The disappearance of Trenton Massey, a 21-year-old student at Northern Michigan University (NMU), has gripped the community, sparking widespread concern and a determined search effort. The events that unfolded early Sunday morning have left family, friends, and the wider community anxiously awaiting news of his whereabouts.
Disappearance and Initial Search Efforts
Trenton Massey was last seen early Sunday morning. The Marquette Police Department's official search was suspended. Prior to the suspension of the official search, the Marquette Police Department reported that Massey was last seen on camera walking onto the ice of Lake Superior. Before that his cell phone was turned in to police. It had been found on a multi-use path in the city of Marquette. A family member of Massey's was contacted, and they said they would notify Massey his phone had been found. Sunday, traveling eastbound on the path where his phone was discovered. He then disappeared from the view of the camera.

Community Vigil and Outpouring of Support
In a display of solidarity and hope, over a hundred people gathered at Corunna High School on Thursday night to show support for Trenton Massey. The vigil, organized by Michelle Holmes and Amy Garrett, aimed to bring the community together and demonstrate their unwavering support for the Massey family.
McKenna Sites, a 2022 graduate of Corunna High School with Massey, reflected on his positive impact on those around him: “Whenever I knew that I was going to meet with him and see him, it always put a big smile on my face, even to just walk up to him in the class that I knew he was going to be in."

Holmes and Garrett, who watched Massey grow up in the community, emphasized the importance of bringing him home: “He needs to be back here. His mom needs to see that, his dad needs to see that, his sister needs it. This community needs it."
The support extended beyond the local community, with an online fundraiser garnering over $42,000 to support Massey's family. The fundraiser highlighted the anguish and uncertainty faced by the family: "Sarah Brock and her family are facing every parent's worst nightmare: her son, Trenton Massey, is missing in Marquette, Michigan. The days since his disappearance have been filled with uncertainty, fear, and an overwhelming sense of helplessness."
Mother's Plea and Unanswered Questions
Massey's mother, Sarah Brock, has been a vocal advocate for her son, pledging to continue the search until he is found. She has also raised several questions surrounding the circumstances of his disappearance.
Brock questioned whether the "frigid blizzardy night" contributed to her son's disappearance.
"What if he wouldn't have been alone and made sure to stay with a buddy?" Brock's post continued. "Was his disorientation because of the hypothermia setting in or was he already disoriented? What's if, what if, what if?"

Brock compiled a timeline of her son's possible last locations and expressed frustration over "unanswered questions," including why he missed a turn while apparently walking back to his residence on McMillan Street in Marquette.
"My biggest one right now … and I scream it up to the heavens … is WHY TRENTON?" Brock's post continued. "It is beyond evident from the hundreds of stories and kind words from all those that knew him back home and here at NMU, that he was one of a kind, an amazing guy, would give the shirt off his back, kind, selfless, likeable, loveable, respectful, an amazing soul, one to go above and beyond and be above and beyond, he had done no one any wrong."
Student Perspectives and Search Efforts
NMU students have also been actively involved in the search efforts. NMU student Ryder Amesbury told the local station he met Massey at the bar the night of his disappearance.
“It’s scary,” Amesbury said. “It was an absolute blizzard that night. Like, I walked home, and I got lost walking home. So, it’s horrible to hear and obviously see, but it’s amazing to see how many people came out here to help search for him.”
Another volunteer, Mauria Smith, who was visiting from Indianapolis, said she spotted search crews from her hotel room window and decided to help.

“I’m a mother, and I can’t imagine if my child was missing,” she told WLUC-TV.
Brock, who shared a photo on Tuesday sent by her son hours before he disappeared, said the outpouring of support included some volunteers who drove seven hours or more to participate in searches for Massey.
"He would give the same effort for someone else," the distraught mother wrote. "It shouldn't have been him that we are searching for. We are continuing search efforts today and allowing some space for search and rescue to do their searching down by the ice and water. We are unsure because of the changing conditions of the lake and the weather, how long it will take to find him. But we will. Sunday onward and to check their properties, including vehicles and outbuildings, for any signs of him.
Search Suspension and Continued Hope
Despite the extensive search efforts, the Marquette Police Department suspended its official search for Massey. According to the Marquette Police Department, Massey was last seen on camera walking onto the ice of Lake Superior early Sunday morning. The department said volunteer search efforts may continue, but the official search will remain suspended unless new information emerges.
Sites says she’ll be holding out hope that Massey will come home. “I won’t give up,” she said.
