UNL Education Abroad Programs: A World of Opportunities

Studying abroad offers a transformative experience, providing students with unique opportunities for personal and academic growth. UNL (University of Nebraska-Lincoln) Education Abroad programs are designed to immerse students in diverse cultures, enhance their understanding of global issues, and broaden their horizons. These programs range from semester-long exchanges to faculty-led trips, catering to a variety of academic interests and schedules.

Semester and Academic Year Exchange Programs

For students seeking a fully immersive experience, UNL offers semester or academic year exchange programs. These programs allow students to study as fully-integrated students at a host institution, taking courses from the university course catalog alongside local and other international students. This provides a unique opportunity to challenge oneself and distinguish oneself academically.

Cost-Effective Options

Exchange programs are often a cost-effective option, as students typically pay tuition and fees for 15 credit hours at the Nebraska resident tuition rate based on their UNL college. This can significantly reduce the financial burden of studying abroad.

International Student Exchange Program (ISEP)

The ISEP network provides exchange opportunities in 50 countries. Through ISEP, students can choose from a wide range of host institutions and countries. However, space through ISEP-Exchange is competitive, so students may not get their first choice. As an alternative, students can consider the less competitive ISEP-Direct option, which allows them to pay a set fee to ISEP to cover the cost of attendance at a host institution. It's important to note that Via-TRM and ISEP application deadlines are usually much earlier than other programs.

Faculty-Led Programs: Immersive and Focused

UNL also offers a variety of faculty-led programs, which are shorter, more focused study abroad experiences led by UNL faculty members. These programs often focus on specific academic themes or regions, providing students with a deeper understanding of the subject matter.

The Value of Studying Abroad

Studying abroad provides valuable opportunities for personal and academic growth. As one student shared, "It gave me the opportunity to truly push myself outside of my comfort zone and learn to adjust to different environments." UNL is committed to bringing global perspectives to its students in and out of the classroom. Students have journeyed around the world in diverse and eye-opening locations, including Bulgaria, China, Costa Rica, England (at Oxford University), India, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Kenya, Latvia, Romania, Spain, Ukraine, and Vietnam-and some have participated in the "Semester at Sea" program.

Students can take courses on foreign governments and politics, especially of the host country, or courses on international relations that count toward their political science major. Many students spend at least one semester abroad and/or participate in faculty-led study abroad programs. These experiences take them all over the globe, from Mexico to Morocco, from China to Chile, and well beyond. Students gain language skills, cultural competencies, new friends, and broadened horizons. While engaging with human rights coursework and internships abroad, students come to recognize the overarching meaning of human rights: lives full of purpose and dignity.
