UNT Freshman Orientation: A Comprehensive Guide
Embarking on your college experience at the University of North Texas (UNT) is an exciting step. Freshman Orientation is designed to help you navigate this transition, providing you with essential information and resources to succeed. This guide will walk you through what to expect during orientation, how to register, what to bring, and other important details to ensure a smooth start to your academic journey.
What to Expect at Orientation
UNT's Freshman Orientation is structured to give you a comprehensive introduction to university life. During orientation, you will:

Orientation Registration
How to Register
To register for an orientation session:
- Log in to the MyUNT portal at my.unt.edu using your EUID and password.
- Click on the "Advising & Orientation" tab.
- Select "Register for Orientation."
Register early, as sessions fill up quickly. The most up-to-date list of available orientation sessions can be found on your MyUNT student portal; only sessions with open spaces will be displayed. Registration for Spring 2026 and Summer/Fall 2026 orientations is now live!
Orientation Fees and Payment
Payment for the orientation session can be made online through your MyUNT portal or in person at the Orientation and Transition Programs office (Union 377). Note that orientation fees are non-refundable. However, financial constraints will not prevent you from attending orientation; you have until the beginning of classes to pay the fee.

Changing or Canceling Your Session
If you need to change your orientation date, you can do so through the MyUNT portal. To receive a full refund, you must cancel prior to your scheduled orientation date.
Orientation Sessions: Overnight and Day Programs
Freshman Orientation sessions 1-11 are overnight sessions, providing on-campus accommodations in a residence hall. Overnight housing is not provided during Freshman Orientation sessions 12 or 13. Students attending sessions 12 and 13 may move into their fall residence hall on the first day of orientation.
Important Dates and Deadlines
- The Freshman Orientation schedule at a glance will be posted by March 1, 2026.
- Information for sessions 12 and 13 will be available by July 15.
Pre-Orientation Requirements
Pre-Orientation Homework in Canvas
To ensure you have the best orientation experience possible, there may be pre-orientation homework assigned in Canvas. Be sure to check Canvas regularly for any assignments or modules that need to be completed prior to your orientation date.
Confirming Your Major
Prior to or during orientation, you will need to complete a form confirming your major. This helps academic advisors prepare relevant information and guidance for your advising session.
Housing Information
On-Campus Living Requirement
All new freshmen are required to live on campus during their first year at UNT. If you have extenuating circumstances, you can fill out an orientation housing exemption form for review by the university staff.

Roommate Requests
Roommate requests are not accepted for Freshman Orientation.
What to Bring
We encourage students to view the Freshman Orientation packing list before arriving to campus for orientation. If you are attending sessions 1-11, remember to bring items for your overnight stay on-campus.
Parent & Family Orientation
Spring 2026 Parent & Family Orientations are now available for registration! Registration for the 2026 Parent Orientation will open in January 2026.
Purpose and Benefits
The Parent & Family Orientation program is an optional but highly encouraged program designed to support families as their students transition to college life. It provides an overview of UNT's academic programs, resources, and support services available to students.
Program Structure
While students and their families will have separate itineraries, you will be together several times throughout the experience. Parent & Family Orientation includes information sessions and opportunities to interact with university staff and faculty.

Registration
Registering your student for orientation does not automatically register you for the Parent & Family Orientation. Parent and family participation is strongly encouraged to enhance the overall orientation experience.
Additional Information
Official Communication
Be sure to monitor official communication from the university leading up to your orientation date. This will include important updates, reminders, and instructions.
Mathematics Placement Test
Students have an opportunity to improve their placement level by taking the Mathematics Placement Test.
Foreign Language Requirement
Some academic programs require some level of proficiency in a foreign language. Check the UNT catalog at catalog.unt.edu to see if a foreign language is required for your chosen major. The foreign language exam may be taken only once per language. Students who took the Foreign Language Placement Exam (FLPE) may be eligible to receive foreign language credit. Should check the appropriate boxes on their orientation registration materials if Student will be age of 18 at the start of the orientation.
First Flight Week
First Flight Week is UNT's required welcome week program. All new students are expected to participate in First Flight Week prior to the start of the fall semester, including commuter students. Registration for First Flight is separate from orientation registration.
