in the introduction to each week’s course module.

Hybrid Classes: Blending On-Campus and Online Learning
UTA also offers hybrid courses that combine on-campus and online learning experiences.
Campus Exams & Synchronous Online Instruction
This format primarily involves synchronous online instruction but includes mandatory on-campus sessions for exams. For example, a Campus Exams & Synchronous Online Instruction class might be scheduled on Mondays/Wednesdays/Fridays from 9:00 to 9:50 am. Students will be required to log in and participate live during all or some of the class days and times throughout the semester. Students may be required to attend up to four exams scheduled on campus on Mondays throughout the semester (dates and times specified in MyMav and on syllabus). At least one and up to four one-hour (or equivalent) on-campus class sessions/exams on specified days/times noted in MyMav and on syllabus.
Campus Exams & Asynchronous Online Instruction
Similar to the previous format, this option combines asynchronous online learning with on-campus exams. For example, a Campus Exams & Asynchronous Online Instruction class might be scheduled on Mondays/Wednesdays/Fridays from 9:00 to 9:50 am. Students may be required to attend up to four exams scheduled on campus on Mondays throughout the semester (dates and times specified in MyMav and on syllabus). Students may then work through modules each week on their own schedule, with dates and times for module completion, assignment due dates, and online quizzes/exams clearly indicated in the syllabus and posted in the introduction to each week’s course module. At least one and up to four one-hour (or equivalent) on-campus class sessions/exams on specified days/times noted in MyMav and on syllabus.
5+ Campus Sessions & Synchronous Online Instruction
This format involves a significant on-campus component combined with synchronous online instruction. For example, a 5+ Campus Sessions & Synchronous Online Instruction class might be scheduled on Mondays/Wednesdays/Fridays from 9:00 to 9:50 am. Students may be required to attend class sessions on campus every Friday, and online Mondays and Wednesdays during the designated class time.
5+ Campus Sessions & Asynchronous Online Instruction
This format combines a significant on-campus component with asynchronous online instruction. For example, a 5+ Campus Sessions & Asynchronous Online Instruction class is scheduled on Mondays/Wednesdays/Fridays from 9:00 to 9:50 am. Students may be required to attend class sessions on campus every Monday then work through modules each week on their own schedule, with dates and times for module completion, assignment due dates, and online quizzes/exams clearly indicated in the syllabus and posted in the introduction to each week’s course module.
