Introduction

The way we consume media has changed significantly. We have moved away from traditional ways of watching movies and TV shows to more flexible and personalized options. With the rise of digital media, we've built up huge collections of movies, TV shows, music, and photos that we want to easily access and enjoy. Media servers act as a central place to store, organize, and stream media content to different devices in our home network. They offer an easy and convenient way to access our digital libraries from anywhere and on any device. Universal Media Server (UMS) is a popular media server solution that has become well-known among media enthusiasts. What is Universal Media Server?

Universal Media Server (UMS) is a DLNA-compliant UPnP media server based on the PS3 Media Server. It enables you to stream just about any type of audio or video file to any DNLA-compatible devices. Written in Java, it streams or transcodes many different media formats with minimum configuration from many platforms. The program makes use of FFmpeg, MEncoder, tsMuxeR, MediaInfo, OpenSubtitles and other tools which offers a great support for most popular media formats. This project was started by SubJunk, an official PMS developer that aims to create one of the best media server product.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Universal Media Server (UMS) provides a powerful media streaming experience, but occasionally, you may encounter issues that can disrupt your streaming sessions. In this section, we will explore common problems that users may face and provide troubleshooting solutions.

Playback Problems

If you experience issues with media playback, consider the following steps:

  • Verify that your network has sufficient bandwidth to support streaming.
  • Check for any firewall or antivirus software that may be blocking UMS.
  • Make sure that the media files you are trying to play are supported by UMS.
  • If you encounter transcoding errors, check your UMS transcoding settings.

Connection Problems

If you're having trouble connecting to UMS, try these solutions:

  • Connect your system to your network using a wired Ethernet connection instead of relying on Wi-Fi.
  • Enable transcoding hardware acceleration if your system supports it.

Universal Media Server and ZimaBoard

To complement the power of Universal Media Server, ZimaBoard offers an ideal hardware solution. ZimaBoard Single Board Computer provides the necessary hardware capabilities for a robust media server setup. ZimaBoard boasts impressive hardware specifications, including an Intel Celeron N3450 processor, ample 8GB RAM, and various connectivity options. Furthermore, ZimaBoard offers 32GB storage options, allowing you to store large media libraries with ease. The combination of Universal Media Server and ZimaBoard provides a powerful and flexible solution for creating your own media server.

Advantages and Disadvantages

Like any software, UMS has its pros and cons:

Pros:

  • It will automatically scan all of your content on your home network.
  • Third-party plug-ins will provide additional features.
  • The Universal Media Server is open source, and will always be free to use and clean.
  • Ready to launch and play.
  • No codec packs to install.
  • No folder configuration and pre-parsing or this kind of annoying thing.OGG / FLAC / MPC / APE / AAC / M4A / ATRAC / MP3 / AC3 / DTS / DTS-HD / WAV / AIFF / DSD

Cons:

  • The web interface is uninteresting to look at and needs the user to help out with organization.
  • Universal Media Server fails to work on a few of the theoretically compatible devices.
  • There aren't any remote access options.
  • The database size it creates for a modest media library it rather large, and takes forever to scan. I disabled and forego the media library to avoid this.
  • I had to disable transcoding of mp4 and others, because it was transcoding most files even though my WDTVLive device supports them directly just fine. And it doesn't mention that the server has to be restarted to recognize this change.
